  • Hi, this 'How To' video shows in depth how to connect up a cat6 network faceplate socket using the T568B wiring standard and how to wire up a CAT6 RJ45 plug using solid core cable. You CANNOT use STRANDED core cable in faceplate sockets, you have to use SOLID core cable.
    Hope you enjoy the video.
    Many thanks Vince

    Thanks for these videos. They have been a massive help.
    I just installed my first network face plate today, next to my bed for the laptop, and the other side is terminated with a plug into a switch next to the server.
    Now I want to do the whole house!

    This is a great video, Vince - thanks so much for creating it. I ran Cat 6 cable throughout our house when we renovated it, so we've had the loose wire hanging out of the walls for 6 years now. I was actually about to hire someone to come and connect the cables to the faceplate sockets and end plugs, but I reckon I can do this myself after watching your video. I have just ordered the necessary items from your eBay shop :)

      Thanks Ged, hopefully you will manage it fine. Once you practise a dozen times you will get the hang of it. Remember to only commit to crimping the plug once you are completely happy that the colour code is correct and the wires are all pushed up to the very end of the plugs. I will pack up these items now for you. Cheers for the order.

    Watched several of your videos and I find them very informative. I'm in the process of extending my house and am trying to put in a Cat 6 network. I've bought some Kenable 23 AWG solid Cat 6 cable which I'm running from numerous locations around the house back to a central location. Once all the cables are in I'm looking to test them before plaster boarding etc I'm looking to have 2 cables coming from a central location to each room and like the idea of putting twin face plates on both cables in the room & at the central location. As I understand it I can then use patch leads from my router to connect 1 end and patch leads the other end to devices. So I have a couple of what are probably really basic questions 1) Do all patch leads need to be CAT 6. 2) If I use the face plates when testing the system out and then want to move them can I disconnect them and re-use them or are they a one time only item.

    Hi Vince, if only I'd since this before buying flat Cat6a stranded core cable for installation in my extension - aiming to wire up to wall faceplate sockets! Given the cable's now hidden behind painted skirting boards, could you suggest how I can adapt the cable ends (introduce solid core adaptors) to utilise my expensive, brushed steel faceplates?

    Purchased kit to wire a few cables but nothing else but now looking to replace some sockets our electrician has just put in as he's used some base ones limiting our fibre to 100Mpbs.

    • @Mymatevince

      +Ant Smith Hi Ant, I am not sure if I have read the question correctly, but the Ethernet cable goes from the Sky router (the spare ports at the back of the router) to the backroom upstairs. You can terminate the Ethernet cable either onto wall sockets and use short patch leads or just run a very long Ethernet patch cable. If you want to run a new cable from your VDSL faceplate/ wall socket to the sky router then this will need to be either RJ11 to RJ11 lead or a RJ45 to RJ11 lead.Hope that is what you were asking.Thanks Vince

    Hey mate, I have a Ethernet cable running from my router, through the wall to my room and I’ve cut the plug off in my room for a wall socket. And I’ve tried running a dual wall socket with the one line going through both sockets. But if I plug my pc and Xbox in at the same time neither work. But if I just have one plugged in it works. Can you just not do it or is there a fix?

    • @MrGtagangster
      @MrGtagangster 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have one line going through two devices (I believe signalling it as 1 device), which means neither gets it's own IP address. The router thinks its 1 connection, not two seperate ones.

    Hi Vince
    I've just attempted a trial connection of a Schneider RJ45 data socket on one end of a solid core cable and a two-part RJ45 CAT6 plug on the other end (using proper pucnh-down tool and crimpers).
    This was all connected to my el-cheapo network cable tester and nada, nothing, nowt! :(
    Not one LED lit up.
    Now, I notice in your video, that you say CAT6 plugs need to be used with CAT6 cable, but are CAT6 plugs backwards compatible with CAT5E solid-core cable?
    I only ask as I bought what I thought was Excel CAT6 solid-core cable, only to realise it was actually CAT5E on arrival (depite searching for CAT6).:(
    I know the tester works fine, so the problem either lies with cable/plug category compatibility, bad termination at faceplate or plug or incorrect plugs (suitable for stranded cable only?).
    Any ideas?
    UPDATE
    After watching your video again, I learned that not all data sockets are equal. I originally thought the Schneider data sockets I installed were universal (CAT5E/CAT6).
    However, on checking, I discovered that they are in fact CAT5E (you learn something every day).
    Fortunately, the 'Schneider Ultimate' faceplates have a replaceable module, which I believe is referred to as a 'Keystone Jack'.
    Anyhow, CAT6 versions of these are available for between £1.30 - £6.00 (Amazon) and it looks like they are a standard fitment so any module should fit my existing faceplate.
    In case your wondering why I don't just obtain a new CAT6 faceplate, well all the sockets, switches etc in my house are from the "Schneider Ultimate" flat range and I like to keep everything the same (OCD alert).
    Another great video btw

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Hi, sorry I have been away.....Did you get it sorted out? Although Cat6 and Cat5e plugs/sockets are slightly different, it should still work. Maybe it didn't crimp properly.

      My Mate VINCE Hope you had a great time. Glad to be back? LOL
      Well, I had a total rethink and ordered Excel CAT6 solid core cable. In fact, I'm waiting for a second 20m roll to arrive after deciding to run CAT6 to another two rooms. What I did find that your viewers might find useful is that you can get Lindy CAT6 keystone jacks for £2.99 (on Lindy UK website) to replace the CAT5e jacks in compatible data faceplates.
      I actually made the mistake of thinking I needed to upgrade my GET/Schneider Ultimate faceplate to Euro faceplate + CAT6 & BT Slave (to replace existing grid modules) at a cost of £27 (inc shipping). Stoopidly, I hadn't checked my existing GET/Schneider Ultimate module, thinking it was a proprietary item, only to discover that it was in fact a regular keystone jack clipped into the module which cost under £3.00 and which just clips into the rear of the module. Needless to say the ones I purchased are being returned for a refund.
      CAT6 Punchdown Keystone (Blue) - £2.99 (goo.gl/rOlv7a)
      CAT6 Tool Less Keystone Jack (White) - £2.74 (goo.gl/LUHLgB)

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Hi, yes I enjoyed the break thanks!!!!!Yes, most of the modules are interchangeable as long as you get the correct type, from memory there are 3 main types:1. Keystone Jacks, clip in from behind and the dust shutter is fitted to the faceplate.2. Euro modules 50mmx25mm (the most common)3. LJ6C modules 38mm x 25mm (the least common)the only problem that you sometimes have when you switch between brands is they may not fit flush with the faceplate so sometimes the module may stand proud a few mm.You just gave me another idea for another video, I could do one on the different modules!!!!!!!!!!!!!Vince

    • @Ripperoo2010
      @Ripperoo2010 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My Mate VINCE A video on keystone jacks would be a good idea.
      I never even knew of these keystone jacks until recently.
      IMHO, with the increasing number of streaming mediums now available (Netflix, Prime, iPlayer to name but three), more people will want to get the max possible performance from their network and upgrading to CAT6 (including data sockets) may be the way to go for some people.. So knowing they only have to change the keystone jack as opposed to the grid module or entire faceplate will make things easier and less expensive for a lot of people.
      For instance, I had a 1G/2-module 'Schneider Ultimate Grid Moulded' faceplate which had Cat5e module and BT socket module and because Schneider apparently don't do a CAT6 module for the 'Ultimate Grid Moulded' range, I ended up ordering a Schneider Euro 1G/2-module faceplate plus CAT6 Euro module and BT socket Euro module for the princely sum of around 23.00 + shipping.
      Like I said earlier, the Lindy keystone jack cost less than £3.00 + delivery, so that's a hell of a saving IMHO. Especially if running ethernet to all rooms in a house.
      As for the 'Schneider Ultimate Moulded' regular data socket (non-grid version), these also accept the same keystone jacks.

    This might be a dumb question but, if my internet provider is using cat5e running from the street to my house, would running a cat6 network be pointless? Is that even how it works?

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it is not pointless because the internal Ethernet network whether cat5e or cat6 is independent of the network outside in the street. So your internal equipment can communicate with each other using cat6 speeds regardless of the incoming wire.

    • @tacoconch7678
      @tacoconch7678 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct me if I'm wrong. I would go from my router, to an ethernet switch box, to a patch panel, to a wall terminal, and then run solid-core cables through the walls to each room's wall terminals?
      If that's the case, what's the point of the patch panel? Couldn't I just run cables straight from the ethernet switch box to the cables in the wall?

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You only need a patch panel if you have loads of cables. You can just run long patch leads from the router to the PCs/TVs/Laptops etc. If you are running more than 4 cables then you would need a network switch. If you want a neater job then use solid core cable and install wall sockets back to the router and use a patch panel or mini patch panel or even quad plate sockets by your router or network switch and then use short patch leads to connect everything up.

    But why the hell does they still not work sometimes? I might do all right, colors are correct, it seems like they are all at the end of the plug. But still dont work. I even test them with the same tester you have, and all lights are working. And it still dont work! Drives me crazy!
    I have now installed 2 wall sockets. And of course something went wrong. Tried 4 times on each..... Crap on a plater...

    no point using cat6 end that splits if using a cheap ebay mod, where the terminations end up messy. cat6 is total overkill for domestic consumer, cat5e perfect for gigabit backbone.

      @@onfirephotography Actually no, I'm Canadian. And the router was invented in America. So you are saying it wrong, not us! You can pronounce the word "Sky" as "Pffft" it doesn't make it right! Thanks for playing, you lose! ;þ

      @@Lamron333I don’t think that is quite right. Whilst the Router may have been invented in the US, the word is derived from the word route which, in England is pronounced “root” and it was so long before the router was invented. The pronunciation follows from the derivation of the word, hence “rooter” in England.

    This is an obsolete type of wall socket. There are sockets and devices available where you can connect all at once using just ONE SINGLE coaxial cable: terrestrial and satellite TV, high speed data or internet, telephones, .... : www.emp-centauri.cz/index.php?lang=en&page=prodview&id_kateg=4&id_pkateg=47&id=171
