But "some people" keep telling me that these Baofengs are just Cheap Chinese junk, and they cant receive anything. Now i'm confuckeld.

I have just bought uv-5R but when entering frequency say 455.550 it say cancelled when input 0 on the end,is the radio set wrong,sorry completely new to this
It's amazing what replacing the antenna will improve - both Tx and Rx. I've heard they can vary by model, but the handful of variants I've bought have all been very capable.
In the back country where there's no cell signal, they've helped us coordinate medical assistance and keep groups informed of each others' location and needs.
The goodness ratio to dollar spend is insane. You get a lot for a very decent price.
For all you Baofeng lovers I spent a few hours working out the extra wide and frequencies on UV-5R for 70cm and 2m. 129.000-178.997Mhz 390.000-528.997Mhz this is far as they go which can RX and TX. If anyone finds out these work on other frequencies please let me know. A like or thanks is good enough credit for me

I have a Baofeng UV-82. It can tranceive from 126.000.

Thanks for the reminder of there is more to radio than just talking. Here in the states you can listen very easily on FM for approach (VHF) and ground stuff (UHF). Thanks for the Frequencies!!!

Any responsible person would never consider transmitting on any frequency used by air traffic, even if it is for ground operations. Your videos are entertaining and full of good, wonderful information. Thank-you for all your hard work and exceptional videos. I am sure I talk for many others. :-)).

Mate, gotta tell you. I've kinda wandered into this world a wee bit by accident (long story... 😂), and now in possession of a pair of Baofengs. I can confirm no CTSS tones at Birmingham Airport.
Uv-17 pro supports those frequencies for Rx. AM 108 to 130 MHz.

This helped me out so much cheers buddy I’ve had my UV5R for a month and not been able to listen to anything on it at all and I’ve watched this and straight away been able to listen to the Birmingham airport control I’m 15 miles away and picking up clear voices
I’m in Birmingham and I use various handhelds to listen to the UHF relay, it does come through really clear and you can get the signal for miles out.
What is the frequency now as I live about the same amount of miles away , cannot get a signal

If you set a channel to a duplex setting of off in Chirp it will disable transmit. A very good safety precaution.

Hi, can i have some advise please, just got a UV-5RIII with the two standard antennas, I live a stone throw away from EGSS approach near your old mate AndyK. Ive tuned into the FM repeater on 455.550 and can only hear STN ground. was thinking i may hear the aircraft when they go onto tower via the repeater? should be able to pick up both ends of any coms on tower feq via the repeater as both ends are clear on the ground?? Appreciate your time and videos. Would a different antenna help or do you think its just how the repeater is set up at Stansted?

I’ve just bought an E-SYNIC (same as Baofeng) UV-5R to listen to Liverpool ATC on a repeater. I’ve typed in the frequency however I just hear static. I live about 13 miles (as the crow flies from LPL - is this too far to listen to the uplink repeater? Please can you advise? Thanks

I actually find the English voice very helpful because when switching between some modes it tells you if you have the voice on and those I use it to know status. I have found no other way to know exactly what is going on without using voice guide there’s several settings that have no indicator that have no lights or any visual indicators that I know of. If there’s visual indicators please let me know because I would be surprised. The main one I use it for is to determine if im in frequency or channel mode. Is there another way anyone? Thanks for any advice. But I don’t see any indication so I leave the voice on so I know what mode im in.

I don't have a Baofeng but over the years I have programmed many UHF radios to listen to these UHF freqs. I always programmed rx only when possible and
if that was not available I programmed the tx to a "safe" frequency 446 or a ham freq. Inadvertent PTT press or equipment fault can occur.
Baofs are FM not AM don't see how...will carry on watching..aha 455.550 MHz FM.. Thanks for this, you're definitely the dude!!!😊❤️✈️

There are several resources for finding out what frequencies are being used.
The US and Canada both publish Air Field directories and approach plates that list applicable frequencies as do maps.
Air Nav is an excellent online resource as well.
And nope you no don’t want to transmit and interfere with aircraft. operations.
The FAA in the US takes a really dim view of that

Military don’t use this mate
Military use 408 to 413 mhz mostly they don't usually repeater air coms but you'll find crash truck, refuel, raf police, and a tower to units on live side channel like raf Northolt on409. 9 been that 25 years
So if u out looking raf bases communications not all 408 409 arwas with 192.8 hz ctcss everywhere, army and navy use gnd freqs as well! Some at same band some at 430 to 440 mhz
And usaf too but most p25 enc though, at fairford ocassionaly 432 mhz repeaters paired with 407, sometimes in clear p25 but usually not
For freqs look at uk scanning directory edition 9 we published lots of CAA 455 and military Base stuff too, yes sone things have changed of course but done are very much still in use but if course some 455 are dmr as well now
For me these are a no go, my home airport in Venezuela has from 118.4 to 132.95mhz :c

Whenever I put in the frequency of my airport (Zaventem Airport Brussels, Belgium) it just dissapears and returns to any other frequency I put in randomly before. Can you please help and tell me why my input frequency just pops away and gets ignored by the Baofeng? I would love to hear the ATC and pilots, they fly pretty low over my house after departing Brussels sometimes.

Which model do you have? I really want to do this and I don’t want to spend like $200 on an airband radio. The only reason I want it is to listen to my local airfield traffic which is only 122.9

I've hacked my uv-5r to listen to airband radio, can't hear much tho since it's AM.
The famous Shoreham airport is close to me. I hope I can pick them up.
They don't have a repeater but last 40 years 169.275 fm, which when an incident happens as wiyh many airfield they immediately switch in tower

LBA Tower is 455.4875 mhz. Narrow FM.
I've unlocked my Baofeng UV-S9 so it goes from 100MHz to 999MHz. Bearing in mind it isn't perfect and can only transmit between certain ranges without losing PLL lock (and outputting additional harmonics outside of its filtered range). I've managed to pick up things that it isn't usually able to receive in other bands.
The reason I hacked it is because the official software broke the tri-band functionality. 😂
You haven't hacked it. You've used Chirp to open it right up. I spent hours finding the extra bandwidth on either side for 70cm and 2m. I will post the Wide banded frequencies in normal comments of this video.

@@d_kortman Get a Wouxun 10 watt KG-UV9H (no, the part number isn't a typo) and get actual AM Aircraft reception instead of hoping your local airport sets up an FM repeater.

Hi nathan no, only the civilian uhf uplinks. Military bases don’t use these. Hope that helps

You can use a regular scanner to get military comms. A cheap one that can get to air band is the Uniden 33XLT

Other military users there don't use the 192.8 hz or I've never found any on there

I’ve seen claims of 35 miles, I can get the Birmingham Airport frequency at the top of Birmingham Library. It all depends obviously what is between you and the airport though.

I’ve been driving up to airports, sitting in my car (most have a small car park for plane spotters etc) and listening to their UHF repeaters for a while now as a sort of hobby. Google tells me it’s actually illigal because it’s not intended for public listening. Is this correct? Am I breaking the law?
Officially it's illegal yes, however, hundreds of people do it, and provided you only listen and don't transmit, they really don't mind. People have stood next to police officers doing it and the police haven't said a word.

Thanks for the informative video. I was under the mistaken impression that aircraft communicate using AM modulation. I will go out and try this out. Have you considered making a video on listening to marine VHF/UHF? I know there are dedicated marine radios, but I would just like to listen in on my Baofeng or similar HT.
Aircraft do use AM. If you listen carefully to the video, there is a UHF fm repeater.
If you Download (Free) the chirp programming software - the marine frequencies are in the list - I have the commercial frequencies (business lite) and marine programmed
