  • Alvin Langdon Coburn was one of the major figures in the early Pictorialist movement in photography. Born in 1882 in Boston, Coburn and his mother moved to England where his cousin, F. Holland Day helped bring him to the larger stage of the Royal Photographic Society.
Coburn began a long and extremely diverse career over many photographic mediums (abstract, portrait, landscape and Autochrome) and as many styles. He was very well known in his time and contributed much to the advancement of photography as a member of the Linked Ring.

Ted you have done an amazing service to the history of photography. I can't imagine how many hours you spent gathering the fabulous and intimate information on each photographer. It is clearly a passion for you and I am infinitely grateful to have access to the beautiful collection of videos you have created. It has changed everything about my approach to photography. Thank you, Deborah Savoie

Ted, late to the party but glad I cam across this TH-cam video on Alvin Langdon Coburn, thank you for the time and energy you have put into these videos I find them inspirational and full of ideas to try. considering we now have access to much more capable equipment there should be no excuse for not producing original images whether to share or for ones own enjoyment and education. You have done / are doing a great service to the Art of Photography keep up the great work. Regards Peter.

The really faded shot of the girl at 3:46 was incredible. It was very mesmerizing and terrifying at the same time. Beautiful.

*"Photography makes one conscious of beauty everywhere, even in the simplest things, even in what is often considered commonplace or ugly. Yet nothing is really 'ordinary', for every fragment of the world is crowned with wonder and mystery, and a great and surprising beauty." ~ Alvin Langdon Coburn*

I love the work of Bart Forbes. Really good stuff. I sort of wish the images were bigger, they deserve that. Ghost Pines are my favourite, I think and I absolutely love the still life paintings. Very good stuff indeed.

He is actually one of the very few I've heard of, a fascinating mam. He got George Bernard Shaw to get naked and pose as "The Thinker", he photographed his wife taken drugs (not blowing up a balloon) he had a relationship/friendship with some unnamed man from some cult or the other from around the time he took British citizenship (which he may or may not have done to upstage Bresson who frequently declared his love for all things English) until he died and took some of the most amazing photographs ever that are totally timeless. Thank you for these, without you many of us (me most of all) would be totally ignorant of the vast majority of the people you introduce us to.

Thanks for poking around in the attic of photography - very interesting - by the way finally got my Canon f0.95 50mm lens mounted - now the master of swirly colors.

Excellent videos lately Ted, keep it up. I'd like to suggest checking out or talking about Lillian Bassman. In my opinion she was one of the greatest fashion/fine art photographers ever. Her high contrast style is so distinctive and I love the way she mastered the darkroom to make her images stand out.

His portraits are really good and it's also nice to see that the abstract photography was already there when Moholy-Nagy started his work. When it comes to landscapes and documentation there are many photographers from the same era who were much better than Coburn. You should check out Signe Brander, her work is absolutely magnificent.

Well done, Ted. Getting better and looking more professional all the time. Love your father's work! You may want to look at the glare on your glasses; kind of distracting as it is reflecting something green. Thanks!

Regarding the votoscope - when I was working as a prop boy for a TV stations - they used to lead into one of the programs by shooting a mirrored ball that was revolving along a V shaped device lined with mirrors - might have been something like that.

Those mirrors that he used to make these abstract pictures, what is it call? was it made for photography?

Tommy Plouffe It was called a vortoscope. Ezra Pound claims to have been the inventor and Coburn used it for photography. Seems to be a bit of a mystery as to what it actually looked like. I don't know whether they kept it a secret or it was just never documented.
