  • In this video Wilson and Dad mow first crop grass and alfalfa with Wilson's newly painted New Idea sickle mower! He would have liked to use the Farmall H along with it, but unfortunately the H does not have the hydraulic support he needed, so he instead used the Kubota. We hope you enjoy the video! Thanks for watching!

    When I was really little back in the mid 70's I remember my grandpa running a mounted sicle mower on a Farmall C and my dad following him with a New Idea hay crimper on a Farmall M. Still have the M.

    True story! Almost lost my finger with a sickle bar mower. I was hooking up to it. PTO was off of course. The bar was up in the vertical. I was rocking it back and forth. Trying to get the lift arm on the pin. Had a hold of one of those guard points. The mower was sitting on something that shifted! My finger slide too far back. That jolt some how made the blade move too! 😲 That quick jolt. Moved my hand and finger too far back!Thank God! It just cut the side of my finger at a angle. Took 4 stiches. Very scary thing!!!! We had a old shed, that had doors on it that we could lock. After that. We kept it in there lock up. In case some kids might play with it. THAT BLADE CAN MOVE UNEXPECTEDLY!!!! Even with the PTO off!!

    Great video! Love sickle bar mowers! Awesome restoration. I love the iconic green and orange of New Idea equipment. I have an old IH #9 Highgear that someone converted from a horse drawn mower to a trail mower. My original plan was to restore it to horse drawn, but I think I’ll look for another horse drawn one, and take the one I have and fix it back up (it’s in rough shape) into a trail mower as a backup. Thanks for sharing!

    You fellows need a medal, sickel mowers are hard work. I use to love them until I used a 489 Haybine which was my brothers. Bought myself a 469 Haybine , only use sickle mower to cut stubble now.

    Cool! I’ve got a sickle just like that one, got it for $150, doesn’t look the best but it cuts the hay! I run mine on a 1942 John Deere B doesn’t have hydraulics so I just use a come along winch.
    Yours looks amazing!

    Wilson, I had one like that years ago. The one I had was equipped with a mechanical lift for the bar that was powered off the PTO.
    Also, you can get breathers that thread into a hose port on the cylinder to convert it to single acting. Nice work, looks great!

      @KeithFinkFamilyFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe the way that works is backwards, for a one-way it would be power down which obviously wouldn't work. But thanks for the info!

      @@KeithFinkFamilyFarm the cylinder shouldn't care which port is pressurized and which is vented. You can try it by hooking the hose for the retract side to the H and take the coupler off the extend hose and run the hose into a bucket. The bucket will catch any oil being pushed out while you retract the cylinder. It'll also let you know if the piston seals are worn out (it will drool while you are pressurizing the retract side).
      I too would like to see you run it behind the H! Happy experimenting!

    We have a sickle mower a New Idea exactly like this one but we use a Minneapolis Moline ZB to pull it. Plenty enough power.

    Wilson, sickle mower they get bound down and it's of most of the time how the grass fall over the blades. It's like what Paul Case Farms rats nest and you need to find a wing nut to secure the sickle mower to the frame.

    When it goes through a haybind the stems are crushed "crimped"... Does that additional step simply allow for packing more into the bales..?

    • @Dereck_Ryan
      @Dereck_Ryan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't make hay, but I believe the crimping allows it to dry down faster.

    • @ernestjoiner3040

      @Urs a reduced dry out period.. that crossed my mind after I left this inquiry.. thank you for clarifying. I'm enjoying learning these details.

    What do you use to condition your hay after you use your sickle bar?

    • @KeithFinkFamilyFarm
      @KeithFinkFamilyFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We just use a New Holland hay rake to put the hay into windrows before we bale it. Plenty of videos on the channel doing that after the haybine

      The IH haynie is still working;just cut another 16 acres yesterday . We just let Wilson enjoy the fruits of his labor by letting him cut down a couple of fields with his restored mower. It also gave him a chance to see how his dad and grandpa used to cut all the hay...
