The new four-bangers are runnig in germany since this year. The all wheel drive models have a new front axle and there are some mild chassis updates. Anti sway is a lot better. The low gear ratio on the new 9 speed transmission is almost the same as with the selected 4x4 on the older models. The engines are quiter, but it depense if you ordered a insolatet engine compartment. Passenger models have it over here in germany, cargo versions often not. The 9 speed automatic runs in many other mercedes vehicles and is proven. There are some changes in the service set-up as fare as I know, so the first service will get cheaper (?). The new engine is a lot lighter than the 3.0 V6. The USA/Can Versions get a bit more hosepower than the european models. Here in Germany, people do not use the 4x4/AWD not so hard like in North America. Time will tell, if the modern all wheel drive, that works with the abs/brake system holds strong as the former 4x4 system. I drive a 2020 Sprinter-Tourer (2WD) and drove the new ( for you 2023) versions and I noticed not a lot difference in driving and comfort betwen both sprinters. The 9 speed trans. acts a bit more, sometimes a bit nervous, compare to the 7 speed transmission. Over all, the newer set-up is better. A large downpoint with the new 4 Cyl. engines is for me the poor downhill engine brake. It never was good with all 4 bangers in the heavy sprinter chassis, but the new 1,95 Liter are a bit overloaded at engine braking. Don´t get panic, the brakes do a very good job at the 906/907 Sprinters ! Over all, the new sprinters are a bit better work horses and a bit bettter long distance traveler. In Germany and parts of Europe, the Front-Wheel Drive Sprinter is available since 2018. It was the first sprinter with the 9 speed automatic. The FWD Sprinter is the favorite model for many RV Outfitters. The Cargo-Van has about 3,3 inch more interior high and a differnt wheelbase. You see the Superhightop Sprinters often in europe, but I saw only a few in the USA, I wonder why ?. Most German RV Companies choose the FWD Sprinter Cab for their Class-B Plus (Class C) conversions. The 4x4 Class C´s are also very popular. Greets, Matt.
Not if the driver is tall. When the driver’s seat is all the way back, the tiny steering wheel wasn’t engineered to telescope far enough. Test drive a Transit, you maybe disappointed.
We need 9 seater with 4 captain seats in middle why is this so hard to find when it's the only one I've ever seen? When I goto dealerships they're all bench seats
this sucks to here as a Mercedes Benz sprinter technician. the 4cyl turbo diesel engines (651) are a pain to work on. all the new equipment they are adding is only going to make it even worse to work on. they really shouldve just updated the 6cyl diesel engine (642) to make more power and run bio diesel. really sucks from a technician stand point.
What are the consequence on luxury 25 ft class c like tiffin wayfarer or leisure travel van murphy bed? Is this van will come with 3.5 inch more clearance AwD? Will they have reduced or improved cargo capacity and towing? Currently it is 11030 GVWR and 15250 GCWR. An AWD is heavier. Cargo capacity is very important for these c’ass C. We want improvement not reduced capability. Reliability of twin turbo to fit EPA requirements ?
What are the consequence on luxury 25 ft class c like tiffin wayfarer or or winnebago view? What year model would these changes be included? Would this effect the carrying capacity?
@@mattnewman8103 just a glance at some of the pricing and configurations. My local dealer would not share to much. I placed a deposit for a 170 super payload
The RV's chassis is 2 model years behind when the 'new' RV is delivered? That's a huge problem. A 2 year old, zero milage chassis must depreciate significantly.
These are definitely very nice vans, however, I do not look forward to servicing one. There is some negative information on the OM 654 motor. For whatever reason, the Pentastar 3.6 seems more and more appealing.
Do you still have to unplug the purple wire to make all the radio speakers work? Does the cruise control still randomly turn off cause it feels like it? Does the cross wind assist still hammer on the brakes without any warning? Do you have to spend thousands of dollars to make the chassis be more stable as it goes down the road? Does the new engine come with an oil dipstick? Does the MBUX still inaccurately display the speed signs on the Navigation screen and center dash display? Is the Navigation software still crappy? Does the MBUX still randomly blurt out "what can I do for you" while you're having a conversation with other people in the vehicle? I feel that the Sprinters are designed by Mercedes Benz *B team* of designers... and the AMG line gets all the best *A team* of designers. If AMG owners had to put up with a shitty product like a Sprinter, MB would have zero sales. Do you answer anybody's questions on here...?
I smell a bit of a cheat. 50 rear 50 front vs 60 rear 40 front . The Benz is rear wheel drive so you drive up to a bog whole most of the power is pushing you as the front comes out the rear goes in most of the power is still pushing the front and the front is pulling the back. It was done like that for a reason. new 9 speed vs high low 7 speed the 7 has 14 ratios the 9 has 9 . While the 4wd system in the Sprinter isn't the best in the world the new one is a step back and its cheaper to make which is most likely why they have done it.
33/67 power in the old Vans Which is absolutely logical when the back of the Vans are always heavy loaded was the best option. This allowed much better traction in all conditions . Multiple engine malfunction in Europe with the New 2.0 engine related to electronics and „ecology”
It’s a shame that MB doesn’t have a gasoline engine in the Sprinter as they are much easier to crank and be on your way in any temp + no need for “blue fluid” or being forced to take highway trips when driving local too much 🤷🏻♂️
The 2014 sprinter I drove around for years had awful EGR issues. That was a pain in the ass. Not just going bad one time but multiple times. Wondering if the new diesel will eliminate all these issues otherwise I’d stay away from the diesel and get the gas.
I think the new AWD (4matic essentially) should be just as capable, even lacking low range (if 1.42/:1 can actually be considered low range 😅). The t-cases on previous Sprinter 4x4 have been problematic (I can attest to this issue) so this change might be a good thing. And anything a new AWD Sprinter can't handle isn't somewhere you should be driving it in the 1st place 😜 The one concern (as stated by several German offroad specialists who have tested it) is the longevity of the torque converter, which heats up a lot under offroad use. I guess we shall find out... With the new 2L 4cycl , the major downside is lack of engine braking, as well as engine longevity (smaller engine, higher compression, twin turbo...). I have the previous 4cyl (2.2L, OM651) and engine braking is inexistent. I also worry about longevity since it's fully outfitted as a campervan and this, pretty heavy but... Time will tell.
EPA regulations will destroy the RV class C and B market and class A as well. In US and Canada i don’t see big class C and A working only with batteries. Soon a 1 cyl class C sprinter that can tow 500lbs with cargo capacity for only one person and no stuff…foolish countries..
America is not Europe. I am not looking to drive my under-powered 4 cylinder Sprinter to an RV park adjacent to a pub in a British town the size of a whale nipple so I can have a cucumber sandwich in the rain while talking about my new tea cozy. I expect to take it on 3k+ mile journeys into the unknown, have it climb the grape vine at 70+ mph with passing power to spare when loaded, digest fire roads with aplomb, carry me securely to camp by the beach or on a remote mountain tops, meander through sketchy trails in inclement weather with a large enough tank to deliver an honest 500 miles of range - to start. In my eyes this is an downgrade to an already sub par solution. What was a crappy low range transfer case is now an even crappier AWD system except with one less gear than the Transit. The Ford Transit dropped the ball by not offering a model with the F150 drive train which would have included low range with locking center and rear diffs - you have to go the aftermarket route for that. The Sprinter 4 and 6 cylinder power plants were already under-powered for the American highway systems when hauling a fully built version and sticking to the finicky diesel is a bad call. At least the Transit has the biturbo 3.5 which is miles ahead of these weak sauce Merc engines. Mercedes, what the heck? Both Mercedes and Ford are capitalizing on this van fad and just looking to up their margins with every new generation. For the price of a base Ford Raptor you can have an empty Cargo van with AWD and a 4 cylinder diesel - thanks! I don't need an Amazon delivery van - I need a capable, overpowered G-Wagen van, not a glorified Walmart parking lot queen.

These vans are borderline lemons. Just like the rest of the sprinters. I have the v6 and Mercedes’ won’t help me repair it. Had no problem charging me $1500 to diagnose it incorrectly. I had to take my sprinter to a local shop and they fixed it in two hours for free and told me that Mercedes’ doesn’t like fixing them. Just buy a new box van every time a tone ring gets dirty!!

Problem with AWD is it only works when wheel starts to slip, then off.

I see the b-box in the background being laid out for a bike garage. I'd love to see a feature on this once the build out is done.

One hope I have is that Mercedes will bring back the High Roof option, which made for great above-cabinet storage as well as a more open feel.

Well done gentlemen !
4wd is always much better off road than AWD. AWD is fine in snow on paved roads.
For sure. If MB is doing away with 4X4, you might as well get a Transit and save 10K. Plus the Transit comes with the EcoBoost.
Quattro would like to have a word
Irrespective of what you say, Sprinter have killed it for the RV industry. I think it was time, Ford was introduced. They have a specific trim for it.
Losing 4x4 lo, bad. Gaining AWD & 2 more gears, good. B20 compliant, best.
