I was there in the half built Stretford End. Total euphoria when Loughlin went in for the try which pretty much clinched it. We played some great stuff in 92/93, pushed Wigan all the way in the league, and the team certainly deserved a trophy for the efforts put in that season. We were expecting more of the same the following year but the sale of Gary Connolly and the horrible injury to Kevin Ward put a huge dent in the side.
After coming so close in 92/93 - this win felt like a release valve to deny that Wigan team a clean sweep. It's funny looking back, as it was only the Premiership. Big ups to Gus O'Donnell and his infinite amount of drop goals!
I think that was a little harsh saying in was only the Premiership as it was probably the 3rd biggest trophy of the 5 on offer back in those days and everyone wanted to get a day out at Old Trafford. I was always gutted when we got knocked out of it.
Great comments, folks, and after the previous year, when we were going to win it until John Holdsworth overlooked Gary Connolly, being dropped on his head by Gene Miles just before half-time, it was sweet, indeed. Do you remember that we very rarely won a match against Wigan when Holdsworth was reffing ; this was a rare occasion. It had to be Robin Whitfield to give us a chance.
