It's funny because when I write a story I usually know what the middle is gonna be, not the end or into.

    Congratulations.
I tell my critique partners all the time to enjoy the fact that this time--the moment when draft 1 is done--is the most beautiful part of the process. No judgments, no second guessing, no imposter syndrome...yet.
I wish you luck on the editing and querying days (weeks, months, years?) ahead.
Not enough people talk about this process especially the energy that is lost after.
It's a big freaking deal that you finished the draft!

thank you! i was in an immense low right after the ‘high’ of finishing it and i agree-the first draft is the most special!

Congratulations!! Take whatever time you need to recoop before you get back to revising. You deserve both to be proud of accomplishing this AND to rest and decompress!!

Honestly, I need writer friends. But I'm already bad at making irl friends so basically I have like no hope. lol. I know I'm improving in my writing. I nowhere close to where I want my writing to be but I know, slowly I'm getting there. The issue is I have no idea which areas I need to put more effort in improving. I could spend like months or years working on my prose without even realizing what I need to be doing instead in working on my characters or dialogue. My entire family hates reading and my friends either read different genres or wouldn't know where to start giving feedback that's actually helpful (which sorta sounds mean but I just mean they usually read for fun and they don't really analyze the books they're reading.) I don't know where I'm going with any of this, but I guess I was wondering if you had any suggestions on how I could possibly make some writing friends.

you're definitely not alone in this, as I've gotten this question many times and have had similar conversations w/ writers about the difficulty with finding a writing circle. if in-person is possible for you, I'd start with asking around at your school or local library about writing groups or even just any kind of literary community that is relevant to your genre. I made some writing acquaintances while taking writing classes in university, but I know that's not always applicable to everyone's circumstance, so finding a similar community online is a good option too. if you can connect with other writers organically in discord groups or on twitter, I've found that many writers are pretty willing to beta read or be critique partners.
but making connections is daunting, whether writing related or not, and it takes time. it's okay to just let your writing be yours for a while and you want to make sure the people you're giving your work to are people you trust. in the meantime, read a lot!! read what excites you, interests you, etc. get to know who you are as a writer and find some security in that before branching out, and that can help curb the nerves. in any case, I actually think it's a good sign that you recognize your writing isn't where you want it to be. means you're open to feedback and have the willingness to improve! that's important at every stage of the writing journey i think.

@@KrisMF thank you for getting back to me. I’m probably going to try finding a writing group on discord.
I don’t really think the irl thing is a option. Most of the stories I write usually center around queer characters and I live in Zimbabwe which not exactly queer friendly.

9:25 "Get yourself writer friends that gas you up when you need it." That's how I feel about some new friends in my circle, younger folk who came into it out of the sheer passion that's gone missing for brittle old farts like me. They want to do cool things, and they've been pushing me to do cool things with them. My writing has gotten sharper as a result.
22:10 "How will this find an audience?" is the most irritating and intrusive thought on a 1st draft, and it's a bummer you had that. Hopefully that has passed since you filmed the clip, and you've been able to latch onto your novel's weirder grooves.
25:08 Who are you? You are Kris. We love Kris. Your next project will love you.

Congratulations on finishing your draft! I hope you go back to revisions once you’ve taken some time away from the project. I had to do this with my PhD dissertation novel (doing second draft revisions right now) and took a month off before I started working on the second draft. But I understand the warring excitement and also burn out feelings really well. I hope you treated yourself to something special when you finished your draft. Congratulations again! 🎉

Gotta love weird books! I'm sure you will find an audience :) At least you made me want to read it. On the other hand, who would want to read absolutely uninnovative books? You've got this!

Experiencing the same feeling. I finished my novel in November and am struggling to pick it up and read it again now. I’m very proud of it but I also feel like no one will want to read it.

it's a tough feeling, for sure. the best thing i did for myself after finishing this book was to forget about it for at least a week or so and give it to trusted beta readers :)

Hey 👋 I have been following your content for some time and I wanted to find out if you host writing events in your country. Oh. By the way am from Africa, Zambia and I would like to network with writers beyond the continent. A way of expanding my knowledge as far as writing is concerned
