  • First tow with the Rivian! Here I discuss what it's like towing a medium size camper trailer with the R1T and compare it to my experience towing the same trailer with the Model X.

    Great review, camping in a Rivian totally doable. Glad you picked the dark interior.

    Something to consider would be a weight distribution hitch. They make a massive difference in the handling and control of the trailer. Probably better range too but likely not a night and day difference with an EV. Where I live it’s actually illegal to tow a trailer of that size without one.
    That trailer at 4,500 dry weight is probably more like 6,000 when loaded with water and gear. That puts alot of weight on the hitch which is why you see the truck squat so much. The weight distribution hitch will level that out and give you better control over the trailer.
    Thanks for the info on towing range. Good for those of us considering making a vehicle change but still wanting to get out camping.

      I'll have to check that out. It might be more helpful when towing with our Model X which is rated much lower than the Rivian

    30 amp tt-30 rv plug is 120v rated at 24 amps constant. Was it a NEMA tt-30 plug?

    • @Teslavangelist
      @Teslavangelist  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I have an adapter tt-30 to 14-50 that I've used with Tesla's, too. Sometimes the vehicle thinks it's a 50amp circuit but amps can be lowered in the vehicle

    7:15 nice nugget about Rivian using the regen as much as it can and avoid the trailer brake. Q: I wonder how you apply the trailer brakes manually. A: 8:10 I've had a camper sway before and used the trailer brake manually to get it to straighten out (keep accel at same place). I noticed you are not using any anti-sway devices at all.

    • @Teslavangelist
      @Teslavangelist  ปีที่แล้ว

      The scroll button on the steering wheel applies trailer brakes alone.
      I'm not familiar with anti-sway devices but I believe EVs like this and Tesla's have anti-sway actions in their tow-mode traction control

      @@Teslavangelist Thanks. Yes, I put in "Q: ... A: 8:10" above to show it was answered once I hit that part of your video. --- I did see on the forum the Rivian manual: " The Trailer Sway Control is always on when in Towing Mode."

    Does rivian offer different adapters for their mobile connector the same way tesla does?
    I guess technically I can just use the tesla mobile connector on the rivian with the adapter.

      I think Rivian does offer adaptors, but any should work. The one I used here is generic

    Did anyone give you any fuss about charging your truck at the camp ground? Was it a State Park?

    • @Teslavangelist
      @Teslavangelist  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No, but it wasn't a really hot day where every Rv would be using AC, and it was a mix of tents and RV's. so the campsite's grid wasn't at risk of getting maxed out.
      Yes it was a state park.

    All the other stuff doesn't matter if the range is only 130 miles.

    Backup Tip. place hand at bottome of steering wheel (6:00 oclock) and while backing up trailer will go in the direction of your hand, left or right.
    Other than that I've got nothing..... 😂

    I can drive for right about 700 miles on a tank of gas in my E series van. Just Drove from Cleveland OH to Albany NY on a single tank of gas 😅 and it only took me about 5 minutes to fill up the tank 😎

      And a F150 will pull the trailer in the video for over 300 miles on less than a tank.

    None of these EV truck tow a trailer of weight more than 120 mile on flat ground this make vacationing with a camp trailer a nightmare.. This is why Toytata , Ford and Chevy/Gmc has shelved their EV trucks an will no longer be making them.

    • @Teslavangelist
      @Teslavangelist  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes range is very low towing full loads. Cybertruck w/range extender could be ok. Experience will be better once pull-through chargers are common.
      RAMcharger PHEV could be a great option, roo

      Most campsites have 30 or 50 amp hookups. Charge when you get there. I have over 10 State Parks within a 100 mile radius of my house. This is perfect.

      @@aaronbussey3856 Perfect if you want to double or triple your travel time. Most people prefer not to take two and half days to go 500 miles. Or having to disconnect their trailer to fuel up in your case charge up. Nearly all of the EN truck makes have admitted this was a bad idea.
