    I have had my A4 for one week. It took about 10 minutes to learn how to put the transmission in park instead of reverse. Have not made the mistake you mention -- not even once.

    Mercedes has had awkward stalk mounted shifters for years and BMW has been using the Park button on their awkward shifter for years. Not sure how this could be any worse. Seems like the A4 has the best solution of the three.

    Please! I got used to the shifter in no time. Just train yourself to press the P for Park button when parking. It's not that difficult to do. I do it without thinking now. Nice review, by the way.

      Yeah. It is not that hard. For starters it can feel weird, but you must be complete dumb ass if you don't learn to use this shift stick. Just press the button every time you want to park, it is not that hard. Also I don't agree with touch-screen complaint. Do you really want to reach for the screen while driving, instead of using easy and intuitive system navigation? Of course touch-screen could be an option for those who feel the need for it. I don't need or want it and I own an A4

    • @SomeLazyDr
      @SomeLazyDr 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a shifter that'll take you at least ten minutes to figure out. I'm not kidding. It's weird as hell. Go get a Silvercar and fuck around with one.
      It's not too bad after the ten minutes though - but you do have to pay more attention than a conventional PRNDL transmission.

    I've had my A4 for about 2.5 months now. I admit that the shifter was a bit confusing for the first week. Especially compared to the Acura that it replaced. But after that...I'm totally use to it and isn't a problem at all.

  • @jamiroquai01fan
    @jamiroquai01fan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    The transmission is great. It's not stupid, you are. The P even lights up to tell you you're in park and the virtual cockpit also displays a P within the rev counter.

    Loved the video and thank you for your review! I just bought the 2017 Audi A4 with the Premium Plus, Technology and Sport packages and it's an amazing car. I will admit, the shifter did take some getting used to but now that it's been a few weeks, I don't mind the design at all. It's fun to drive, looks sharp and is competitively priced with the mid-level package.

  • @crimsonstang
    @crimsonstang 8 ปีที่แล้ว +41

    I hate when reviewers say that it looks just like the previous generation. It really doesn't at all. The new BMW 3-Series looks more like the 2016 than the 2017 A4 and the 2016 A4.

    • @teksgeroi
      @teksgeroi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Indeed. And why should exterior design be something totally different? Why invent wheel again? So many cars are damn ugly because they have forced "revolutionary" design

    • @zt3457
      @zt3457 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The 2017 3-series is the same car as the 2016! The 2017 A4 is redesigned. Totally different situation. You're comparing apples to oranges.

    • @jeebs621
      @jeebs621 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      PCMasterRace you can definitely see the difference in the A4, a lot of reviewers are biased, they don't really give Audi design the props it deserves

    • @honeytgb
      @honeytgb 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's because the BMW 3-series had its redesign in 2012. The A4's redesign was with the 2017.

    • @WorldTravelerCA
      @WorldTravelerCA 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      PCMasterRace totally agreed you can see from far away when 2017 A4 is approaching from rear end from the front as those lights are very distinctive as well as the body shape and Hood Line now moved down to a sides, and now Audi A4/17+ is the only vehicle that has this design

  • @Amor_Fati_

    hmm..first comment i've ever left on youtube....had 2 Acura TLs...didn't like the tlx...went shopping and found the a4...4 months ago...just love it!!! Has more torque than the TL'S and is just so much fun to drive in sport mode--love the sport seats--so comfortable and never realized there was any issue with the shift lever p vs. r...great review otherwise.

    Haha, fantastic review besides your fixation on the shifter. I’ve driven a few cars with it and never had an issue, A4, A6, Allroad. I actually like it more since it’s less obtrusive in the cabin, feels roomier and makes for a great area to put your wrist while controlling MMI. Finally a reviewer who talks about the DRIVING, with examples and doesn’t just read the damn spec sheet. Can’t wait to buy this car used in a year or so.

    My wife's 2014 MB C300 needed replacing, and she insisted on wanting an A4. So, with limited time I took a look at a CPO 2017 A4 premium, almost base model and was so impressed I bought it for, um, her. I currently drive a 4runner, but before that a very modified e36 BMW M3. I agree with almost all of the reviewers comments. Impressive, and I liked it so much I bought a CPO 2018 loaded P+ with Sport Package today. And as others have said, I got used to the shifter very quickly. I had one instance when I put it in reverse when trying to put it in P, but I'll learn to acquire new muscle memory quickly, as I want to drive this car a lot. The 07 4runner is now only going to be used for the occasional offroad use it gets. Love this A4 and the dual clutch transmission!

    The 2017 A4 S-Line is my fourth Audi A4, obviously I love it. The only thing that's bad-- other than the fact that I've never successfully changed a tire on any of them-- is that the "Auto Select" transmission sometimes slips into "Sports" mode, but only when I'm in snow or heavy rain! It's extremely worrisome, but I am so familiar with these cars I can switch into the adaptive mode with barely a glance down by my right knee.

    Solid review, except for the hate on the shifter. I really don't understand how it could be any more simpler than just pressing a button to put it in park. From the moment I looked at the shifter, I had it figured out. It may take some time to develop muscle memory for it, but I think it's all around much smarter and easier to use.

    When I first bought my 17 A4 - that shifter drove me nuts for a bout a month then I got used to it and now I have absolutely no problems with it as this car is a perfect package especially at the red lights. I’m pretty sure many of you owners of 17 A4 will agree with me

    Hello, Chris... I've just discovered the reviews via Car Guru's. I recently drove a 2017 A4 Quattro just like this one you reviewed. I, too, had some issues with that transmission. However, given everything else about the vehicle, I suspect my learning curve with both the transmission AND the virtual cockpit/MMI infotainment system would mature rather quickly and I'd just "get over it". The car I drove was out here in the Sacramento area and the MSRP was identical to the model you reviewed. Not sure I'd get the quattro, but either way, I think this particular Audi is just "lights out". I've been driving Lexus cars for nearly 10 years, so a departure to the German auto market is a bit weird for me. I'm looking forward to it, though. I really appreciate your candor with the "issues" you had. Great review.

    The shifter was an issue for me for the first 3 days, you get accustomed to it quickly. Overall this car is just a dream to drive and I have not even had a chance to get on it yet due to Audi's recommended 600 mile break-in period. I have a few minor gripes like why the center screen is not touch and the location of the turn signal indicators. In the position I sit in I cannot see the turn signal indicators and that's more annoying than the shifter. I've had this car for less than two weeks and I would highly recommend it. If you are in the market for a car in this segment do not pass up test driving this car.
    Great review BTW!

    I'll have my new A4 tomorrow ! I did a long test drive, along with Infiniti, BMW and Lexus. I found the Audi best car in it's class for the same price point. Note: When I parked on reverse after my test drive, I put it back on reverse then opened the door. Lucky that the Audi safety feature worked, otherwise, I would have bumped an A6 ! I didn't knew about the Parking button then.

    Not sure why you struggled so much with the shifter; you should always look at the gauge cluster to see what gear you're in before driving or getting out of the car no matter car you're in. It also only takes a little retraining of the brain to push the button for park rather than shoving the shifter forward. Many manufacturers are using a shifter like this now.

  • @desolator1990

    Pretty sure the BMW 3 series ZF shifter has a park button similar to this, but on the top of the stick. Even the C class has a park button on the end of its stick lever on the steering wheel. Seems to be the norm nowadays.

    i just drove it, the shifter is not a bid deal at all, unless you are a real slow learner. I've driven many 2017 models vehicles in the last month and a lot of cars are going away with shift levers anyway. it's just the way things are now and the author's dislike is strangely over exaggerated, otherwise it was a good review.

  • @longbowdt
    @longbowdt 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lots to like about the car, but I think I 'd look for a more "analog" sedan. I like the Audi's engine it's DSG, and quattro performance with it's heavy rear bias during acceleration, but I don't like the car being intrusive when I'm driving, and I don't like the idea of the danger of putting the car in park because of the confusing selector (ala Chrysler). Good review. Thanks for highlighting the pros and the cons.

    The shifter seems logical to me. Park is right at the thumb and, as you said, a resting spot for your hand while driving and accessing the pre-programmed stations and/or mmi. So, to me, this is just simple conditioning. I applaud the design, but understand why it would be awkward for those transitioning from standard automatics. I did find it awkward that you would end the piece with your troubles with making sure your vehicle was secure. I can't say for sure if it's comedic distaste or if you willingly left a vehicle while in neutral/reverse/drive.

    Just got my 2017 a4 premium plus. What is the difference between the bang and Olufsen in the 2017 A4 compared to the ones in the A6,a7, and a8?
    I also am finding it hard to tune the bass treble, 3d zone, and wether to focus it to the front middle or rear. How do I tune this because it sounds different for the radio vs Bluetooth vs xm Sirius radio. It's kind of frustrating. I can't get it right. Never had this issue with Bose or the standard a4 system. I figured this is better but now I'm having doubts.

    I completely understand what you mean about the shifter. However, the shifters in the BMW and Mercedes competition are far far worse. We figured that at least Audi left the shifter in a "normal" spot with some resemblance to a mechanical shifter. This bridged the gap between an old shifter and an electronic one. The way lesser of 3 evils. We only test drove, our 2018 arrives soon. I think there is some type of safety system if the vehicle is exited.

    Shifter is NOT a problem. It is the future, embrace it. I have more of an issue with keyless entry. With a key you know you turned car off and in park if you are holding the key. With keyless entry I would wonder if I turned car off since I do it on "autopilot" It is not the car as most cars have keyless entry.

    While I understand your frustration with the shifter it wouldn't put me off, it's simple, just press the "P" button for park, pretty simple no? Also don't comparable German sedans have similar systems such as the 3 series transmission controller? The Mercedes system is different again so there's different systems out you'd at some point have to get used to anyway if these cars are your bag.

    The thing i really don't like about these is the Mustang-like rear turn signals. Sequentially illuminated as they are turned on I just can't stand that design for some reason. I know I'll NEVER be the one seeing it but that's just me. I like the Audis that have the full LED housing light up all together from their past vehicles.

      I guarantee that BMW and Mercedes (and Hyundai and Kia) will copy the sequential signal lights in the next year or two. Just like everybody and their mother copied when Audi came out with LED running lights back in 2009. Now everybody has 'em!

    If you open the door with the car on reverse or froward the automatic safety system will put the car to park , that is a safety system on every Audi

    Coming from a vehicle that uses buttons instead of a stick lever in its entirety, I don't think that the design would be challenging. As long as one understands that the gear lever will always return to the center and the user has to push P for park, then it should not be an issue.

    Absolutely not, the shifter is fine, you will have to get use to it. Technology wise, no competitor offers what Audi is offering, so yeah clear choice is Audi.

    you will get used to shifter really quickly. I had a problem like you did on my Q7 but you will get used to it as an owner

    I don't understand why Audi needed to change the shifter this way, especially given the terrible tragedies accompanying some other brands' redesigns of the same. Some of the commenters here are overly sanguine about a driver's ability to always, absolutely, 100% of the time overcome thirty or forty years of conditioning pushing the shifter up or forward into park. It takes just one incident of jamming the shifter into reverse (which is what you do if you press the shifter forward) to have a very expensive, possibly tragic, situation on your hands. I test drove three A4s today and loved them, but the issue with the shifter gives me serious pause. On a related note: I do wish Audi wouldn't tease people by saying manual transmissions are available, but then not actually ship any to dealers. It shouldn't be so difficult to find a manual version of a sports sedan. . .

    Yeah the transmission thing's really not that hard to learn. Just pay attention to what you're doing. It's electronic so it doesn't feel like a regular shifter at all

    As a long time Audi S4 owner looking for a new car, I have to say it is disappointing to hear about (and not for the first time) this gear selector problem. I would agree that this is inexcusable for Audi especially with the (unfair and unjustified) sudden acceleration notoriety debacle of the 90s. Audi doesn't need this. Unintended movement is just not cool in a modern automobile and manifestly unsafe for anyone who might drive your car without knowing the possible glitch in putting the car in PARK. Audi, please fix this immediately and while you are doing that, put the "infotainment screen" on a retractable sliding mechanism to allow the driver to remove the constant eyesore of that screen from the dash.

    You have to be kidding?? The shifter is not confusing at all. I have been driving a BMW for 4 years with this type of shifter with ZERO problems ever. Reverse is FWD and Drive is to the rear and push the button to park, it's that simple! This type of shifter is not new in the auto world and the reviewer should know this.

  • @mikegeoghegan7503
    @mikegeoghegan7503 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    A lot of OEMs are using 'push for Park' these days. As another reviewer said, it really isn't that difficult to get use to and internalize. I otherwise liked your review, but the overemphasis of danger of the shifter was total nonsense. It smacked of what 60 Minutes did in the 80's.

    You sure about the steering? Audis have the rep of being somewhat numb. There are plenty of bad shifters out nowadays, everyone wants to reinvent the thing. It would not dissuade me.

      All the auto Journalist have the same conclusion. Mercedes c class is on a higher standard then the Audi. Quality is also way better. An Audi is just a VW with an audi badge. Same engines and tech.

      ok that explains it...the c class looks really dated in the instrument cluster,the rear lights look feminine and the infotainment screen looks like it was bought on ebay.In addition the drive is a bit lame.

    Pointing out that the lack of a touch screen is a minus because it forces you to use PHYSICAL CONTROLS WITH ACTUAL FEEDBACK WHICH YOU CAN REMEMBER IN YOUR MUSCLE MEMORY AND CONTROL WITHOUT TAKING YOUR EYES OF THE ROAD is beyond idiotic :D
