Along with that Nat King Cole Frank Sinatra Ella Fitzgerald dean Martin Sammy Davis Junior, well actually my mom introduced me to The chairman of the board and his The rat pack cohorts, and Bobby D too.

I've noticed several of Bing's songs, esp. those in movies: Example: Singing, "You Keep Coming Back Like a Song," from "Blue Skies." Bing stands motionless, basically, but it's that VOICE, that VOICE that was recognizable around the world that people flocked to. He was wildly popular by his voice--he didn't have "Leading Man" Cary Grant looks, so his singing was front and center, and alot of histrionics, distractions, and other artificial technology, only served to distract or diminish the gift from God he had......so, even if you listen to say, his peak years on CD---1937-1941 range, check out "Deep Purple," "Stardust," (both 1939), "Mexicali Rose," BING'S VOICE was king, and there was no instrumental overpowering a Bing vocal in those days--so the songwriters wrote songs, and the music people arranged to have Bing's voice as THE DRAWING CARD, not instruments. Listening to "Deep Purple," for instance, there is scant background instrumentals--only a slight pattering for ambiance, but it is Bing's VOICE which is front and center. *****(Sorry, my passion is the small nuances, and of course my favorite Entertainer, Bing!)

See this is music that I'd like to hear on the radio rather than the crap we get nowadays. Don't get me wrong there are some songs that are amazing but I think the so called "artists" need to take time to listen to the music of past generations

    • @JohnDoe-zh4li

Tommy Whispers, I'm glad there are more people like me on in this planet. Have you ever heard of 'The Drifters', 'Dion and The Belmonts', 'The Jamies', or 'Danny and The Juniors'? Those were some great bands and singers of the 1950's. Music has changed, but I'm not so sure if it's for the better. Music from my grandparents' time had more tasteful lyrics; you could listen to those songs with your parents without having the 'Clean' version. My great-aunt has an old wooden shoe-shining box filled with tons of 45's including, but not
limited to, Brenda Lee, Conway Twitty, and the Chubby Checker. *Sigh* ... Call me old-fashioned, but I'd take a sixty-something-year-old disc of vinyl over any CD today.

Bing didn't need, as Early Grey said below, he didn't need video and echo effects, flashy dancers behind him, a finger-snapping Orchestra or score-all Bing Crosby needed was a microphone (or not) and a song to sing. Effortless. Genuine. Straight to the heart.

And why isn't Bing screeching over all the other things going on? Then, he's the nerve to sing a whole song without a single cuss word in it. Oh no, no, no, you can understand every word that's being sung. Why that's, unheard of! It will never sell!!! How much things have changed in a single lifetime. RIP: Bing.

The song is rather ironic considering that the inspiration for the title for the person that wrote the song died at age 37 years in a rather sad way, somewhat alone in a New York Citty hotel bleeding on the floor sometime after what was described as a 'fall', and not at all loved nor supported by those in his hometown. Although the person for whom the words 'Dear Hearts and Gentle People' was found written on a piece of paper in his wallet had written the greatest American songs of the nineteenth century, as the youngest in a family of eleven or so children, his older brother burned all the remnants of personal writings that seemed to reflect badly on any family members. And, he never found fame nor fortune in his life. Many people in other countries in ages past thought of his music when the subject of America came up; "I dream of Jeannie", "My Old Kentucky Home", "Way Down on the Swanee River'', "Camptown Races", etc.

Although I love Frank Sinatra more, Bing did have at least one attribute that far surpassed Frank. Like many Frank’s voice diminished over time. Bing’s voice always sounded like a bell no matter what age he himself was his voice never aged with him.

As he got older, Bing said that he dropped the keys of the songs he sang. That is how he maintained his effortless style and delivery. Most singers don't do that.

It's interesting to compare Bing's version with his brother's (Bob) version; Bing is far gentler with the music.

Bob's version has so much more energy it's hard to compare them. Both brother's were doing different things. (But the Bobcats version is better)

I don't think so. Families hide their problems extremely good.
Bing Crosby was a really harsh and aggressiv father, one of his children commited suicide. The world was too perfect to be real

Two of his kids committed suicide, right, but that happened nearly 20 years after his death, when they both were in their 50s. Though one of his sons said he was sadist, another son denied it. So we don't know the truth and I doubt we should care.
