    Thanks to everyone for your suggestions for next month's theme! We've read and considered every single one. Some we've pencilled in for future months, others we just don't have the footage for, sadly. Announcement of the new theme to follow. All best, BP.

      We're pleased to announce that next month's theme will be BOMBS, for July will mark 70 years since the first atom bomb exploded in a New Mexico test. Look out for the teaser on our channel next week.

    I love how they play Can-Can to show how chaotic the history of invention is

    Has you going up and down a bit, from jolly and record breaking good-times to LEMANS DISASTER, 79 DEAD, FAMILIES RUINED! wha? oh uh, well look planes and now waterspeed records, ALSO DEAD, CRASH, HERE'S FOOTAGE AND HIS LAST WORDS!
    Incredible and haunting isn't the half of it.

    Could you do a theme on inventions that never made it? Ones where they really hype them up as the future, but ended up failing miserably.

    Sadly it took such horrific disasters as at LeMans to bring about improvements in safety for spectators and drivers. The drivers had balls of case-hardened steel for sure.
    The wreckage of Bluebird K7 and Donald Campbell's body were recovered from Coniston Water in 2001.

    The Le Mans Disaster killed 83 people and the driver, which caused Mercedes-Benz to exit the racing scene for about 35 years.

    What are the parameters for land speed records? Does the thing have to be considered a vehicle? because the rocket sled did carry a man, but did the man have to actually control any part of the sled? I mean, it was on a track, so it couldn't go anywhere else, it needed no control from a pilot . . . what's the difference between an unmanned rocket they send flying parallel to the ground that could go 1,000 m.p.h. and a rocket with a seat for someone to passively sit in while it goes 600 m.p.h. parallel to the ground?

    Hello,
    You seem to have confused Kilometers and Miles several times in the video, particularly the can-can intertitles.
    Other than that, great montage!

    I'm watching some of your videos and they're great!!! Thanks a lot for them, have made me enjoy this afternoon! :) Could you tell me the name of the "march" song at 0:07? It fits so much to your old footage and love it. Where i live in Catalonia there is an abbandoned race track with inclinated corners to almost vertical, its one of the oldest racetracks in Europe, its a pitty that its private and the owners don't really love cars and don't want to do nothing with the track which is getting in worse shape everyday, there are videos from Hispano Suiza cars racing there, amazing... The track is called "Autodromo de Terramar", in Sitges, near Barcelona, i guess back in the day some records must maybe had place in there.

    Is that Levegh's body?!

    • @simonkevnorris
      @simonkevnorris 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought the body on the track was a woman's body. I presume Levegh was launched into the crowd along with the car. My understanding of the accident is that Mike Hawthorne in a Jaguar pitted at the last moment and caused another car (an Austin Healey(?)) to swerve into Levegh's path. Levegh's car launched off that into the crowd.
      In any open wheeler formula race it's still possible for an accident to resemble an aircraft accident - it just takes the wheels to interlock and touch. The cars have improved safety a lot as do the tracks but there is only so far you can go. Look at the Mercedes accidents at Le Mans a number of years ago where Mark Webber and then Paul Dumbreck's cars launched themselves into the air because the front end of the car wasn't working properly.
