As a Thelemite I think this was a very good talk and I learned some new perspectives. I had always assumed that Crowley's sex magic was influenced by tantra. I didn't know that such a connection hasn't been well established and might not exist.
When Crowley rejected Christianity he picked up Buddhism. Any similarities between Thelema and Buddhism are not coincidental. Crowley said that the principle difference between the two was that Buddhism focused on sorrow whereas Thelema focused on joy.
Fun note... so the unicursal hexagram is often used to symbolize Thelema and of course I noted the shirt and the earrings. A few years ago I was eating in a fast food restaurant with my daughters. I noticed someone with a t-shirt with a unicursal hexagram. As he walked by I stood up, put out my hand to shake, and said "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law." The man looked confused but shook my hand. I indicated his shirt and the symbolism and he told me it was merchandise from the band Bring Me the Horizon. I notice your shirt is also from that band :D

I think that the main difference between Crowley 's Magick ( and in general westerrn Magick) and eastern occultism is that western magicians are focused on action, rather in contemplation. Buddhism's aim Is to liberate the practioner from suffering through experience of the illusion of reality. Western occultism Is more focused on making active changes in reality, though in both paths the practitoners have tò be aware about the different levels in wich reality can be divided.

Crowley got his ceremonial magic from grimoires & the Golden Dawn, his sexual magick from the O.T.O. what was his was his writings about these & of course Thelema, which was connected to Rabalis, in other words most of his core stuff wasn't original, but presented in such a wonderful irreverent witty way.
If every intentional act is a magickal act, then how can it not be for all?
Why do people leave out coitus sublimatus, dual consciousness & rising on the planes with his sexual magick?
Think of the 3 main Thelemic statements as mathematical equations, Do What Thou Wilt (collapsing) = Love Under Will = a Star
In "Magick in Theory & Practice" he states that rising on the planes is an essential part of Magick!

Angela, thank you so much for introducing Prof Marco through your channel. He was so interesting what a broad knowledge, an extensive knowledge which he wears lightly and describes in such a way as to be so understandable, so natural, so modern…as a small remark considering correspondences…I went to put a “like” on this video and couldn’t believe that the number of likes recorded to that exact time was…666….I was next 667….does this make me the neighbour of the Beast?….Thank you so much, a big personal message of my thanks to you for your channel, your videos. You are wonderful, I’m so glad I came across you….possibly an unfortunate term of phrase in context to the later part of this video….I believe Crowley considered humour important….I must say, the child in my old brain picked something up in the video, for which I feel I should apologise, but that’s because of the way I was bought up…..when the Prof was discussing the order of people first discussing certain sex magic theories….”…who came first…”…..Sending positive thoughts to you from this your humble viewer, this student of the esoteric….this wanderer on the path…Mark…x

2 things that are interesting in Crowley's numerology chart. First is the number 6 appears 3 times in his name, which if you add all 3 you get 18, you reduce 18 to 9. The number of divine completion. The second is the master number 44 in his expression number( located in the core numbers). This number is rare to find in people even today. What the number 44 signifies is world leader, which we are of course not ready for today. We of course know that most people were certainly not ready for Crowley, so you can see how these numbers make sense. Also seeing 6, 3 times shows you are possible source for the beast 666. I'm leaning towards the beast being pure slander though.

Small question if you could confirm...Did Crowley actually graduate from Cambridge? Great interview. Thank you.
Edit: (after hearing the whole talk) Conditional implications toward culture and aboard. My two seconds worth (pun intended - not that its true but i had to throw it in as a starting point)....randolf (i need to read him) apparently focused on the importance of the females needs...in short i interpret it as not just the wild woman instinct but the inevitable nurture and building of all things good (2 seconds vs. 2 hours) fast forward to the male wants...and you find a very short Crowley clip. Although one might argue since he did play for both teams maybe he was tying to arrive at his own synthesis and ran out of fuel.
So...itemize the two and you have: A. feeding the hungry - shelter for all- delayed gratification - building not tearing down - appreciation - organics - generally nurturing being (ontic reference) the female current. Then B. Capitalism - consumerism - right here right now - might makes right - fight gets night - war - the stereo typical male current. So.....put all that together (so much more not added) and the hope is to reach a balance..be it unification harmony or what have you. One would think the Covud criss would have spurred on world peace buy alas we (humans) are not quick study's. Yup clear as mud to me.....that's all. Pass it on...curious on his thoughts.

I have to disagree with the good professor on his point that Crowley's system is not consistent with Magick being for all.
I think the prof is missing the point that Crowley was saying basic simple aspects of Magick can be understood and used by all, while the exceptional people will
    go on to higher aspects.
He promotes a system of self-initiation which the practitioner must do for themselves independent of any elite or group.

Make shift .. prayer rug, large beach or bath towel, magic marker a boarder along the edges of the towel. Draw a large circle to fill the center, then draw what every symbols that take your fancy.
a.) Pull your bed from the wall and draw a magik circle around the bed, lay the rug where you want to do the main action, cover with sheets.
b.) Magik circle the floor with the rug in the center, light your candles, cast your spell duration, hide everything else, cover the rug with a blanket and set up your party zone.
c.) You and your partners' write/ paint the symbols on the rug casting a group spell invocation enchantment to call in the spirits, then have some toe curling screaming fun. Do not be surprise the anyone of your partners take/ steal the rug after wards, I just got tired of buying new rugs and spending over a dozen hours fine detailing the symbol artwork just to have it walk off after a few nights.
d.) Paper craft, folding a normal sheet of paper into a small self contain envelope.
Take paper, write spell, fill the paper with artwork, fold paper, and hand off to buyer or drop spell " scroll " on target. Dropping spellnotes is a .. Bad .. way to bring trouble your way. People are still superstitious as hell, and there is legal stalking problems. Also the .. imaginary friends .. I had since childhood love their pranks when it comes to my spellcasting.
c.) Gentlemens' clubs are a great place to collect .. energy .. and the dancers found great use from my spellnotes, no one, I mean no one wanted to wear any of my animal masks. Raven is an old totem friend of mine and I freak people out in low lighting wearing a crow cap hat mask.
Also other than a few dancers or close friends from work or other practicers, no one wanted to put a bit of spit, drop of blood, and a few bits of hair to burn to create a dot of .. ink .. to draw a spirit to power the spell. The spirit just spikes the raw emotion and feeds off what emotion the other two people put during fun time. Then again, if you want one or more ravens bickering over how they want you the write the poem spell along with how the roses are drawn, be my guest, go right away.
One time at one place the dancer/witches called a spirit of Egyptian Bastet into the dance club, I had a mountain lioness rubbing up against me for half the night, with my co workers saying, " I though you said you weren't into .. blonds ?"

I am a committed Christian and I definitely smashed the like button. :-) There is a certain fascination driven by fear regarding topics such as these. That is unfortunate. Rather, I just find it to be fascinating in and of itself to learn more about what others believe and think, what it entails from an objective or academica standpoint and why.
I do wonder about the prevalence of various forms of sex magick practice in modern- and postmodern western society. Which countries have the most practitioners and why? What are the demographics of practitioners? I come from the Caribbean originally. Many people in that part of the world have heard of what are essentially sex magick practices among certain ethnic groups within a certain social class (usually Caribbean-Latin, low income populations) although the dominant religion is Christian. Others may think of the "special party" scenes in Eyes Wide Shut, assuming that predominantly high income and high class caucasians may practice certain forms. Think also of the Q-Anon conspiracy theorists.
And in how far appreciatory expressions such as "the wonder of the miracle of life" or "since conceiving, I have a new appreciation of the meaning of life" and so on, can be seen as current day elements of a kind of loose sex magick appreciation. Or even the idea of individuals binding in uniquely powerful ways during lovemaking that is not possible outside of the physical act. Not so much within the framework or systematization of sex magick for material benefits (as Prof Pasi mentions from 42:00). Rather within the second category of spiritual enlightenment or spiritual evolution (as Prof Pasi mentions from 44:10). Just wondering what an academic researcher would think about that.
Thanks for sharing. By the way, I found your channel earlier this year from the video of your friend from 'Religion for Breakfast". You are both very, VERY good at sharing the academic fun!

What I believe in personally as a monotheistic Thomist Catholic Christian I refer to as 'grace' which is like 'gratias' in Italian and 'gracias' in Spanish. I pray, but I would not utilize the word 'spell' as spell has often been claimed to mean to 'throw something against.' As for 'magician,' that word originated with the ancient Canaanite Christian who became a Gnostic Shimon Magus, who was paid by the Jewish Sanhedrin to follow the Apostle Shimon Peter to Rome to oppose the ministries of the Early Church.

@@drangelapuca We are spared from death sometimes supernaturally, if not always, we are spared from death. That is one way of seeing what I am trying to explain.
So a parallel dimension envelopes the person and you are spared from death. That is what I mean.
Someone walking through the desert and lost, suddenly rescue shows up, or an Oasis suddenly appears, it does so magically / supernaturally.
We are born with Divine Expectations to thrive and to trust. THIS IS THE LAW we know instinctively.
      Where is God?
      What a shame.
I was the sun come up in the western sky at 7 am in the morning in August 2016. I believe/experienced the day go back from July 8 to July 7, 2016 at 2:30pm. I started going through severe dimensional traversing at that time. I need help, but then I realize I saw the sun come up in the west and it makes me angry cause I was disabled at age 13 and if God is right there able to protect me, but instead allowed me to be severely disabled, that makes me very angry with God.
I am equal with God, or obviously we are better than God or whatever TYRANT is controlling the system we are living within.
that is where I am at.
I know it is a leap of concept/faith. concept mainly.
I swear on my soul, I saw the sun come up in the western sky in August 2016. Absolutely it did. We are in a Holodeck like in Star Trek, that's what I have experienced. I don't know who to talk to about this though. Hopefully others on here will engage with me about this.

In a discussion I had in college, somebody told me that Crowley's published volumes on Magick were all intentionally limited by him either by holding back essential information or intentionally inserting misleading instructions with the intention that initiates or students under an instructor could be corrected with the proper instructions but random readers would have limited results without undergoing formal initiation.
This info seems to me at odds with the idea of "democratization of Magick" so I'm having difficulty internalizing this.
Was my initial informant wrong in his beliefs about this? Or is it still somehow possible that both statements might be true?

Esoteric mysticism is both hidden and meant to be hidden. There is some assumption that the person practicing knows something about esoteric practices, and is trying to "improve" such practices. Failure to understand the esoteric nature of mysticism can lead to delusional behavior.

I dont know why intercourse as a component of belief rises in the 19th century. But from a historicity of documents are concerned, the relevation of both sumerian, babylonian and ugaritic documents have revealed a tremendous amount of information of the role of ritual intercourse is mesopotamian and canaanite belief.
There were temple priestess (gender here is often not clear) and the priestesses an their initiates engaged in ritual sex, in some cases as a rite of passage. The annual kingship ceremony, at least at one time and in politically important city-states like Uruk, Ur and Nippur involved ritual sex (however some say this is acted out possibly not done). The importance of the ritual act in near eastern culture was designed to demonstrate a candidates prowess in war by his public virility. In canaanit culture there were sanctioned prostitutes. In the bible these prostitutes are thinly disguised in the story of Tamar. And of course biblical apologist woukd say this story was from before Moses and the law. However scolars almost unanimously agree that the storied elements of genesis are anachronistic, they are stories from a later period imprinted upon an earlier past. Dr. Kipp Davis believes the story of Tamar and Judah is a parallel of David and his sons, indicating that whoever wrote this story is reflecting on David in the past tense, and thus its likely the notion of sanctioned temple prostitutes was still 'alive' at least before exile. In fact there is growing evidence that Yahudite religion was focused in the south of Israel for most of the first temple period, that the prevailing religion during the period of judges and early kings was Canaanite Elohimism (which is likely the origin of the E documentary source in the Torah).
So lets circumscribe the orthodoxy problem. It really doesnt matter whether it is Jewish or Christian. When some polity comes to the notion of a right doctrine, it means they are contrasting themselves with heterodoxy, which is delineated collectively as heresies. But there is tremendous amount of information in the hebrew and christian bibles that people are practicing mysticism. In the Jewish beliefs before the Jewish War, of the belonging to pharisees, the prototype of orthodoxy, only a couple of percent of Jews. The desert trope in Jewish belief was common to the essenes and to the John the baptist movement. Paul of tarsus has a hallucination and goes into the desert for a few years. In the Jesus movement there is ample evidence that Jesus was a mystic, along with Peter, John the presbyter.
Orthodoxy itself in a doxology represents a set of barriers that restrict new concepts from diluting the established ideas. Mystic judaism and christianity as can be demonstrated by studying heresies shows how commonly mystic interpretations flowed out of 1st century Judaism, and most importantly what we euphemistically now call early christianity. The orthodox church declares that mystical visions which objectify christian concepts are undesired and represent a form of spirtual delusion. They seek to bury the mystic nature of early christianity.
The nature itself of the practice is both important and unimportant. Different set of stimuli are capable of releasing different neurotransmitters in the brain. They inhibit some pathways, some cause certain capillaries in the brain to close, others stimulate areas of the brain. In this way the mystical experiance can be molded by chemicals, iconography, sound and light to shape the outcome. The euphoria experiences in church services is exemplary. Sitting in a hovel staring at ones naval reciting the Jesus prayer over and over again probably plays havoc on vaso-vassel stimulation pathway and manifests in the mind as demons and devils (it can be likened to Bill Cosby's Sausage sandwhich, an appartion that appeared after he raided the refridgeratir at 3AM). Tanta result in a state of post coital relaxation which primes meditation and a sensation of the separation of mind from body. Coitus itself is called "the little death" an may elude mystically to meditative experiences which reveal the "dead sprites" (But for natural mystics these are prone to pop up anyway, spirit guides are often past ones, family members).
But unless one is a highly disciplined mystic many, if not all, of these various categories of "sprites" are already part of the mystics point of reverence, a diving board over a pool which the mystic expands upon. Widely held delusions are compounded by more delusions and the mystic practices appreciate the profane (Magical, illusory, interpretive) and bury the profound. There can be almost no dispute that this is what happened in the first century of Jesus following, the sanctioned outcome 2 centuries later was Johannian christianity topped off with trinitarian doxology.
What we call the occult, today, at least the esoteric part, is simply mysticism with a heretical collective of heretical ideas as a point of reverence. The similar practiced cloistered in a monastery are not considered the occult but use essentially the same parts of the brain.
Noone essentially argues they are going to train to become a better mystic so that the ultimate goal is delusion, this is an unintended consequence of those practices in which the point of reverence expands beyond socially accepted norms. For example christians say Jesus is god and they see him sitting next to god on a throne in the glory of light on the clouds in heaven. Most critical scholars dont belive Jesus declared himself to be god or even annointed (christ). These visions of Jesus as a messiah and god are socially accepted delusions in christian communities. The delusion were envisioned, enterpreted and successively expanded upon by mystics of the first to third centuries. Unitarian belief systems look at commonality in regional commonly held delusions (Manicheans are probably the best early example within mystery religions). But since the delusions are derived from similar mystical experiences interpreted in different ways, we cannot argue that some averaged out delusional version is not but still a delusion.
Conclusion here that the use of a bunch of tricks for meditations or group experiences that may well produce a desired product, and even some famous "explorers", songwriters, writers, sage or mage may have used these practices, but more often than not delusional outcome is more likely than "genius","christ", ect. (lets also keep in mind that the mystic jesus was in a year and a few months of his baptismal exoerience, crucified) But also these practices In a fair number of cases result in drug or sex addiction. There are many profound insights that can be gained by meditation, but the most reliable are those gained by practices with a "feathers touch". Natural mystics, in my opinion, are a thing, and they should endeavor to refine their practices away from needing props. But technique-based mystics should be extremely careful not to put excessive weight on high yield methods (like drugs, tantras, starvation, desert questing) if the "feather touch" methods dont work, forcing will not produce the profound, only the profane.

No wonder he rebelled as he did. I have had many friends who you refer to as 'goth' or 'Gothic,' which actually has some origins from the architecture of the Upper Room in Jerusalem and the Germanic tribes of Ostrogoths and Visigoths which is a part of the history of Byzantium and Constantine the Great. REPENT or PERISH 1 Corinthians 6 Sexual Immorality
12 “I have the right to do anything,” you say-but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”-but I will not be mastered by anything.
13 You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.” The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.
14 By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also.
15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never!
16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.”
17 But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.
18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.
    19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;
20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
