Hopefully the foam and innards are not waterlogged. While you have it stripped down, tow it to the local dump and get it weighed. That will tell you a lot. That's a bargain at twice the price! Nice score. If you don't follow through, you'll get your money back and then some. Keep us posted!

A few years ago, I sold my 1961 13' Whaler for $750, no engine, and in much, much worse shape than yours. For $400, you did well. The biggest factor will be any water in the foam and in the transom. Can't wait to see future updates on this Whaler!

Great find! Some fiberglass work and a new paint job, that boat will be awesome. I recently purchased a foam filled Mckee Craft 14' with trailer and 50hp for $1300. I'm going to bring it back to new condition and use is on my Florida trips and use it here for bass fishing. All the best. Jim from Georgia

Great find! I think you could ship that to me in Hawaii and we still come out ahead when compared to the amount I would need to dish out to get my hands on a 17' Montauk here. I'd guess yours would still be in better condition than anything I could find unless i am willing to spend upwards of $20k. Your next challenge will be to find a good cheap outboard. I think I saw the original 70s models powered with a 115hp 2-stroke and the newer ones come with 70-90hp 4-strokes. This build is going to be interesting!

Wayne, I take issue with your "two best days in a boat owners life" statement. I love my boat and have had many, many days that were better than the day I bought it. But, the day I bought was fun! There have been problems like when a fuel pump dies, but overall I have derived much joy and pleasure from my 19" runabout. I did but it new and have taken care of it. I agree with another commenter, get a weight on it to see where your at. But even if it’s water logged, I still would restore it, cut the deck off, scrape out the old foam, inspect the stringers, do fiberglass work, pour in the new foam, replace the deck and build up from there.
It’s such a basic design in its current state, imo it’s worth it to take the time in restoring.

Good roll of the dice. IMO, almost everything is easy to fix with one exception...take it to a truck scale and compare its weight to spec. If you don't, you'll be wondering about it for the life of the boat. Waterlogged might not be the end of the world. They are silly buoyant. That said knowing it is waterlogged might inform how you invest in it.

Is it, as it sits, rigged to do what you want it to do? What do you have to add, or replace, to get it to where you want it? (I'd like to have the console and the seat that it came with). There is also the obvious question, what trailer are you going to get for it? If you're happy with this boat, I'm happy for you! R, Steve

I don't ever see drift boats in my area, and first learned about them just a few months ago. Ideally it would be nice to try some different types and styles of boats to find the right one for you and the people you'll be boating with. Stability, space, layout, ease of use, water conditions and lots of other factors can make what seems like an ideal boat for one person into a horrible choice for another person.
