I think most people watching haven’t watched season 4. Don't let this vid fool you, he had less technical knowledge, but he was naturally very talented. He was one of the frontrunners throughout his season.
Not really a frontrunner. I'd probably say he was very average and just barely won against Amina to crack top 10. The real turning point was that draw against Sam, where both of them survived and he just kept getting better and better. In the last 5-6 cooks, the guy just went into a different level. He definitely would've studied and practiced a lot at the MasterChef home every night. And the fact he was quite popular probably allowed him to learn from other contestants.

It's actually a well-established ruse in Australian culture: the carefree (white male) larrikin. If you observe Australian media culture you'll see this character pop up in many different contexts. A common one is to start as a comedy duo and make their way up the entertainment ladder, from radio to TV hosting etc. It's a very easy card for a good-looking Aussie bloke to play because they pretty much get given a whole lot more leeway for otherwise stupid behaviour. It's a harder card for women to play, although someone like Rebel Wilson has definitely broken the mould. The same affordances are not extended to men from different cultures who would be judged extremely harshly for being so willfully dumb.
