We're pleased to announce that next month's theme will be BOMBS, for July will mark 70 years since the first atom bomb exploded in a New Mexico test. Look out for the teaser on our channel next week.
Another version of the jet pack was developed a few years ago and while it worked perfectly indoors it was highly susceptible to wind currents and they tended to try to fly close to the ground because there was no safety mechanism for the flyer if the engine cut out at 200 feet. So it looked good, but was not practical.
We take a look at 8 incredible transport inventions from the past. Would you fancy taking any of these to work? th-cam.com/video/KOVwc8_PSZ0/w-d-xo.html
The problem with the jetpack is endurance. The fuel runs out in less than two minutes. Carrying enough fuel for practical flight times would make it too heavy for a person to use. Unless they solve that problem, it will remain just an interesting gimmick used in movies and publicity stunts.
Dress code for piloting experimental contraptions back in the day: Jacket and tie with an optional hat. These days: Spandex, boots and helmet. Beard and tattoos an absolute must.
Yeah, research! Most of these vehicles are still around in one shape or another, Dynosheres are still made, the Zepplin is set to make a comeback, hover bikes are still being tested and improved etc etc... Land yatchs do exist and there is a sport based on it!!!!!!
I'm an airship fan and when I heard they were looking to make a comeback, I got quite excited. They are a very green way to transport goods and people around the world.... As well as being ideal centres for medical aid in difficult parts of the world. Imagine transporting a hospital facility and not needing a airport and can take aid straight to the people that need it!
It is always interesting to think of people's misguided thoughts on how to use a new invention. For instance, The telephone was first viewed as a "voice telegraph," and "idle chatter" was discouraged since they thought of it as a business-only device. Other odd ideas included using Television during World War II to guide bombs or (in the US) thinking of a 1939 RCA "home fax machine" where the user would set it to receive a newspaper facsimile from midnight to 6am. [They forgot to consider that it was a lot cheaper to have a normal newspaper delivered rather paying hundreds of dollars for a machine to give you a poor copy. And let us not forget that "someday, everyone will have a helicopter in their driveway." [I sure would hate to live in LA or London if that were so -- crash, the traffic!!] Just look in old copies of Popular Science or Popular Mechanix to see how we saw the future....
Imagine pulling up to your destination in your new monowheel. You apply the breaks, but instead of stopping you just keep rolling because your basically a run-away tire.
Given how garbage most drivers are these days I wouldn't trust someone flying over my head. Plus if there's a malfunction you're instantly either dead or crippled being a burden on your family for the rest of your life causing your wife to cheat on you, then she gets the house and kids and you have to pay morgage and child support leading you to a life of drug addiction and eventually suicide.
The jet pack no longer "exists" because that would be too much mobility for civilians. You could easily infiltrate restricted areas such as a country's borders, prison fences / walls, etc.

They had imaginations back then. They also knew a whole lot less and that made them more experimental, which is how so many past inventions were discovered accidentally. Most tragic thing about modern times is the message young people get. "Everything is done, there's nothing left for you to do, learn to code or go sit in the corner." If you have an idea for an invention you follow it through because those big companies that think they know it all, they're terrified of you.
Jetpacks are still around but what makes them impractical is that they only carry about a minute of fuel. A recent variation is essentially a large firehose taking the place of the jetpack with unlimited water thrusting the person into the air over a lake or ocean
"Hoverscooter" - The original Princeton X-2 "Airscooter" exists and is on display at the American Helicopter Museum in West Chester PA, USA. The other Scooter shown flying over a field was last in the ownership of The Smithsonian Institute. It's current status is unknown.
Well first of all. On nr 4: "OF COURSE!" is what I would turn around and say if I rode a flying platform. Secondly. On the last entry: The Jet-Man rig is probably the closest thing we will ever get to a real Rocketeer-rig. Look it up on youtube and see the most awesome personal flying device I have ever witnessed. And I suspect that DARPA already has a prototype working with both mounted weapons and ground-take-off capabilities for under-the radar insertions and extractions. And lastly: I want both the dynasphere's and zeppelins to come back as normal transportation devices.
Thank goodness for _Grand Theft Auto; San Andreas_ because it's the closest I'll ever get to flying a jetpack. With regard to flying cars, a modified four propped drone should take care of that, surely?
The actual reason that jet packs were abandoned as viable is that they could only carry enough fuel for a flight of 2-3 minutes. The reasons given here for abandonment are totally fallacious. Land yachting is still a thriving sport and pastime. Airships are making a big comeback and I have to admit that the description does make this point about many of these items.
