    People who think that the second record is boring, well...they're missing out. Beautiful songs on it ("the lamia", "in the rapids" and the great finale "it"...).

    No one I know of disowns The Lamb, including the artists, it is an iconic piece of work. It is very nice to hear the guys talking about it

    It's so weird to hear most of the band members (excluding PG) cutting the album down?! It is one of the best albums of all time. It amazes me they can disown it.

      I do not receive it as cutting the album down. They do look with come criticism onto their work. I appreciate it.

      They're not cutting it down, but since it was a difficult time for them (unlike the previous albums), that's going to affect their impression of it then as now.

      Yeah, its hard to understand outside if you arent a musician, they all like it in total. But other than a few tracks its just an ambitiuos album they did as young kids and so like most of the material they did in those early years, they moved on to things much better. I doubt you find a musician that feels they did their best stuff by the time they were 24.

    • @OllieKubrick1
      @OllieKubrick1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@evankeal Funny cuz I feel its usually the opposite. Most of the best work is done when artists are young and are hungry. This is definitely true with Genesis. The Lamb is their magnum opus. Gabriel did great solo stuff after he left (was pushed out) and Collins direction w reformed Genesis is commercial and ok (what he did w Brand X and solo was better than his version of Genesis but never achieved the depth or creative spirit of the original formation - Look at a band like Pink Floyd after Dark Side - that was their pinnacle and you can hear it and see it in the Pompeii film). Some artists get better with time but they are the exceptions (Id argue Johnny Cash is one - his last album was his best). Most artists tend to rest on their laurels or run out of ideas or believe the hype around themselves and their work suffers. Its hard to mantain integrity in a commercial world - cudos to those who do. Sadly this isnt true of Genesis.

    • @OllieKubrick1

      @@gurgisjones1120 This just proves to me that the best work is born out of struggle - when they gave up that fight their work suffered. Maybe they cant see/hear it, but I can.

    I saw this whole album performed live. Brilliant concert, brilliant album. Ground breaking. It's a pity the band didn't quite see it that way

    I wish Tony could listen to the album not having been a part of it. It's a shame he doesn't fully appreciate the work as a whole. All 4 sides create such incredible imagery with a +1 to all 5 of them and their performances. There were so many experimental pieces and it sort of pushed them to a new level of all the media forms: lyrically, musically, requiring imagination of the listener, and visually while on stage during the tour. To me, this is a timeless series of musical construct that are just as powerful to me today as they were 25+ years ago.
    Cheers

    • @GuitarBassCigar
      @GuitarBassCigar 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tony's ego doesn't seem to allow room for the imagination of others. He realizes later that things seem to work out, but still says things like "shit, he's singing over my bit". Its a band effort, not the band tagging along with the "lead keyboardist".
      He also has sour grapes since all of his solo work sunk faster than a brick.
      I will reiterate that I love his work and he is a fantastic keyboard player but he is just one voice in the choir.
      I get vocal about it because I've loved listening to "proper Genesis" for 30+ years.

    It's something I've heard and read a few times. I got into the full album right away, on first listen. In the great 70s album tradition, each track is important and I don't think it's too long.By the way, I have a friend who saw 3 shows on the Lamb tour, in France. He was part of the organizers of the show in Reims. How lucky he is. I wasn't even born then.

    I think honestly the best way to look at Genesis is as three bands, that happened to share some of the same guys throughout them. That being said, I very much started out as a fan of the Gabriel era, and thought the first couple of post-Gabriel era albums were good, and represented a middle period, but thought that once Hackett had left, it was all crap. As I've got older, I now appreciate a great deal more the later era. Lamb still rocks though, probably the best prog rock album of the era.

  • @mightymartianca
    @mightymartianca 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @pmfith All the members, even Gabriel, have expressed dissatisfaction with the stage show. I don't think I've ever actually heard any of them say they didn't like the album, but all of them, not just Collins, thought the live show was largely a failure. Actually the most critical comments I've ever seen came from Rutherford, and I get the feeling that he was the most fed up with the direction the band was going, and it was from him that the march towards the later era came.

    @OllieKubrick1 It IS puzzling to hear them always knocking this LP. This thing was a crazy masterpiece! Tony didn't like the lyrics to 'Lamia'... he's nuts! Beautiful imagery to match the beautiful music... and it tells a nice concise story to boot! What's his problem?

    Indeed. It was really good to hear this. It's not exactly like it was easy to get something this odd and complex to make money and a comfortable life for anyone. I'm surprised no one died or went completely mad. It happened to Pink Floyd. It could have easily been alot worse here.

    I think the reason for the negativity from the band is because there was so much bad feeling surrounding them when recording the album. I can't fault the first half of The Lamb, - but apart from a couple of exceptions (Lilywhite Lillith, The Lamia and Slippermen) I don't like the second half that much. I don't understand why The Lamb in its entirety is put on a pedestal when such albums like Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England, Trick and Wind are just as good.

    Well I believe I had it all wrong I thought Phil was a major part in Peter's leaving. I see him in a totally different light, what I will maintain is...GENESIS were poorer for the loss of Mr Gabriel

    its strange, i grew up really detesting genesis and their ilk, but... the lamb really is something else, some of the playing is truly brilliant, fly on a windshield for example, and as much as collins' music sucks, just listen to how good his drumming is - the beauty of the music is staggering; it really is an album which challenged what i thought i knew about music, a lot of punk ethos died in my brain listening to the lamia!

    Too many Gabrielites on here. Genesis is NOT two opposite camps, as you would love them to look like.
    Try and respect other people's opinions and tastes, 'cos otherwise I could bring here such a mass of GENESIS FANS REGARDLESS OF WHO WAS IN THE BAND, and they'd all tell you and is THE HEART of Genesis. That's what the average Genesis fan thinks, I'm sorry for you 'comrades in Gabriel's army' (he'd hate it!)

    • @220773
      @220773 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Chris Zanotti Okay, as always, no possible discussion on the band we all love.
      It's always political stuff, people fighting each other divided into factions, such STUPID STUFF.
      How can you really think 'Phil and Tony are just bitter'??? Do you know them personally?
      I wouldn't dare say anything about Peter or Steve or Mike, they're Genesis to me anyway, it's the music I get from them, it's not their private lives!!! For FUCK'S sake, I can't believe people can get to this...
      Well, bitter or sweet, Tony will always be THE MASTER to me, it's the music, not the man.

    • @220773
      @220773 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Chris Zanotti Of course I watched those docs as well, never heard Tony use any f. word, and by the way I agree on how the band carried on: Steve Hackett wanted the band to pick songs up 'proportionally' to each member, the band had always picked up the better songs (by consensus WITHIN the band) NO MATTER who had written them.
      Steve wanted to turn Genesis into a 'democratic process' while music can't be 'democratic', it has to be perfectionistic.
      Who on earth thrashed Peter in that doc??? Did youy listen to how both Peter and Tony speak of their break-up? They were best friends within the band, they had a bit of a quarrel during the making up of 'The Lamb', which led EACH OTHER to think it was time to part company.
      Where's all this thrashing?
      Then you talk about Phil: he remained THE ONLY MEMBER OF GENESIS who kept in touch with Peter (also appearing live with him at times and playing on his records) and Phil was the last man who saw Steve as a member of Genesis, when he drove him to the mixing room for 'Seconds Out' and Steve HIMSELF told Phil to leave him roundabout Holland Park without any detailed reason: he'd just chosen to leave the band........................
      So who's thrashing who???
      I argue we're always around the same old stuff: too many people think Genesis were over after Gabriel's and Hackett's departure, too many people can't stand the views of those who think Genesis got even better after Gabriel's leaving. I've been insulted all over Genesis' many forums because of this, it's like swearing against God for these people, I've been told 'shut up, you just CANNOT say that' too many times and I'm FUCKIN' tired.
      Aye, I did use the f. word. Sometimes it's appropriate.

  • @pmfith
    @pmfith 12 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Sorry - but I can't handle Phil's attitude. He looks back on all this with contempt, but people were trying to break new ground. Maybe Peter's costumes got in the way, but he was trying to push the envelope - something Phil wouldn't understand. For a great example of an excellent drummer who never sold out and always tried to expand his horizons instead of taking the easy road of pop garbage - see Bill Bruford.
