When I was in preschool we had an assignment where we made drawings by combining different body parts of animals. Body of ostrich with head of a crocodile lol. This always reminds me of that.
I completely forgot about this game, I used to play also as a child on the demo version with my friend. And somehow I ended up remembering this game. Despite playing the game last time maybe around 2005 or 2006. Thank you for the nice video!
Really good review, I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said. On a whim I searched steam for IC and was honestly surprised to see it available. Like you it was a staple of my childhood and still holds a place as one of my favourite RTS's of all time. I've just done a run of the campaign, now I'll do another run on a harder difficulty w/o the use of regeneration units, meanwhile I'll pursuade my friends to download it. Anywhoo, good review, very accurate. It was an enjoyable viewing, thanks again!
The first time I was introduced to this game was when I went to visit my cousin in Spain. He asked me to help him with this game, and I had no idea what it was. I got so hooked on this game that I played it constantly while being there. I forgot about the game for several years until I remembered the name last year and bought it right away. It was still as good and as magical as the first time I played it. I am not a big fan of strategy games, but this one is definitely a childhood favourite of mine.
I'd love to see an HD Revamp of the game, if I'm being honest. Because the game deserves so much more attention and love, and bringing it into higher graphics would be awesome!
This game is on my favorites of all time, there's a special charm about it that makes me feel absolutely amazing when playing it. It sucks that the game died the way it did. They had plans for a sequel from Nordic, but then the entire community just, vanished. In 2018 the community page went absolutely silent and now all I have is a hole left in my heart where IC was. I'm gonna miss it, people should've given it a bigger shot.
The fact that this game's support was dropped and or a sequel was never made is such a crime. Been playing since it came out and still do here and there. One of my favourite games ever.
It's such a great game. I was ecstatic when THQ Nordic brought it to Steam and GOG. I really hope it gets the recognition it deserves. Relic made some of the best RTS's in the day. :)
I couldn't agree more. With how much tech and games have developed since 2003, we could have a huge sequel on our hands. The creature combo creations alone would drive massive interest in the game I feel.
Thanks for making a video about this, I was wondering if it would even work on modern hardware; nice to know it not only does but is available thru GoG and Steam for such a low price! I was 13 when I first played the demo which I got out of PC gamer - I actually still have the exact disc too. Definitely gonna fire this up again. Fun fact: when I searched “Impossible Creatures” on TH-cam just a handful of months ago there were hardly ANY videos on it, and now it looks like people are finally taking notice. Let’s hope the multiplayer servers stick around for a bit longer because I feel a lot of RTS fans owe it to themselves to check this one out, if only for a few plays.
EDIT: Now that I look it seems like there’s way more videos than I first found, which is weird since I remember there only being years-old ones that were super low quality. Still, the original point stands...
I've been searching for this game for so long! I remember seeing it in my friends house when I was in elementary school and the cover art really made an impression on me
Cheers! Yeah the second I saw it on steam it was an instant rebuy for me lul. Shame that's there no real remaster or HD upgrade but it's good enough for me!
I first found it because it was in the shops. I would browse video games in the various shops that sold them when I was younger. My killer combo was eagle hippo. They could take a beating and still keep swooping from the skies onto the enemy base.
As much as I love the additions of Insect Invasion, especially the Loner ability, they kind of ruined early game Panther builds with it. Panther + Komodo Dragon could offer a ridiculously powerful Level 2 melee unit, but now that combo is a minimum Level 3. That being said, Panther Loner creatures are goddam amazing and fit my playstyle (harass + hold the line while I build the real army for the coup de grace).
Man I loved this game so much, playing it after school with my friend and creating new species was awesome. Probably gonna download it again and play it again. I really wish there was a sequel
I wish this style of campy, cartoony, over-the-top yet extremely creative video games ended up dominating the market instead of rehashes and endless sequels, prequels, and iterations of decades-old game titles. Impossible Creatures is one of the best RTS games ever.
My friend from elementary school had the game and introduced me to it. It's one of those games I can always go back to, and there was a time where I'd put it as my #1 favorite.
