    This makes so much sense in retrospect. I love lineart, before I was a digital artist, I studied lineart thoroughly and even can use a g pen really well. And so I've started EVERYTHING with lineart. But it left me not wanting to color at all after.

    This video actually resonated with my brain super well. Normally I struggle with internalizing art advice given through videos because of how it feels like there's too much information to keep track of, but you've presented this in such a clean, simple way that makes me feel more confident about trying it out! And funny enough, mentioning how doing an original sketch can take all your energy out of coloring is something I've never thought about before and makes SO much sense. On top of that, you've literally provided pictures for people to practice with, that's such an incredibly cool thing for you to do! Very excited to view more from you!

    This is a great video! I do disagree on some of your main ideas though, i personally think that the point of a color study should not be to perfectly replicate the colors from an image. This only really is going to help you if you are going into hyperrealism of some sorts. With studies your goal shouldnt be to replicate an image, it should be to learn from an image so you can apply these ideas in your other work. With color studies i personally found i began to learn a lot more once i started to focus on color feel above color accuracy, not having perfect colors also will help with your intuition for color. Color feel is focussing on how a color FEELS, for example if you color pick any picture you can see a lot of colors fall into more of a grey area, but in this type of study it helps to try to exaggerate these into what you feel the colors are, instead of what they really are.
    I honestly think checking colors at all even if its at the end is a bit of a harmful idea, because it makes you lean more into getting the colors "right" instead of actually letting yourself focus on figuring out what makes an image pleasing to the eyes. Say youre thinking of a plein air painter who is going out to paint a tree, what makes this plein air painter a great painter isn't his ability to perfectly replicate the hue and saturation of what he sees in front of him, but his understanding of the color harmony that makes the complete image.
    You mention color relativity when you talk about why you check colors as you go, I think making mistakes in such a situation can actually be a really good way to learn, because it makes you think of how to still make the full image work with different colors, which is a great excercise. I really like how you mention the practicing is more helpful than just studying endless theory because of the way it makes you think, I think this idea applies to this more freeform way of doing color studies as well, because it brings you more questions, like why does this look so weird if i saturate this color, and why cant i make this sky more of a blueish color for example.
    Sorry if this rant is a bit of a mess, it's quite late when im writing this haha. But if i had to summarize everything i'd say focussing on accurately replicating colors might be a waste of time, since the importance of an image is the way these colors work together, not the individual colors. This all is still just my opinion of course, everybody has different goals and ways of learning. It's always great to hear people's approach, keep it up!

    • @vikartstuf
      @vikartstuf  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Yo! Thanks for taking the time to write all that o_o
      im sure this will be useful for a lot of people! When it comes to the more freeform studies and the "feel" of color im 100% on board exept for one small thing.
      Expert artists can exaggerate a pose or a perspective shot to accentuate some aspects of it (intention and feel beyond plain realism) same for artstyles and stylization, and i think that's similar to what you explained.
      To get the most out of this however, a lot of people (me included) believe that it's better to have a "foundation" in realism and know how things work in reality to then bend them and give em our own artistic interpretation with a higher level of expertise.
      Again, loved your comment and would strongly recommend people to try both approaches :)

    This is such good advice, a lot of colour videos are so intimidating even if they appear 'simple'.
    Most people steer clear of tracing but the point you made about energy made me change my viewpoint.
    So many days I've sat down to study something specific but wasted my energy completing elements not even related to my study and end up sleeping after hours of sleepy frustration

    Thank you for this fascinating video. Colours is my No 1 enemy, and I often forget how much studies and technique can be translate from traditional to digital. Copying colours from using eyedrops have drawbacks and won't teach alot things like contrast, value, and can mess up colour harmony.
    I always dreaded in making mistakes but you're right, I'm here to enjoy learning and study art. Not being force upon doing perfect illustration. Satisfaction knowing you can still improve on your next art studies is much better than being stagnant.
    Practicing and making mistakes for studies purposes is a good lesson so in the future, those experiences can be implemented efficiently on the next illustrations.

    Ive been working on this painting of Sam Lake (the leas writer and creative director over at Remedy Entertainment, the face of Max Payne in the first game). I wentin with the clear goal of trying to be loose with my brush strokes, try to guess the colours and values. And going in with this goal-oriented mindset DEF helps.
    I did make the mistake of trying to sketch his face first, and not tracing it. And what you said about "wasting energy and focus" by doing stuff that isnt a focus of the study DEF rings true for me. Thank you for this video :)

    About a year ago I managed to actually keep up with doing a tiny color/light study every day. Working without eyedropping is so important, but I would usually just eyedrop the dominant background color first, get that plain block of color down and then do the whole painting rather than checking each one. Worked pretty well! I learned a ton even though I only kept it up for like two weeks and I still feel like I can see those short two weeks in my digital paintings when I (rarely) attempt them these days!

    This looks like a fun exercise! Thanks a bunch, especially for the pinterest board, that's the stage where I would've gotten distracted and/or procrastinated instead of looking for a reference. For hours. You're saving lives here, man. This train was headed for disaster, at least after it finished inducing headache and confusion in its passengers by going in circles, and you've managed to redirect it. You are the lever-pulling guy from the trolley problem, it is you. The train in this metaphor is me, and so are the passengers, and so are the guys tied to the tracks btw. So is the lever ig, 'cause you sure pulled me out of my usual groove, and it's a good thing. I freaked out a bit at the beginning because I didn't expect one Dirk Strider to involve himself in my art education but who am i to complain, y'know. Sorry if that gets said a lot. 100% agree about the tracing part, I've noticed that exact thing as well when I'm trying to do a study.... going through all of the other steps to get to the actual part I'm trying to study can be time consuming, tedious and takes mental energy that I need for what I'm trying to learn lol. I think as long as you always link to the ref image/credit the source it's okay to trace for a color study. But tracing for serious finished pieces of art is where I draw the line

      maybe to avoid focusing on the details, try working towards them gradually -> big shapes, then medium, then small for last! (keeping the size of your brush big and chunky also helps lol)

    Omg this was actually so good, as someone who has always struggled with color, this really helped me understand why
    The part with the tracing actually had my jaw on the floor because that is exactly my problem, every time I would go try to study color I would waist my energy and motivation on the sketch beforehand and by the time I was ready to color I wanted to give up
    I will absolutely be trying this method, THANK YOU

  • @nolwazi3076
    @nolwazi3076 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    no tracing the lines for the purpose of a colour study is soo valid. I do that all the time tbh. i mean you'll be adding the colours by yourself, you are still taking time to learn and do something by yourself from scratch. tracing just makes getting to that part quicker lol. :>
    anyways... *runs to your pinterest board*

    • @vikartstuf
      @vikartstuf  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    to new artists- remember, you're not ment to be a printer. what's considered good art is poisioned by capitalism and professionalism-
    while this is a wonderful tutorial and has helped me greatly, I first had to learn how to have fun with colors, and brake the rules before following them.
    that way I can handle these challenges with enthusiasm to improve.

    Just personally on the tracing the sketch thing you can also do a crappy/basic sketch. Not intentionally bad but prioritise the basic big shapes and forget tiny details. It's a good way to also study composition in these types of studies especially if you wanna get into environments or you're more a painter in general and you're gonna end up painting over those lines. You might also see a style evolve outta how you choose to simplify a subject. Either way if only colour is your priority tracing or a really loose sketches is A ok

    • @vikartstuf
      @vikartstuf  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      100% agree! as long as there's some kind of reference point it should work 💜 what ure saying is super true and also applies to paintings in general (so not just studies)

  • @MahouKat

    I don’t fully agree on the part about tracing. The drawing/copying part can indeed be a waste of focus time for someone who’s already very good at drawing. But I do think that for someone who’s still learning the basics it is a great way to understand the volumes etc…basically understand what you are drawing. Anyway it was a great video overall, thank you and subscribe!
