I am a Union man myself, but I have to say this is absolutely wonderful entertainment for fans of either code. No quarter is given by either side. A great game where everyone gave their all .... excellent stuff !!
I was at that match, I thought my heart was going to stop at times, probably the best game I’ve ever seen for sheer thunderous effort, guts and stamina. Boyd was awesome, Hanley too, the running feud between Cullen and Goodway was primeval. All in all fantastic.
This is Gold. Pure Gold. Warrington in that all white blue primrose V and Vladivar Vodka sponsor. Les Boyd in the front row with Kevin Tamati for gods sake, 2 of the hardest men ever to played rugby league. Add in Adrian Shelford in the prime of his career for wigan and Hanley playing in the centres in his Black Pearl stage My God you've got something here. Old Wilderspool under floodlights new years day a proper derby atmopshere of pure hatred amongst the players add in torrential rain and you've just got pure dare I say it rugby league. None of this modern day crap. Players wanted to win and fought to the end and battled unlike today where they dive and milk penalties. The old Fletcher Street end and the old Railway Away end just bouncing. I'm a Widnes fan of old and went Wilderspool many a time for those derbies which were superb, and I also went watch Warrington a fair few times when widnes were away. Some classy players on both sides way too many to mention. I'd have paid good money to have been at this match. RIP Old Wilderspool and the Winter New Years Day Derbies. Thank You for these magical memories of a better time.
used to watch rugby league with my nan on Saturday afternoons whilst my mum and dad were at the football, she used to say its a sh*te game but you get see some good punch ups...LOL
I never liked either of these sides, but I have to admit that was a great match, from the days when rugby league was a winter game. I am afraid that it lost a lot of its appeal for me when it became a summer sport and television money was thrown at the game. I know the pitches are better now and the players are much fitter, but I can't help feeling that the game has lost much of its soul. The gap between Super League and the rest has grown far too wide, as Leigh have found out recently. Back in the 1980s, the clubs that got promoted usually went straight back down, but they did win enough matches to make it interesting.
Brilliant! I’m proud to say “I was there”... God, we hated Warrington! Don’t get me wrong, Saints and Leeds weren’t exactly on the Christmas card list but we really hated Warrington... and didn’t the players know it!! ❤️❤️❤️
Great stuff. How good was Les Boyd even a decade past his best? Funny that Graeme West played the whole game. He was the one who started it all. He wanted to kill someone right from the first tackle.
Thanks for sharing this great match. Been years since I saw rugby league. Some amazing players from that era. How much would Gregory, Edwards, Hanley and the likes make in the modern union code?
Imagine the autographs if they got them. The players hands would be shaking from adrenaline, muddy smudge all over the page (they might even use the pen to get the mud out of their ears). But it would be the little tyke's most prized possession, and he would be a HERO in the playground when he got back to school.
Don’t forget this was a local production for local consumption by Micron Video with a local head teacher called John McDermott the commentator, he wasn’t a professional but he knew the game inside out and did an excellent job.

Proper Rugby League,,miss this !!
I am amazed. Four players sent off and Les Boyd played all 80 minutes. And had a great game too.

Ahhhhh man..I love watching sport from the 80's... commentary was on a different level back then.
Was just thinking the same thing!
What a game. Pure grit. ❤

I was at that game. Remarkable - it had everything including being the only game that I attended wearing wellington boots as it was so wet.
I Just saw this now, this was an unreal game of football, plenty of passing in the wet and stepping tremendous stuff. What a game.
@J G You have posted this (copied and pasted) comment on other videos. Your point is?

Ellery Hanley , what a player .
He was one of the great characters of his era.. far too mouthy though..;-)
Incredible video, thankyou.
Football ( soccer ) and Cricket for me but when it comes to Rugby league is "my" code. More exciting and if I am honest its also a class thing
proper rugby league
not wrong bruh
Brilliant; what a game.
Very good commentator. Very good game.

The days of proper ruggers, not like today's crap...Love the kids at the end....Those were the days
Because all the players weren't built like brick outhouses, the games were quicker and the players more mobile and skillful than today.
what a cracking blood and thunder match, that les boyd was some player and to think it was all in the mud
Boyd was a nasty grub

Thanks for posting Bren
Classic game this. Horrible conditions yet relatively clean play (skills wise) and a frenetic pace.
Great game , some great players in both teams there. Bring back the biff lol
Bloody good game that. And I know nothing at all about rugby league.
This was a time when I could understand the rules :)
What a tremendous game. It could’ve gone either way.
My goodness commentary has come a long way since then. Thank goodness.
Good football. Very expansive.
Rugby League has gone sadly downhill since those days.
No character now and the forwards are the same size as the backs.
It just plays like a load of knobs from the gym got together these days.
The mighty WIRE 💪🏼🏉
I´m a catalonian rugby fan . Incredible rugby match, 100% rugby !!! but , were allow these lot of high tackles in all matches?
A lot more than should have been allowed
Fantastic 👍🏼 ✨ ✨
Hero .... Iro ( and as Kenny Everett would say) ...., let call the whole thing ooooffffffff!
I followed all the kiwis (not many ) back then, remember him and Kevin at manly
back in the day proper rugby league.
A good game in those conditions🏈
Real Rugby league 👍 None of these robots that play game now.
Just slightly sped up?
WIRES WIRES !!
brillllllllliant
That’s when rugby was rugby
You can see that Wigan had the money back then. Clean dry shirts for the second half. How those players were pampered eh?!!! Lmao.
Wat great athletes
Tremendous handling in terrible conditions. A proper game of rugby league. Not as good now.
Really good point actually. Very few handling errors. Amazing defence as well. I thoroughly enjoyed this pair of videos. Great upload
Yeah agree - the thing that stood out for me was the passing out of the tackle in horrific conditions, takes amazing skill to do that
Those Mitre Multiplex balls used to stick like shit to a carpet
Little kids running on after autographs! You wouldn't get that nowadays

As someone who used to run on, we were mostly after ‘tie ups’ - the bits of fabric players used to hold their socks up.
The commentator was needing 2 tickets to Nottingham .
Nice one.
who is the crap commentator? they're going for the line, they're going for the line, they're going for the line- - isn't that the general idea ?
This commentator is bloody hopeless, surely there must have been someone better?
Don’t forget this was a local production for local consumption by Micron Video with a local head teacher called John McDermott the commentator, he wasn’t a professional but he knew the game inside out and did an excellent job.
Edwards hall of famer....what a joke....
Miaow!!!
One of the greatest ever you muppet
I'm not even a Wigan fan, but i can acknowledge Edwards was class.
