Interesting video First of all, I would like to note 2 things : 1.the Sprinter is not an off-roader, but a rough road vehicle and 2. the biggest source of error is not the van, but the driver If you want an all-wheel drive Sprinter, you should know exactly its strengths and weaknesses - because, as I said, it is a rough road vehicle. As standard, the Sprinter copes very well with lighter terrain and is one of the best in the van class with the VW Bulli. But I wanted something more. So I bought a 3 liter Sprinter with 190 hp from 2018. I immediately took him to a special workshop that specialized in such conversions.5 months later and 57k Euro poorer I was finally able to pick him up. Now I learned to master the Sprinter off-road. For this purpose, I took part in courses that offered special driver training. And then last summer I finally went on the big trip.First I went to Morocco and the Sahara.Then to Iceland,and for 4 months I have been hanging around in Scandinavia north of the Arctic Circle. My conclusion: make meaningful changes to the Sprinter, and get to know it to the last weld - then you have a lot of fun with it.
Love my locker too. It was very helpful in Alaska last summer. Off to Colorado this summer. Someday, big brakes! For everyone with RIP kit, do check torque specs on leaf spring U brackets; one of mine rotated out this summer and Alaska mechanics were loathe to work on them.
Yeah the lockers have been great for us! Glad to hear your is working out well! We recommend to re-torque the U bolts after the first 500-1000 miles! and you will LOVE the Big Brakes!

This AWD system is 50/50 torque split and automatic vs the prior 30/70 frt/rear torque split and it is really an AWD system with a non locking center differential that is manually engaged. Its was an AWD with a low range and only 30% torque to the front.
Question about the traction control. In the awd, when you were going up that washout, stuck. Was the esp on or off? A mercedes video a few months ago showed the awd with esp off getting stuck super easy. Then with the esp ON, the brakes held the wheel without traction and it over came the obstacle. Just curious as to how effective the esp is in the awd off road. We purchased a 2023 awd a few months ago and excited to get it out on the trails. Thanks guys!
Great question! So we ran multiple scenarios up and down those washouts. What we found is that if you on a flat dirt trail. ESP off it drives fine. Now when it came to the washout section or quite honestly any section that had an incline. We tried Locker off / ESP off ... it got stuck. We tried Locker off / ESP on... it still was getting stuck. But as you can see in the video. As soon as we engaged the Locker. Any ruts or sections we were stuck in, the van got out... EASILY.

I have the 4x4 sprinter and am looking into the locker. I hear the locker works great when in 2wd. Does it work the same or better when in 4HI and 4Lo? Also, is there a brake traction control feature so left foot braking in 4Hi would be effective in preventing wheel spin to maintain traction.
16-18 mpg! To answer your other questions... The interior of the 2023 is the same so you can get anywhere from 5-35+ gallons of water! That's really up to you and how much you want for your build! In regards to the fuel tank! The largest tank we off is the S&B 45-Gallon tank! That is the biggest tank offered for the 2023 so far! Hope this helps!

The Revel is heavier because it is fully built out. But it also has roughly 660 mile range with our ACGB tank installed! The AWD is getting 16-18mpg with a 45 gallon tank!
I inquired about ordering an AWD 2023 diesel Sprinter Crew but was told all allocations have been sold out. Im currently on the list for a 2024. I plan on tackling the Mojave Trail and spending a few night off-road with it. The new AWD system and revised transmission appear to be improvements for the Sprinter.
Doesn’t the ESP do something similar to the locker? Not as well I’m sure, but effectively limiting a spinning wheel and transferring power to the tire w traction…?
@@Agileoffroad in the clips from the video it didn’t look like the traction control was was turned on. The brakes didn’t seem to be applying on any of the spinning wheels. I do appreciate the video was just snippets of the various things you were trying and not the whole picture. A locking rear diff is definitely a great upgrade for vehicles exposed to low traction on a regular basis. It’s interesting that VW offer a locking diff as a factory option on its 4Motion AWD vans.
The locker is installed in the rear differential and when engaged locks both the left and right rear axles so they turn in unison. This prevents total loss of traction if one wheel is off the ground or on ice/mud. The ARB locker is actuated via compressed air, which moves the locking gears into position, so it requires an onboard air compressor. Agile requires a $2500 deposit to install the ARB locker; I've read the final cost is in the $4000-4500 range.
@@Agileoffroad within the reasonable future I hope. With having the awd on 32” already, I absolutely notice the torque lacking a bit. As I want to upgrade to 35” (who doesn’t), re-gearing to something in the proximity of a 4.727 ratio (MB option AR5 in the Oberaigner era) becomes a necessity. So me being friendly, get it done!! 😉

From our testing it did great! Our RIP Kit is definitely going to help with the swaying. The leaf springs play a huge factor in that! And of course John and Jesus are experienced off-road drivers and know what they're doing behind the wheel. Our advice would be firstly, drive at the experience level you feel comfortable and safe at! and Secondly, definitely get a RIP Kit 🙂
I had issue with my 2023 awd front driveshaft mercedes came to the same conclusion with 10 cent snap ring = new front differential and driveshaft all under warranty funny thing is i wasn't doing anything cool i was driving down interstate lol

What about Icy/slick/snow conditions? Do you just wait for your AWD to turn on? What if you're already slipping where a 4WD or AWD vehicle would have grip to all 4 tires?
Paul keep in mind the 2023 is AWD so it requires no shifting. We compared our 4x4 Revel, which does require shifting! Like Pez Racer said, the AWD system is always on!
I understand the AWD is always on, but does that mean all 4 wheels are always under power? Or. Only the rear tires are powered, until the van senses the front tires slipping, then the transfer case engages power to the front tires as well
If it’s the second scenario, then what is the lag time before the front tires are engaged and powered? Wouldn’t you already be slipping by the time you have power to the front? How long does it stay engaged before disengaging again?

A bit off-topic, But does anyone know if these new Sprinter engines are B20-fuel compliant? The past V6 Sprinter was limited to a maximum B5 diesel fuel (Anything beyond B5 can only be used in an emergency and the use of any fuel beyond B5 is subject to warranty denial). Seems everyone is moving to the B20, so readily finding B5 in the future is going to be a problem. Would hate to spend that kind of money only to be limited by current and future enviro-regs. Any help with this info would be greatly appreciated.

They didn't say if the 4X4 went up there without the locker just that the AWD failed and the 4x4 went up in 2wd so we don't know if the 4x4 went up or not.
Yes, it's pretty clear when you have opposing front and rear tires off the ground, the van becomes stuck very easily. But with the Locker engaged it was able to get right out of any scenario we put it in!

Wondering the same thing. Certainly with ESP off you would need the diff locker to stop the cross wheel spinning.

Not going to sell many lockers if they show the traction control kicking in and hauling it up the obsticals😉
Typically the EPS or the 4TS would engage. But what we found out in our testing, it wasn't engaging correctly.

Check their recent comments . They tried it with eps on and off…either way it got stuck on rough inclines until they lockered it

Great work, info. I recently purchased a 22 2500 170 extended, it doesn't have a rear sway bar why does the 4x4 have one? can you recommend one.
To our knowledge all the 4x4 have them, Here at Agile, we don't have one that we recommend, except for the factory bar that they come with.

It's probably not going to make that big of a difference, with the limited travel in the uni-body!

In the AWD it’s the reverse ratio that bothers me if it not very low ratio.
