Great video, the 9th one is so true, is my favorite and the one i teach my students too. Don't rush to export, give your brain the time to de-tox, you'll probably need to make some further changes and then export.!
If there is no time to wait and need to export right away, A reference image is also a good idea to compare to.. Instead of 30 min or a day just compare and see if you are far off.

The best tip in this is the wait 30 minutes, I cannot count the times I have gone back a day later, or later in a day, and realized I was too heavy handed with my editing.

One of the key things you do so well is to dismantle the elitism from photography. I have a few different interest fields (cycling, photography, etc), and all of them are plagued to a smaller or larger extent of elitism. "This is how we do things, and if you do it differently we will look down on you and ridicule you". I believe this is a phenomenon which exists in almost all aspects of culture. It's usually spurred and upheld by people's immaturity and insecurity. I love how you are inclusive and welcoming, and emphasize that everyone has the right to do it the way they like.

I haven't really processed RAW images since school around 11-12 years ago, so this is a great refresher for me.
I shoot RAW & JPEG because most of the time I just want a JPEG ready to share with friends and family, but I like having the option to go back and process any RAW images I have later on.
May be an inefficient usage of storage space, but I don't shoot enough for that to be an issue.

8:30 - "You're the boss here" - Once I finally realized that, after trying to mimic everyone's youtube guides, rather than viewed them as basic understanding guides, everything became clear and I was actually processing my own photos. This took me a few months for this to click, back when I first starting processing.

One thing I like to do, that coincides with your waiting 30 minutes… I will the shrink the photo down to where the long edge takes up about 2 inches on my screen. I feel that helps you see an overcooked image, easier. In portraiture, if you’ve whitened the eyes or teeth to an unbelievable amount, it will stand out by doing this. It also helps seeing too much contrast/saturation/just about anything else in all styles of photography.

The last tip is the best. What I do is after I finish processing I look at the photos on a different device like a 4K TV. Also as I learn more I keep coming back to the processed photos to apply what I've learned. Processing photos is a never ending journey for me. I remember when I first started working with LRC i would saturate the hell out of my photos and I used the clarity slider way too much. Now, I have leaned to control myself and use everything in moderation. Thanks Simon for another great video.

  • @VegasGuy1975

The tip of wait 30 minutes is gold. Many people don’t realize that the rods and cones in our eyes adjusts rather slowly. As a result, when we spend 10 minutes in front of a screen developing a photo, our eyes are adjusting to that screen. Resetting your eyes by walking away, and preferably spending 15 minutes in natural light before returning really changes not just what we see, but how we see it.
This in turn will change how we make final adjustments and the resulting print quality if you plan to produce the print for your living room wall for example.

  • @jrober42

I am impressed I think that you are the only one to actually include how you export a photo at the end of your workflow. It ties everything together, non-destructive editing and saving the image with the baked-in edits and the creating of a preset for future use. I know that these topics do get discussed, but many presenters consider the job done when that have made the final edit. Another thing that I like is that you simplify the way you edit by showing exactly what you have done and the reason why you have done it. This I find leave me in no doubt as to what I need to do.

Just WOW. Although I'd used older versions of photoshop, I was still a bit lost when it came to lightroom. Had tried it a couple of times, but always gave up - I couldn't find what I was looking for, I didn't know what every slider etc. did. But 15 minutes with your video and I feel more confident using it. I actually immediately put it back to the start and went through your steps, not only editing a photo of mine as I watched, but I kept pausing so that I could create a written step by step guide to act as an aide memoire. What a great way to start my new year by watching this video. I'm a long-time LRC user but you've still taught "this old dog" some new tips. These are easy, simple-to-use procedures that will enhance any photo. My workflow is similar but probably not as organized as your's. Your recommendation of leaving the photo for at least 30 minutes is a great tip. Evaluating one's work with "fresh eyes" usually reveal changes that will improve the image. Waiting until next day is even better.
I love your content and your friendly, concise delivery of information. I wish I could have gotten your advice and tips when I was starting this hobby 60 years ago. It would have saved me a great deal of time, frustration and money. My granddaughter (16) is interested in horse photography (she participates in English jumping). Photographing horses and jumpers is like "wildlife" photography with similar problems of lighting, freezing action, techniques and equipment. I'm going to recommend she watch your videos. You are a great teacher and she'll benefit from your experience. You explain the concepts much better than I can. Very best wishes for continuing success in 2024!

...and ctrl-y is "re-do" if you want to toggle back-and forth. Nice of you to provide a very straightforward tutorial. As you point out, there are multiple RAW processors and related software out there and many of us prefer more "pro-centric" programs such as DxO PhotoLab and Capture One. Not only you you own these (as opposed to Adobe's rent-them-forever scheme), but they enable finer control over tonality, HSL, and other parameters while being much more powerful (with a bit more of a learning curve--an F1 car's a lot harder to drive than a road car but these programs are very manageable and offer free trials). I also have Topaz but prefer DxO's NR in most cases.

Thank you so much. Lightroom is pretty intimidating and makes me want to shoot mostly in JPG so I don’t have to mess with processing. I still keep the raw files though so I don’t miss anything important and can rescue a good shot that had poor settings. As long as I’m in focus, LR can take a crappy pic back from the brink of disaster.

Its amazing that we're given such amazing tips free of charge, great video Simon. Your exporting tip has completely changed my life on social media, even though I use Capture One. Thank you for sharing this with us 😊

    Fantastic tips thankyou.
I've only just started editing raw photos so my last few edits have been complete guesswork. Will take another to at them tonight and hopefully will get better results.
Personal favourite tip was being able to select the subject to edit separately followed by editing levels of a single colour across the whole photo.
    Thanks again!

I wanted to thank you, with sharing your work and insights, I was able to improve my photography skills and shooting more consistent pictures. 😊
For the tips, I agree for the 30 mins wait. With years, sometimes I want to come back to some old photos. But now, I'm always editing with the original and the edited one side by side to stay on tracks. :D

The ‘wait 30 mins’ tip is the best. My first attempts at editing were very saturated and ‘crunchy’. I’ve calmed down a little now!

Thank you Simon. A really good video in simple terms. I struggle at times in LR but looking at this video simplifies certain aspects of editing. Thanks again.

Another very good video. Thank you. I have a love/hate relationship with LRC. Love the lens presets but coming from Aperture i have always hated the GUI interface and got used to doing most of what you describe in photoshop. Hate the folder organization after being burned by Aperture demise. Process is great and big learning for me was auto subject detect and white selection. 👍

Nicely done, Simon. Thanks for sharing your workflow with us. I do a lot of what you demonstrated in my workflow also, but it's always nice to have confirmation you are doing it right as the amount of adjustments are really overwhelming. I did pickup on a couple of good suggestions such as saving the adjustment settings and wait 30 minutes...all good stuff sir.

I love these kinds of videos. They are so helpful and actually take me through the process of not only how but why we make changes to a photo! Would love to see more of these style of videos! 👏

As a Lightroom user for almost 3 years (and still a hobbyist photographer) I loved your video because I can relate so much to it. The main thing I took from this is that I really must start creating my own presets because I do so many similar adjustments on pretty much all of my editing and I know that presets will definitely quicken my workflow. One thing that I love which I never see mentioned is that for me a quick way to see before and after is to hit the backslash on the keyboard. I love it. May I be cheeky and suggest that you narrate your videos ever so slightly slower. Carry on your great work Simon! Best Regards

Great video Simon...I like the fact that you said to do what you like with "your" photo, unless youre selling your photos for profit, who cares what you do with your photos, if you like a certain preset..i.e. Sepia...then do that. I will sometimes go back to my photos after awhile and change some tweaks that i did the first time.
