      Hey, why don’t you use da Vinci resolve for I mean it literally works perfectly on every OS and it’s actually way better than premier and final cut for only I think $295 one time payments and you can start practicing on the free version until then. I mean seriously like give it a try. It’s literally replacing Adobe premiere in Hollywood for one thing so that tells you how good it is. It’s pretty hard to use though, but once you get used to it, it’s definitely even way better than final cut, at least for the most part. Seriously, give it a try. I’m sure that especially with the way better color gambit thatthat offers that will be very pleasantly surprise.

      Ubuntu Studio or AV Linux are the best Linux distros for video editing. Not as good as a Mac. But one thing that you probably have never thought of: in Linux you get a quiet environment. No Anti virus humming along. No phone homes. You get the RAM and CPU not being distracted. If you have ever done a 3D render and noticed that the render square went to mud while your anti virus program was scanning, that is the noisy environment that Linux avoids.

    The fact that in 2024 Apple is even selling prosumer level hardware with 8 or even 16GB of RAM and an SSD smaller than what I bought in 2014 is borderline criminal. This much memory is so cheap these days that doubling both would be little more than an accounting error for them. The whole point is to keep people looking to upgrade and if that doesn't work, the SSD now sets the countdown to when that machine effectively becomes a shiny brick.

      M Pro/Max 14" - 16/18 GB
      M Pro/Max 16" - 16/18 GB
      Apple really need to do something! Make sure that all Pro morels got more RAM than Air.
      In the end of the day: what is "Pro"? Apple must be more clear about it! Because of the branding!

    • @JJFX-
      @JJFX- ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@cjeelde Plus that 8GB of RAM on the standard MBP is still "unified" memory shared between the CPU and GPU and it has only 2/3 the bandwidth of the M3 Pro so in reality it's even worse than it seems. They also limit capacity depending on what CPU you get and don't make it clear how many memory channels each chip variant has.

    • @cjeelde
      @cjeelde ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Exactly! But you forget this: that unified RAM is also for the SSD controller! That M chip got a built in SSD controller.
      I'm honestly impressed by how good 8 GB RAM is for Macs with M chips but it's def not a Pro feature with that little. 8 GB is good for average people that don't use Pro apps for their living.
      MBP14 M3 should start with 16 GB RAM. Same thing with that old MBP13 TouchBar M1/M2.
      It's mainly a branding problem. The problem is not the hardware itself.

    • @maythesciencebewithyou
      @maythesciencebewithyou ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sure adding just another 8 gigs of RAM would cost them just 20 bucks, which some might see as an accounting error for such an expensive device, but it's not about that. It's about selling those 8 gigs extra for over 100 bucks. This has been the most profitable business model they came up with. Charging hundreds of dollars extra just to get some more disc space and RAM. And that's the reason it isn't just an accounting error for them. It's their money maker business model.

      I think as Apple see it: for normal everyday usage (internet, movies, music) you buy laptop with 8GB and thats enough. You really dont need more. If you want to do something more with your PC, then Apple thinks you should buy Mac studio which is built better for more demanding usage. I have no problem with this.
      What I really dont like is the fact that difference between 32GB and 64GB is like 20USD, same goes for NVMe SSD, they are super cheap even 1TB which is kinda standart this day. But Apple is charging insane amount of money for it. You are paying 600USD for 64GB and 1TB SSD and for that price you can buy 96GB ram with fastest 2TB NVMe SSD on the market or you can go with middle budget version and buy 64GB and 1TB and save 300USD.
      And those basic capacities aint free so 600USD is only difference not price for those components. So price for 64GB RAM and 1TB SSD in Apple PCs is about 800/900USD. Which is totally insane ! That cost way more than fastest consumer CPU.

Even if the upgrade was not that much of an improvement in his opinion, it still functioned better than the previous iteration. Plus not all programs are going to be optimized specifically for this hardware skew, bump ups in hardware can remedy slowdown in software. Plus the issue is not that laptops have 8gb skews, it's that apple is pushing false information in their marketing. Plus in my personal experience, 8gb hasn't been enough for me since 2014, and it's not gonna be enough for me now, if I'm do to any task requiring heavy use of hardware.
      Nvidia pulled the same Crap with the 3060ti, stating that it had faster ram than the original 3060, but the 3060 still outperformed the 3060ti in tasks requiring the use of onboard memory. Even the 4060 with its "faster" vram, only outperforms the 3060 in significant margins in DLSS performance.

      If you put in an SSD from 2013, sure. But a modern SSD has 10,000+ write cycles before it dies, and SSD drive controllers make sure to spread the pain across the entire drive instead of letting it mindlessly use the same sectors over and over. (when SSDs were first being put in as primary drives, they had less than 1000 write cycles, use those for swap and your machine runs fast... until the SSD dies less than a year later). I used SSD for swap back when it was a very expensive idea -- 2006. Those ones had 300-ish write cycles and could be used for a few months and wouldn't be put in as someone's primary HD for that reason.

    Reviewers have been saying that low end computers are only suited for surfing the internet for 20 years. The trouble with that argument is the fact that the first time I heard the argument was for Pentium 4 PCs with only 0.5 Gb of RAM. Are modern entry level computers still only capable of surfing the internet? If it is true that Macs really need 16 Gb of RAM and a 512 Gb SSD then why are Apple deliberately lowering the performance of their entry level Macs to Pentium 4 levels by not charging the cost price of around £50 for the correct amount of RAM and flash memory?

      @@antred11 It's a pretty subtle difference. With shared memory, the gpu and cpu share the same physical memory, but they don't mess with each either's segments. In the case of unified memory, the cpu and gpu can both access all of the memory. This means, for example, if I load a texture into memory, I don't need to load it twice (once for the cpu and once for the gpu), I can instead just load it into memory once, and both the cpu and gpu can access it. How well does this work in practice? I don't know. But that's the idea

      RAM isn't always everything but it is the least expensive component so them still doing 8GB models on something you can't upgrade is really cheap especially since these are supposed to be ultra premium machines. Also, there's such a thing as swap file so if you have an ultra fast SSD (like most premium, modern machines) you won't actually notice the lack of ram but your SSD has limited writes which will wear out pretty quickly if you continually run it like a machine that's supposed to have 16GB RAM.

    I mean 8GB of RAM definitely IS enough for daily tasks such as browsing the web and do some light video editing etc.
    Even on a pc. And you only really notice a difference as soon as you run out of RAM, because even the fastest SSDs fall behind RAM greatly, also wearing out the poor drive and a busy system drive will also slow down file transfers, opening apps and files etc. so definitely a thing to avoid.
    But apple´s claim is still hilarious and absolutely unacceptable for 2024.
    Try developing games, compile source code or anything like that on 8GB of RAM, it will quickly become a pain in the arse.
    I manage to run out of RAM, even when running linux, with 32GB of RAM.
    So i set up a 32GB swap partition to prevent the compiler and backround apps from crashing.
    Since i´ve got a separate SSD for linux, because my pc is f***ing user upgradeable, i have windows and important files on another one.
    So SSD wear isn´t a concern of mine.
    On a Macbook, a failed SSD means your whole laptop is f***ed.

      these SSD's are not comparable to others, they last easily the lifetime of a mac which is about 15 years, it wont die for sure
      soldered is far better, having people access the device is terrible practice, ruins the second hand market, which for windows people is something they don't even consider.
      thats why apple is always cheaper, way cheaper even@@doctahjonez

      Agreed but at the same time the kinds of users which will buy an 8 or 16gb ram laptop in 2024 will never ever write enough data to the ssd to kill it. I am a filmmaker which writes massive files regularly and I still have yet to see a single ssd die, some of mine are 8 years old.

    mba 2020 with 8gb of ram for 999 was quite a good deal actually as it was enough for most people in that market. What I dont think is acceltable is shipping a “Pro” laptops basr model as 8GB

    I had the base model M1 MacBook Air. I kept getting low memory alarms. I upgraded to 16/512. I still got low memory alarms. I bought the Air because my camera bag is sized for it.
    I'm currently on a Lenovo ThinkPad, running Windows 11. I pop into Linux occasionally. Unfortunately, I can't get images to print properly in Linux (a photo doesn't really exist until it's been printed, IMHO). The same files that print beautifully on Windows or Mac come out fuzzy, color-shifted messes on Linux. That's really what keeps me from going full Linux.

    I bought an M1 Mac Mini in February 2021 after my heavily-upgraded 2008 Mac Pro died, and I was very happy with it - it's smooth, stable and very fast, and even handled complex games pretty well. However, I bought an M1 Max Mac Studio in August 2023. It's an outstanding upgrade, and overkill for my needs as a writer, editor and moderate gamer.
    My M1 Mini with 8 GB of unified memory engaged in near-constant swap memory activity, which isn't good for the lifespan of the SSD, but with 32 GB, my Mac Studio never carries out swap activity and has more memory than I'll ever need.
    By the way, I had a great time playing Resident Evil Village on my Mac Studio for Halloween last year, and I look forward to playing Death Stranding in a couple of days. :D

    im using an HP EliteBook 840 G5
    i5-7300U
    16GB DDR4 RAM
    256 M.2 SSD
    it's light, has decent battery life, and only needs a tiny 30W Type-C charger.
    it's built very well, all metal, display is bright and sharp, no complaints really.
    i know a 7th Gen U-series i5 might not sound like much in 2024 (and it's not lol), but i only do web browsing, watching videos, and word processing, and it never really lags or crashes or anything.
    planning on upgrading soon, eyeing up an XPS 13 but i still can't bring myself to make the purchase since i got my HP for about $180 (here in Egypt) and it's still serving me well.
