What's the furthest you've ever walked?

The furthest I've walked has been 9 miles. It was rough, but I enjoy looking back on pictures from it all the time.

I just did a hike last weekend and am editing it as my first video. I have way more respect for those who do this on a weekly or even monthly basis. The editing is taking ten times longer than the hike did.

I feel your pain - I did this hike back in February but between work and other things I only just got the edit finished this week!

Lovely video! The furthest I've gone is up a mountain in Glacier National Park MT to Ptarmigan Tunnel, it's 10.7 miles roundtrip.

Well put together video, Tom. I enjoy watching your content everytime you post, and it is very interesting to learn more about your life, in these videos. Also, I like the longer videos a lot. ❤

I’m fascinated by the algorithm’s lack of love for your channel. You’ve clearly been working hard and I think you’ve made some really valuable content. I had to watch a few of your videos (which I quite enjoyed) to come up with a theory. It’s possible that if you stay the course one of your videos will explode (this is often the case) but I do see a consistent problem that might actually explain the matter better.
Your video packagings (thumbnail and title) blend in with the cinematographer how-to niche (for better or worse) too well and then fail to reinforce their individual themes quickly enough (for worse). This video for example didn’t even get to any aspect of walking until a single word on the screen one minute and two seconds in. Had I not already watched a few of your other videos I would have clicked away. My expectations for the video weren’t confirmed by anything within this time and instead, I was shown a montage representing the unpleasant noisiness of modernity. Thematically this makes sense in relation to the rest of the video, but it doesn’t make thematic sense in relation to the packaging of your video. Your intros ought to reinforce the theme of the packaging. They shouldn’t reinforce what you know is the theme of the video because the potential viewer doesn’t always (or usually) know the theme of the video. They only know the theme of the packaging. Packaging is the first aspect of storytelling that must connect to the greater structure of the video in a logical sense that can be reasoned about by the viewer before having understood the greater theme of the video.
I suspect that this issue explains your channel’s pre-blow-up status. I could be wrong though. And I’m only leaving this feedback because it really does seem to me that you’re 99% of the way there and have already worked out most of the more difficult aspects of being a TH-camr. Great job!

Mate, I reckon you've hit the nail on the head tbh...
After I made this video I thought retrospectively this exact same thing. I've done it a few times going back through my videos and you can see the drop off on the retention charts for sure.
If I could redo it - I'd maybe cut that montage from the beginning and use it as end credits instead. Doesn't matter then if people click off so much.
Really appreciate you giving the videos a watch and the honest feedback 👌🏼

@@tomrenegadefilms You could have also kept the montage by inverting the structure. Let’s say the video opened with you walking with no music for a few seconds and then as some music fades in your narration begins with something like “It’s hard for me to believe now that something as simple as walking would accomplish so much.” Or something of the sorts that alludes to what the viewer doesn’t yet know, strengthening the curiosity gap while reinforcing the theme, and followed by even as cliche of a line as “this is that story” leading into the rest of the video as it currently stands.

@@BackgroundCompany Yeah I think a bit of TH-cam cliche is probably a good thing for intros - I keep being too artsy... Food for thought...

    • @BackgroundCompany

@@tomrenegadefilms there are definitely ways of realizing a sticky structure that are true to your artistic vision. Formulas are structure, not content; content conforms to a structure. A lot of creators seem to conflate these two. Stick to your artistic vision because you’re doing great. Just reinforce the user’s expectations sooner and they’ll stay around longer to appreciate your artistry.
