Fireforge Games- The Living Dead Warriors of the Forgotten World!

  • Fireforge took the names of two thing fondly remembered from my youth and turned them into something completely different!
In this box you will not find any tar men, naked punk rockers dancing in cemeteries, zenny, dust dragons, or flying mohawked space warriors.
Instead you'll find sprues of some pretty nice new zombified soldiers!
Zombie soldiers are pretty rare. You usually get armored skeletons instead of zombies. Or ragged zombies. The two rarely mix except for an odd model here or there. Last actual set of armored zombies I can think of were in Confrontation... that was a while ago!
What's on offer is pretty nice step towards having proper soldier zombie representation. The kit fits together well and you have a full complement of either spears or hand weapons, with shields a plenty. I like the spear across the chest option for the models. Something we don't see often.
Two issues nagged me with this- the necks of the bodies for one. They're quiet long and either need to be trimmed down or titled somewhat, or they have a very long neck.
The other issue for me is the amount of models. When people think zombies, they think big hordes. At least that's what I think. With only 12 models in a box I feel it's a little light for mass battles. For skirmishes I think it works great. For RPG encounters when you want something more substantial than wiggly Bones zombies, this might be a nice alternative.
From my preliminary experiments I see these parts working well with Northstar's model lines as well as possibly old Mordheim bits if you've got them laying around. Sadly when filming this I couldn't find the bits I wanted- mainly Frostgrave, Mantic zombie/ ghoul parts, and some free company leftovers. Alas. At least my quickly made Oathmark zombie works.
Take a look at Fireforge's site The starter set for their new game, Forgotten World, while a bit pricier than I like to spend includes a fair amount of models for both sides.
    fireforge-game...
Plus you get bonus points if any of those references rang a bell early on!

I have to second your Frostgrave kitbash suggestion for these. I took the Fireforge LD bodies, reset the feet, dug out the neck with a pin vise, and used Frostgrave heads and weapons (mostly Barbarians and GA Crewmen) to make a battered and beaten warband. Really makes them seem like they've seen some awful s**t in the frozen city.
Haven't done the reverse, but based on your results, it's time to zombify some soldiers!

Honestly I like your idea more- that's what I love about the versatility of those Northstar kits! I'm glad the Fireforge stuff works well with them!

    These are very cool.

Love the channel. I got a laugh at The Return of the Living Dead reference. Keep up the great work.

At 20 euros for 12 it's like $1.85 each, very good.

Taking into account tax and shipping and it probably comes closer to 30.
Still they fill a visually unique niche that nobody else really offers, and it's a nice step up from the same 4 or 5 Bones sculpts used over and over.

Well they may get distributed closer to you at some point, only adding a bit more & less than that 30. At least that seems to be how it's going, so a shirt wait may yield a good result. I'm kinda bored with some of the Bones stuff. I dont care for the material, but they are cheap.

Finally I think I may have found some miniatures that scale with AoS???
OathMark and Frostgrave are a tad small compared with Free Guild Steelhelms…
My last option was to check out Perry Mini’s…
I’m new to the hobby really, but I’m learning a lot..
Although I think GW mini’s are generally excellent quality - I find the variety of poses, heads and weapon options is limited quite often compared to the generally excellent, Oathmark and Frostgrave.
Can you only buy Fireforge mini’s from their website?? Not Wayland Games? Or Travelling man which is where I buy most…

Fireforge should be available through Wayland... I'm guessing? It does seem easier to get ahold of in the UK from what I've seen.

Sad they only have 12 in a box. Their other stuff seems cram packed with figures.

That is the problem with plastic kits. Companies have to cover the very large production costs involved with tooling. These kits were part of a Kickstarter, and, as such the bulk cost for tooling multiple kits at once meant that the number of separate sprues had to be kept to a minimum. The outlying cost for tooling a single sprue is a ridiculous amount. It is in the thousands. For example GW cut their own tooling , including making their own cutters, each of which will last fractions of a second before being replaced. I know this because I live in Nottingham and get to talk to the people who make the stuff for GW.

@@beelzebubbles666 I’d love to meet one the GW “decision makers” to see how they come up with the overall “meta” behind the game. Storylines and other creative aspects of the games.

How many different games do you play against your brother? I never got mine into miniatures, he got into Gundam models instead.

    • @ObscuritiesinMiniature
      @ObscuritiesinMiniature  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

He's pretty much up for anything if I'm not lame and exhausted whenever we have family get together.
We both love the One Page Rules stuff. Fast and efficient. Sometimes we'll sit down and do a proper war game or board game.
I always mention him in the hopes of luring him onto TH-cam to kick knowledge around. Dude is just as bad as me when it comes to encyclopedia- like knowledge of games and models.
Plus he's even more hardcore when it comes to Gundam.

Absolutely, especially if you've got plenty of leftovers bits for converting like most Mordheim players seem to have!

Hello there I hope you are well...a nice kit all day long they would fit into frostgrave, and 12 seems a little small if you want a good sized infantry unit( not sure on price as I sit here now but by the magic of ebay I will soon find out, about a £1- £150 man is fair in my book) but I will have a little moan about the gaming industry in general...such as these soldiers for example...would it have driven fireforge into bankruptcy if they had provided lets call them "living heads" with this set or on the other hand their regularsets with zombie heads so you have a choice?...cheers now

They do have sets of living guys. Similar designed armor and gear, COMPLETELY different sculpts. They're called "Northmen Warriors." They also have sets of bowmen and cavalry to expand their armies.
My gripe is there's so few in the box that most wargamers are going to need to convert up a bunch of extras, and considering the northmen don't fair much better in terms of model quantity I'd be looking elsewhere to expand my undead ranks.
Doesn't help that Fireforge models are hard to acquire outside of internet sales.
