How Much Do Grow Lights Cost To Run?
You'll often hear me talking about how I use grow lights on the channel but a question I'm asked is just how much do they cost to run. In today's video it's experiment time and I figure out exactly how much it costs to run 3 different sets of grow lights.
Besvic Energy Meter - amzn.to/4aPPPH8
Green Haven Grow Light - amzn.to/3NTfHI0
Spider Farmer SF600 - amzn.to/3tKhEQg
Spider Farmer SF1000 Standard - amzn.to/3S8aVZP

Thanks for doing the video, very interesting and informative. Will drop links into this from my own video out later this week.
Interesting and informative, many thanks for taking the time to do this MArk. It is a question I have had or at least my husband has had whenever I set up mine. I have just said they are LEDs so not much power goes through them anyway, I wont show him the little energy meter (great gadget though) as he will be buying one and starting a spreadsheet 😄🤓
I was so pleased to find out they didn't cost a whole heap to run., no more complaints about the them and the electricity bill here either.
I'm planning on doing heat mats / heated propagators as well this weekend, hoping they'll be much the same but you never know! 👍🌱👍
You couldn't have timed this video better Mark 😁. I'm just building my own little grow house and OH was moaning about the cost of lighting it. Now he's on board knowing how little they do cost. Thank you so much 😁
Glad you found the vid useful Debz 👍
I was a bit worried when making it that it was going to show the grow lights are expensive to run. Good to see they don't cost too much so I won't be counting the pennies each time I turn them on 😁
Next on the list of things to test - heated propagators 👍🌻👍
Brilliant :). Will that include the heat mats as that's what i've now got my eye on 😂@@marksallotmentplot
@@debz_vegplot Sure will. Thinking of doing one heat mat and one propagator. With a bit of luck I'll get it done this weekend 👍🌱👍
Look forward to it when you have time :). @@marksallotmentplot
Very interesting episode. I definitely need one of those meters.
Thanks Robin.
I’m loving the new gadget. Testing all sorts of different things around and about the house 👍🌱👍
Great video Mark 😊 MARKS ALLOTMENT PLOIT? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Nae lights for me 'au naturale' in the nice warm hoose😊 with some loving care 😍🍅🫑
I'm not allowed to fill the window sills in the house with all my plants so they get hidden away int he cupboard with artificial lighting 😂😂😂
@@marksallotmentplot ahhh I see 🤣 my hubby very amenable, only a couple of months of chaos 🤗 🍅🫑🌱🏴
Phew…. Kate watches your videos so I was worried there. Phew glad you weren’t telling us they were super expensive 😂😂😂😂
I was so relieved to find out they didn’t cost a fortune to run 😂😂😂
Hi Mark, what a brilliant video! Very informative. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
Thanks Christine, glad you enjoyed it 👍🌱👍
Cracking, informative video 👏👏👏
Thanks, glad you found it useful 👍🌱👍
@@marksallotmentplot maybe you could do an update for heat mats & heated propagators🤷🏻♂️
@Pa-pb6kb Already on the case 😉👍
Absolutely brilliant video Mark!
Thanks JB 👍🌱👍
I bought those lights last year and have them set up over my chilli's. I think for £20 it's brilliant for my needs and it's multi directional. Jo Devon 🙂
Hi Jo, £20 is decent for a set of lights and now we know they’re pretty cheap to run as well 👍🌱👍
absoluut briljant video Mark Top men thans te vlog grootjes ✔️🤗🌡️❄️🧣☕🧤🌜
Thanks Luc, glad you enjoyed it 👍🌱👍
Good video- to me i dont get it a tomato sown in march would catch up in a few weeks with any sown in january unless growing superhots mid feb is when i grow my chillies
Great video ..thank you 👍
Thank you, really appreciated 👍🌱👍
Great video Mark,
really helpful.
Thank you
Glad you found it useful Manol 👍🌱👍
I'm going to be testing all sorts of different things in the house over the next couple of weeks 😁
Really useful thing to know!
Glad you found it useful 👍🌱👍
I'm going to be testing all sorts of other things in the house over the next few weeks 😁
Cheers for this Mark, found it really informative and I'm definitely going to get a couple of those meters - didn't realise how inexpensive they are, and even though I have a smart meter it will be much more accurate to find out how much electric individual appliances use 😀
I'm going to be testing all sorts of different things in the house over the next couple of weeks. Well maybe not the PS5 though as I enjoy playing on that too much to put myself off with the cost of it 😃😃😃
🤣
Really interesting video and very informative.
Thanks David 👍🌱👍
Nice one mark , I knew it would be a scot to do this pricing .. tight as a *** lol . just pulling ya leg cheers mate
Just wait till you see that I've been round the whole house seeing what costs too much to run and now has to be turned off all the time 😂😂😂
@@marksallotmentplot 🤣
Mark
Very interesting indeed.
When you say per day is that 24 hours.
I have 12 sets of grow lights so would be very interesting to find out the cost of running them.
Great video mate.
👍👍👍👍👍
Hi Rob, yup, per day is for 24 hours 👍
12 sets of grow lights!!! Think its time to invest in solar 😁👍🌱👍
@@marksallotmentplot Cheers for that mate, not very often I have lights on for 24 hours a day.
Solar panels is a bit too technical for me.
Great video Mark but the wife was watching so no chance of a spider farmer for me lol
Remember everything you buy for the garden is on 'special offer' 😂😂😂
Thank you Mark. Very informative. I was thinking of getting some growlights for my chillies. Is the 1st set up sufficient.
Thanks Siggi 🙂
The first set from Aamzon would do the job with your chillies. Although I'm lucky enough to have the Spider Farmer ones I still use the ones I got from Amazon when I start to run out of space and the do a great job for the price 👍🌱👍
Very useful info Mark however as former energy advisor folks should know that end figure should include 5%VAT just a good to know thing as those final figures you have given don't have VAT added. All energy sources Elec, gas, coal, oil etc have 5% VAT to pay. 😉🔌🔥💡
Hi Flora, great point about the VAT. The price calculator I used to work out the prices included VAT. However, I've made sure to mention this in tonight's video which looks at heat mats 👍🌱👍
Get video Mark. Thanks I’ve toyed with grow lights but m in Midlands England and I have a very useful south facing window ledge with a radiator underneath. I’m assuming those little lights might be cheaper to buy and run but you’d need more of them to grow more stuff. Hence running cost increasing. So makes sense if you can to get one for the size you need?? Then again an upright set up-with seed trays on several shelves would need more lights under each layer wouldn’t they? I guess overall cost will depend very much on. Your set up.
For the little lights I’d generally only get about 2 cell trays under them. The bigger Spider Farmer one will cover about 2sqft and I cram loads in under it 😋
I’m lucky that we have solar panels on the house so the cost is minimal, well when it’s not too cloudy here in Scotland😂
If you were using shelves you would need a light for each layer. I’ve got a setup in the greenhouse like that 👍🌱👍
I've given in and bought the wee one through your link 🤗🌱🏴 how about a video on grow lights for beginners? 💡
Brilliant!
Welcome to the grow light club 😋
Oh and thanks for using the affiliate link 👍🌱👍
Sowing peppers on Friday 🤞🫑🌱
Very helpful, thank you
Glad you found it useful Pauline 👍🌱👍
I'm going to be testing all sorts of things all over the house in the next couple of weeks 😁
Nice video. It would be interesting to know the lumens output of each against the running costs.
Thanks Stewart.
For the Spider Farmer SF600 its 10718Lm±5%@AC120V; 10799Lm±5%@AC240V.
For the Spider Farmer SF1000 its 16710Lm±5%@AC120V; 16677Lm±5%@AC240V; 16654Lm±5%@AC277V.
Unfortunately I don't have the specs for the cheaper Amazon ones. 👍🌱👍
Excellent video Mark - thank you for the run down - one question: When you state the cost per 24hrs - Is that cost for the lights on for 24 hrs?or just the cost for running for the number of hours required by the plants / per 24hrs? - if you see what I mean! I suspect the former.
Thanks Peter.
Yup, the per day cost is for 24hrs. It’s very rare that I’ll run my lights for 24 hrs a day perhaps only if I’ve messed up and need to rush something 😂
Most of the time for me it’ll be between 12-18 hrs and not at full power 👍🌱👍
Excellent - Maybe time I set up with a lamp. There again, I bet it would just result in the pigeons crashing into the house windows as they wing their way to my brassicas. Reminds me - not long 'till the greylag geese arrive - better get the heavy netting ready.@@marksallotmentplot
Really interesting
Thanks, glad you found it useful 👍🌱👍
Very informative, off to remortgage the house with my light setup. Lol
Thanks Jason.
I'd spotted your post on the Discord earlier with the grow light setup and chilli plants. Might be time to invest in solar 😂😂😂
@@marksallotmentplot I don't think the sun can provide enough energy, lol.
Very useful Mark thank you!
Thanks Richard, glad you found it useful 👍🌱👍
Had to go buy those meter thingys as I’ll need to find the running cost to use my vitopod with its sun blaster lights. Think that’s gonna make me flinch a bit!
I’m worried what I’m going to discover is going to cost a fortune to run 🙃
The heated propagator is next on the list but will add that into the chilli sowing vid due out in the next week or so 👍🌱👍
@@marksallotmentplot If the LEDs are over the heated propagator then its wattage will be reduced due to the heat from the LEDs. My MarsHydro LED virtually turns off the propagator LOL
the 1000 only has an effective coverage of about 2 ft squared 👌 hope this helps
2sqft is just about the right size for the space I've got in the cupboard I use it in 👍👍👍
I use the cheaper Amazon ones as a bit of an overflow when things get a bit tight for space 😂
@@marksallotmentplot sounds just about right 🙌 let the growing season comence haha
The cost you quoted for a day, is that 24hrs? I use mine for 10 to 12 hours depending on the growth stage of my seedlings
Hi Phil, yup the cost is for 24 hours. Like you mine are generally only on between 12-18 hours a day depending on the stage the plants are at 👍🌱👍
Seems like my last comment was either deleted or the calculation link was not liked.
Anyway, at 63W the SF600 costs 33p day to run for 18 hours per day - £2.31 per week
Deffo not deleted. I’ve been having my tea and then watching Potty Mouth 🙃🙃🙃
I was surprised at how cheap the lights can be to run. I’m lucky to have solar panels on the house as well so a bit more of a saving on top 👍🌱👍
Probably the link. I commented yesterday not long after you uploaded it.@@marksallotmentplot
@@marksallotmentplot And my follow up to this is missing too LOL Gotta love TH-cam! I'll unsub for a few days then rejoin you.
lidl are selling them middle aisle
HI Dave, I didn't these were for sale in the middle of Lidl!
I'll have to check them out the next time I'm there 👍🌱👍
You say price per day BUT is that based on them being on 24hrs a day or part of the day say 10 hrs ??
Hi, the price is for 24 hours a day. I generally only run mine from 12-18 hours depending on the stage of the plants life and the time of year.
So I guess actual running costs will be even cheaper than the figures I worked out 👍🌱👍
I love my grow light but wlyh they are not cheap
Hi mark re potty mouth try Jamieson brothers up there for compost and asparagus/potatoes etc
@@gardenaddict 😩hate it when that happens
I've had seed potatoes from JBA before but not tried their compost.
Will have to give it a shot if the postage isn't too much 👍🌻👍
@@marksallotmentplot I ordered 5 60ltr bags of their professional compost cost £59 including postage I live in Sheffield it’s lovely stuff. Hope this helps x
