Those alloys are commonly called "Gullideckel" wheels, or manhole covers. I think they better suit the W126 than the bundt-style wheels as well.

300k? Are we talking miles or kilometers? Highest I have seen so far was well in excess of 700.000 kilometers (440k-ish miles) - albeit on an older model than even this one. In fact Mercedes used to be so proud of these cars' durability that they handed out badges to cars passing 500.000km (300k-ish miles) which could then be mounted to the car's grill.

Those colors on the driveshaft are balancing marks and weights applied by Mercedes to eliminate any driveline vibrations or harshness. It’s important that when the driveshaft are separated from the middle to replace the center carrier bearing mount the both ends of the driveshafts should be precisely marked so they don’t get out of balance after reassembly.

I've only just entered the MB world with an 80 240d manual, but I could open and close a door all day ,and release the emergency brake.
Haha,at first I was fooled by how quiet the brake release was and put my foot under the pedal to make sure it was all the way up 😂
And the door,I swear you could blow at it hard and it latches closed like a bank vault with the most satisfying click ever.

In August I bought a light Ivory 1985 380 SE. I drove it home to Tennessee from San Diego. I rebuilt the fuel distributor, new plugs, fuel injectors, replaced the timing chain ( dual roller), upper guides, tensioner and guide. The upper guides had broken and one piece was on a ledge about to fall to the crankshaft gear. The interior is great, only a 3mm long crack in the dash near the speaker cover.
It’s been in the body shop for 2 months now. A drunk off duty cop ran into it while it was in a parking lot. Then he backed up and did it again. His cop buddies came when I called, no sobriety test for him, he’s in the “club”!
Hopefully I get it back soon, thanks for the video.

Hello from Australia. I had a 300 SE and the cruise control stopped working for me too. A reconditioned control module was around $600. After looking at the forums it seems that over time some dry solder joints raise their ugly heads. So I removed the module from under the dash, which is a pretty easy job and resoldered every joint. The whole process including R&R the module took just two hours and the problem was fixed. Also a really good source of Mercedes information can be found on a TH-cam channel called Mercedessource. His channel is a must see if you have a Mercedes and you have a problem that is new to you. Great choice of car mate. There is simply nothing that drives like a W126 except a W124 or maybe a W140.

These wood center consoles do not have a lacquer coating them but rather a two-part polymer coating that has a dye in it making it hard to see through. The only way to remove this polymer coating is with a heat gun and as soon as it starts to bubble you scrape it off with a dull putty knife. I refinished all of the wood trim on my 1980s 300sd Mercedes as it had the same problems with the center console cracking. once all the wood trim is stripped I used the UV blocking Epifanes Clear Marine Varnish.

I had a 1986 420 SEL. Ran it up to 260,000 miules. It still ran beautifully. The car never had any big problems, just regular maintenance. It looked really good. Nobody in the family wanted to drive it anymore. I sold it 10 years ago for 1000. It wasn't on the lawn for 30 minutes with the for sale sign before a woman bought it. I really miss it.

First place to look for rust it up under the rear screen. Often not noticed till to late.
Really prefer the Euro lights and bumpers luckily we got those in Australia.

A real specimen of a vehicle you can truly say they don’t make em like they use too applies to the 126
The 126 of MB where style simplicity and reliability hit the peak yes 123 is just as reliable but not nearly as slick and good looking exterior or interior
    Great purchase and GOD bless

Any MB dealer will look up the 4 digit radio code. Nice thing about MB locking, you cannot lock yourself out as the door must be closed completely and then locked with the key.
HP is 201 with 228 lb ft of torque. Not a lot but a great cruiser nonetheless.

Gorgeous W126. Wish we still had our 86 300SDL in 904 midnight blue with cream beige leather. Go with Euro headlights. You may need to replace a few items but these cars will last forever, if not totaled. They are not easy on gas. Cruise control is easy to fix. The engine is clean and free of oil with any of the minor leaks underneath being easily fixed so that engine is in great shape. Keeping the wheels is a good idea. Value is relative... and you explained it. Suspension issues are easy to repair. You've got a good car which is in need of some TLC. It will serve you very well for a long time. They ride on the road, with superb control, like a dream. Gotta watch the speedo as you will be cruising at over 100mph and it will feel like 70. Our 86's exhaust was original and it had 186k miles on it.

I owned an 89 420SEL in Alpine White. The only issue that I had to deal with that was rather expensive to fix was the head gasket replacement. Had other items such as timing chain done at the same time since I was paying for much of the labor. Solid car and always ran well. Premium fuel only!

I may be a bit late with the comment, sorry.
We had a 500 sel in the nineties. It was burgundy with a cream interior, and Mercedes 8 hole alloy wheels. My favourite feature, was the economy meter in the left hand instrument cluster. As soon as you even thought about pressing the accelerator, it surged into the red. My Dad used to joke that, instead of an economy meter, it should have been a photo of my bank manager frowning at me.
I loved that car, I was sorry to see it go.

These are going for more money now because this is from the Era of Mercedes when they were MERCEDES. A few years ago there was a W126 Coupe for sale at a car museum where I lived near Petit Jean, AR. I want it badly but knew I didn't have the money to maintain it properly. It was a total Coast-to-Coast Cruiser. I like that Mr. Wizard checks tires.

W126 exhausts are designed to rust sacrificially to save the unibody from rusting. Same as the battery tray.
My 89 300se has 336,000klms on the clock and I recently drove it the length of Australian east coast and back to Melbourne.
No gimmicks, no knickknacks, no infotainment screens. Vintage grand touring comfort and simplistic luxury.

drove the 560sel for about 12 years. know it inside out. think i gave up too easily when the hvac quit up inside that massive dash. once i got the rear end sorted out with the hydro-pneumatics and all - she was just a pleasure/blast to drive, but mind you that took years and lots of money. that mated up to a rebuilt tranny and wow - what a nice feeling drive train. unfortunately my friends camry would just walk away on the highway and i couldn't handle it. no way a camry should walk away from a 560sel!!! she wasn't running right obviously and i didn't know why so i traded her for a bmw540 - another money trap but what a beautiful car it was.
