- Even though we had the 2017 Audi A4 for only three months, it started to feel like part of our family, a comfortable fit for our life, but still somehow special in a way we appreciated everyday - despite any little quirks and flaws.

Perhaps because it has been so hectic over the past few months that it quickly grew so familiar, putting on over 6,000 miles of commuting, comparing, shuttling the kids around and even a short road trip up to ski country.
Through all that, there have been barely any complaints, but I’ll get them out of the way right up front.

I test drove this same model about the same week this video was posted and I honestly thought that drive was just excellent. I can also appreciate the learning curve required to adjust to both the virtual cockpit AND the MMI, which if I decide to purchase this vehicel will NOT be a problem. I am looking forward to a longer test drive in another month or two with this same model. I believe any serious test drive should take at LEAST 30 minutes or more to guage the nuances of any vehicle one may be interested in. Thanks for the honest and excellent review.

I don't consider over 6,000 miles as a long term test. I would appreciate a review after 50k miles of use, so consumers can get a better understanding of the vehicle's reliability rating.

Good review, the exterior design is conservative but it grow on you, the interior is very minimalist and very smart, the volume knob location, the interior lighting, all white colour, not flashy red or blue. The engine and transmission are fantastic, very good amount of torque at low Rpm, very solid car, very quite. It is built smart, not too many switches or Knobs, most switches and Knobs are multi function( very smart), the radio pre-set switches, just under your finger tips when you have your hand on the shiftier. Also another thing to like is the price, it is well below the other two competition. The only things that it misses, sunglass holder. I have a 2019 one and so far it has been joy to ride it.
Brilliant words towards the end and that’s why I’m sticking with my 2017 A4 for a while, I love it and had never knew I would say that about an Audi. I’m BMW and Mercedes driver for a past 27 years
@Elof Ragnar I have the '17 A4 also, and the only time I've had problems with the lag is when I (ahem) don't do a full stop at a stop sign... The transmission thinks I want to stop (because I nearly have!) and I've confused it by stepping on the gas. I don't notice any lag when punching the throttle to accelerate, to give an example.

especially the new a4 models which is bigger then the 2016.
i am 6'2 and weigh about 260lbs and i was more than comfortable in the 2017 a4 prestige that i took on a test drive. I have a 2016 528xi right now but i plan on trading it in for the 2017 audi a4 prestige by december of 2018 right when they start releasing the 2019 models.

@@danielallan2537 No I was able to trade her in back in November of 2018 for a 2019 Audi A4 Quattro in the prestige option. I am in love with my A4 it has been so much fun to drive and the options that come with the prestige package are amazing the customization seems endless. The ambient lighting is my favorite with over a dozen different colorways to choose from you can set the lighting to fit any mood, the best feature of my A4 is the Virtual Cockpit coupled with the center MMI center display makes my daily driving so much more engaging and fun.
I will however recommend BMW to anyone who asks my 2016 528i xDrive was such a great car.

Where is the extended road test ? I didn't like this review. Some of the review kept repeating the same cabin ergonomics and other points of the vehicle as well. How did it compare to the previous model ? It seemed like a watered down version of Consumer Reports.
I have only owned and driven less-expensive American and Japanese cars in my life. These cars are price around $25,000. After test driving Audi Q5 Quattro and Audi A4 front-wheel drive at Audi Concord in Northern California, I have to say I was impressed by Audi's Q5 and A4. Audi Q5 Quattro was amazing in turns (on ramp to freeway). At high speed in turns I felt minimum forces in the other direction (i.e., if you are turning right then you feel strong forces pulling you left). Also the 2L 4-cylinder turbo charge had plenty of power on acceleration. The Audi Q5 Quattro is a SUV so I would say it is high (high center of mass) off of the ground. The minimum pull force in turns was amazing as I have owned and driven a similar sized Japanese SUV and the pull force away from the turn was significantly higher and forced me to slow down. The Audi Q5 was traveling much faster than what I was use to and I was shocked by the lack pull in the opposite direction. The braking on the Audi Q5 is also amazing compared to my old Japanese SUV. I did not know you can engineer away the laws of physics. Or can you? Of course, the Japanese SUV is half the price of the Audi. I also test-drove the Audi A4. It too was a 2L 4-cylinder with excellent acceleration for my purpose. The Audi A4 is front-wheel drive and not Quattro, and I can sense the acceleration was less than the Audi Q5 Quattro, though there was plenty of acceleration with the A4. The A4 also did well in turns relative to pull forces, the A4 was stable and always in control with excellent braking from high speeds. I am impressed by the handling of Q5 and A4. Both vehicles had a comfortable ride but still delivered decent handling & road feel plus the interior was quiet. As for handling & road feel and a quiet interior, it is difficult to have quiet, comfort, and smooth ride and still have excellent handling, road feel, and safe sound detection. There has to be a compromise. The A4 I test-drove was listed at $41,000 and if I wanted the Quattro A4 it would cost $50,000. That is nearly double the price of vehicles I have owned in the past.

Are you sure it has dual injection? At 2:22 you mention the fuel injection system that has direct and port injection. I'm nearly positive that Audi didn't include the port injection on US cars. My '17 doesn't have it, and the dealer (talking about maintenance needed much later on) mentioned that this is the cause that some 2.0T's need the intake cleaned sometime well north of 50k miles... no fuel in the intake, so whatever oil (from the turbo) and other stuff gets burned into the intake and onto the exhaust valves.
Other than that, I agree with most of what you have to say. The lag at maneuvering and stops/starts is the only drawback I find, I don't have any problems with the dual screen. The lag is the fault of the DCT, and most any car with a DCT has it also.

Claire Kennedy Just because it's a sport sedan, doesn't mean I can't point out its deficiencies in practicality and ease of use. And yes, I am a soccer dad, and I shuttle the kids around in this thing: www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2016/08/continental-controlcontact-sport-a-s-road-trip-and-tire-review.html, so I put my money where my mouth is in terms of vehicle choice, and am willing to give up that practicality for dynamics, but I still need to make sure people realize there are alternatives like the higher-riding A4 Allroad.

How is 3 months a long term test? That's still within the new car honeymoon period. Please review again after 3 years, and then 5 years.
The low speed clunkiness and hesitation can be mostly overcome by putting it into sport mode. Once you’re up and running, flick it back into D.
Or you could gave gotten the manual transmission. It was available back then.

Why do people keep calling the 3 series the performance benchmark in the segment? It has literally been getting 3rd or 4th place to Lexus, Cadillac and Alfa for the last year. I like BMW but I think the segment leader moniker is past due
Having driven the 2017 A4, the low speed acceleration lag is so bad that I wouldn't consider buying one until Audi fixes it. Everything else about the car is above average. However, they need to get the basics right.

Yes, the A4 is still available with a manual transmission in Canada and the US.
Would that eliminate the low speed occasional hesitation? In other words, is it the dual clutch transmission issue, as some report is also present with other makes?
AutoGuide.com would love to see a review on a manual A4 as I've never seen one on the lots or in reviews
I am putting in the request to review it just for you! (Or maybe it's totally self-serving, we'll never know.) The last Audi manual I drove was a Euro-spec TTS, and it was pretty disappointing - far too light a clutch and shifter action, so I'm curious how this one is for NA. It is probably pretty rare indeed.

Does it have to have s line badge to be 252 hp? I contacted Audi about my 2017 premium and they said it’s 248 hp. No s line badge. Someone mention me and let me know if Audi is wrong.
The A4 B9 engine is totally loaded out and can be tuned to introduce 55 more horse power. I'd recon someone at Audi marketing or sales thought the power of the A4 engine was too close to the S4 or something so they decided to add blockers, regardless the A4 engine can easily be opened up. The major differences between an S and A after tune will come in the power distribution at higher gears, obviously the S will maintain more of its power 5-7. But unless you're actually racing or doing quarter miles, this shouldn't be something you would experience in a daily driver.
I didn't know there was a horse power limit between the A and S series... seems fishy given this information.
Good luck 48,000 miles wouldn't even look at another, 55,000 you better save your pennies for repairs about 10,000 to 12,000 to keep on the road 200.oo dollars for a oil change 740 for battery plus the fun of riding in the flat bed truck to the dealer yes have fun.
Why do you refer to miles and miles per gallon when you are a Canadian show? Why not give metric first and imperial units after!

It's funny that the output of the A4's 2 liter-4 (252 hp, 273 ft.lbs of torque) is nearly identical to the 2 liter-4 on my '17 Focus ST (252 hp, 270 ft.lbs of torque, ) yet the heavier, all-wheel drive, 7-speed dual clutch Audi is just a little quicker. Kind of makes me wonder how the ST would perform with a dual clutch auto versus its 6-speed manual. But there's nothing better than the manual on that ST.

What I don't understand is why you guys insist on only providing info in Imperial numbers but not metric. It's a better system 'and' some you are based in Canada. Why the hell aren't you using metric as well?
They probably study the traffic and subscriber statistics, and viewers from Canada are likely a tiny portion of their overall North American audience.

It's crazy how big the A4 has gotten. It's a shame that even the 3 is so huge. Wish Audi made a smaller car

I think all entry level luxury cars base engines should be @ 2.5L 4cyls or a 3.0 V6 and then go from there. and that is waaaaay too much for a 2.0 4cyl.(***PRICING) AUDI should leave the 2.0 engines in the VWs and then maybe they, VW would have a good excuse for the price$ they charge on their cars also.
Why? lol. It's faster than all other Luxury sedans out there in this class. 335i is not eligible for comparison. This smokes 328, C Class, etc. Only one competing would be Q50 / IS350. it's amazing how with the most little things, audi achieve the most....fuel efficiency is great as well....

its not the 90s anymore where a 4 cyl cant push past 150 horses.. the 4 cyl in this one is turboed, does 250 horses, with an ECU tune you can hit 280-300 easy out of this engine
uh huh I KNOW... all i'm saying is that a luxury sedan, even the BASE model should have a larger displacement (even if it is a 4cyl) to justify pricing other wise they could've put this engine in the JETTA GLI and the PASSAT, or even the CC to justify the pricing.

If you want more responsive acceleration, put it in dynamic mode, BOOMER

It easily crosses the 60k mark for Audi A6 which also has a 2.0L turbo. 70k mark for E-class or 5-series, so things can get even pricier.
Even a fully loaded Acura TLX V6 AWD, which is more powerful, is cheaper, while only sacrificing some city mpg.

The car was off, when the vehicle is just turned on without the engine, the check engine light will be on; until you put your foot on the brake and start it.

A big part of the appeal of Audi is that they are understated, not for people who want to show off.
Tesla Model 3 is better.
-Better Autonomous features that embarrasses the $100k A8 and further updates for full Selfdriving
-Better door handles that are sleek
-0-60 in 5.1 seconds
-more cargo space with a frunk,
-no tunnel hump for the middle seat, with all center console storage in place of a gear selector.
-Cleaner design and faster UI like an iPhone.
-Bigger glass roof.
-Automated charge port vs a cheap manual gas cap.
-No stinky and sooty tailpipe or ugly grill
- Model 3 costs $1,000 for metallic paint.
- A4 costs $575 for metallic paint, and choices you do not see in Model 3 like green metallic, an extra shade of silver-gray, an extra shade of blue, and black metallic.
- The A4 sprints 0-60 officially in 5.7 seconds, but Car & Driver and Motor Trend have recorded faster times at 5.2 and 5.4 seconds, respectively.
- No center hump, but it has rear vent and heated rear seats.
- Has all-wheel drive.
- More options for leather colors and wood/aluminum trims.
- More (attractive) wheel design choices.
- The UI includes buttons and knobs and it does not take multiple steps to change fan speed or radio station.
- Full Google maps at the instrument panel, which Model 3 does not have at any price.
- 360-degree surround camera
- Few minutes to charge gas rather than few hours.
- Not only 4-year/50,000 miles warranty, but also 24-hour road assistance during the 4 years.
- No need to wait 2+ years.
Don't forget reliability of the Tesla is going to cost you thousands once warranty is all out

Those wheel designs have ugly lug nuts showing while Tesla has a more unique lamda look.
Tesla has all heated seats ,rear air vents, usbs,and faster warming up cabin inside a closed garage.
Tesla has rear view camera that can be set while moving.
Has eight cameras, radar and 12 ultrasonic sensors all around the car and a supercomputer with over 12 teraflops of deep learning power for Full Selfdriving. Also OTA updates.
Tesla has no need for a key or pushbutton.
Dual motor with no mechanical linkages is more responsive and better performing.
UI is easy to use with one tap on the screen to change the fan speed and music, and also controllable by the steering wheel buttons, along with voice command.
Along with a low dash,this sets up a very homely cabin and a clear view of the road for an uninterrupted driving or Selfdriving experience.
Tesla navigation uses google maps
Tesla had eastereggs and a way faster CPU.
Tesla can summon out of a puddle or tight parking space.
Full charge everyday instead of a tiring errand to go out and handle gas like a dirty mechanic.
Tesla has better performance.
Tesla is the more exotic car.
