  • Impossible Creatures - Remember when you were a kid and you’d draw tigers with wings, sharks with claws, bears with giraffe necks and wolf-skunks? You don’t? Well, I’m sure someone out there did, because they made a game about it. A game that is fundamentally stupid in the best ways possible, Impossible Creatures. And because I forgot to tell this joke in the video. What do you get if you cross an Elephant with a Rhino? Elefino!… which you can actually see in action in the game.

    I had a period in my life where I played RTS games nonstop. I hate RTS games and back then I hated them too but I loved building massive bases. Whenever the AI or players attacked I'd usually rage and try again in a new match. Impossible Creatures was the one RTS I actually was good at and played to win. It had the perfect balance for me- few structures, straightforward tech trees, few units (technically). I eventually got to the point of min/maxing my units and they became so busted it ruined all the fun, hippo dragonflies that hit for about 80 damage and flew incredibly fast doing instant swooping strikes, whale moose with nearly 1k health.
    That game taught me a lot about enjoying games. The evils of min/maxing to suck all life out of a game will never taint me again!

    A friend of mine introduced me to this game some fifteen years ago and gave my name to a camel with a porcupine's face which would constantly jump while running. I immediately fell in love with Impossible Creatures.

      Agsma, Just Agsma I introduced four or five different friends to this game and they all at least enjoyed it.

    On the subject of balance:
    The base game (and Insect Invasion expansion) is indeed hideously unbalanced (mooselobs and babales anyone?). However, a fan-made mod called Tellurian has drastically overhauled the gameplay, and provides a much more even, balanced experience (as well as adding 25 new creatures in addition to the bonus and II animals).
    It can be found on Steam here :steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=655968653
    Manual download here: www.gog.com/forum/impossible_creatures/tellurian_mod_link
    I encourage anyone who wants to see some more life breathed into the game (or just wants to play with 25 new wacky creatures) check it out. it's also the primary mod for multiplayer at the moment, so definitely get it if you're looking to play online.

    For those who may find this...
    Hey there, I'm one of the more active players in the community over on IC Steam Edition. Multiplayer is indeed still active as Nordic was generous enough to revive ICO. Should any of you guys have any interest in playing multiplayer with us, feel free to join the IC Steam Multiplayer Group: steamcommunity.com/groups/iconline Maybe I'll see some of you on ICO someday

    This game looks prettier and more organised than I had expected. Not my kind of genre, but I might check it out on a sale anyway

    • @VisserZer0
      @VisserZer0 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's on sale right now. $2.49 on Steam for two more days.

      This is the kind of game I prefer to buy on GOG. For sentimental reasons.

    • @VisserZer0
      @VisserZer0 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, it's on GoG too, just not on sale. $9.99.

      Thanks, I also noticed that ;) Plenty of games on the backlog while waiting for the next GOG sale

    oh man, I loved this game to death, but considering I was a child when it was new, I remember finding it brutally difficult after a couple of missions. However the animal editor was half the fun anyway-

    I kind of cant help but think that having a faction where a good chunk of their roster was normal human units which from a balance point are more reliable (mind you they can still create creature units of their own just not as many) but can be swamped when faced by stronger later level army units which might have been a nice contrast to showcase how interesting and worthwhile it is to do the creature combination thing would be. Plus with the games cheeky self awareness it wouldve also worked well as a joke.

    This and Warzone 2100 were my RTS bread and butter after Age of Empires.

    I also disagree with the comments regarding armies and losing the game automatically if you can't exactly counter your enemy. In multiplayer games, especially at a high playing level, army design is one of the least important factors for winning the game. There are some standard army formats that most people use, which prepare you for attacks at any stage in the game (while still leaving individual creature design totally open). If you have several low level creatures because you're planning on rushing, as per your example, then you've just made a poor army in general and likely would have lost no matter what. You typically don't need more than two level 2 units, for instance (maybe three).
    Armies can be tailored to a specific strategy, but it's still in your best interest to have a solid selection of creatures available at each research level (aside from level 1, which is currently useless).
    As long as the army is well-balanced, it definitely takes the backseat to actual playing ability.
    The "best in show" tab at the end of the match is also a complete joke, honestly, and I don't recommend anyone listen to it (same goes for the "army analyzer" in the combiner itself). Army design can be daunting at first, but we have some guides, as well as a fairly helpful community, so anyone digging into multiplayer for the first time should be able get into the swing of things without too much issue.

      VisserZer0 you’re right about level 1 creatures. They almost never have a lot of health and it’s better to build up your base rather then create level 1 creatures v

    • @VisserZer0
      @VisserZer0 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, henchmen and soundbeams just straight up beat them lol. The rusher almost always ends up worse off than the victim. Level 2 is a different story entirely though.
