There's nothing wrong with these sets, but Capcom seems to continue with the same issue that Worlds defender sets had, where there is a severe lack of communication to new players about the cost to choosing to go with this powerful gear: 1. It gets rid of a significant amount of challenge (Especially unnecessary for Rise, since it's already relatively easy) 2. It ruins a new players natural learning curve. With a lack of danger, new players won't really care to learn how to properly play defensively, and time their attacks. 3. It makes a huge and rewarding part of the gameplay loop irrelevant, which is farming monsters, crafting new armor and weapons, and tinkering with different mixed skill sets. 4. if these new players decide to buy the Master Rank expansion, their training wheels come off and they start getting punished by MR monsters for not understanding basic fundamentals. This type of gear has a place in Monster Hunter, but it needs to give more information and context in game, so they know exactly what they are signing up for.
This is the truth, especially your second point. I've personally known a few friends who tried getting into MHW, loved it all the way up until Master Rank and suddenly dropped it because their defender gear suddenly wasn't carrying them any more.
I get that Capcom wants to help new players see new content and get to where their buddies are, but I find that it really ruins things. In a game about stat and equipment progression you can't tell players to not use what's numerically good and handed out for free. As others in the comments have pointed out, it breaks progression, and the learning process. I honestly think the best option would've been to add higher difficulty quests that allow you to skip other main quests. Maybe even with special rewards for higher Hunter Ranks to help out. It's an opportunity for them to play with their friends, speed through content, and learn to deal with the difficulty and mechanics of the game.
I would say another good way is to save defender weapons and black belt armor until a month or so before the final DLC of Sunbreak. I thought the same with World/Iceborne that the defender set should have come out roughly 2 months before Fatalis. Maybe make it part of the story with some posts on social media or a video like this with Fugen saying, "The guild has been discovering signs of a great power rising up. A few elite hunters may not be enough, so we're releasing this new "training" armor to help quickly guide the rookies into the full fledged hunters that we're gonna need."
I didn't like the defender weapons in MHW. They were so much stronger that it made it unnecessary to craft any other weapons, and since crafting new gear is half the fun of these games, it was kind of a bummer. I stopped using them after I realized this and I had a lot more fun crafting, upgrading and trying out the different versions of the weapon I main'd.
Got my gf started on monster hunter world iceborne. Played it myself in 2018. I'm looking at her screen some days later and understand that she missed whole tutorial, don't understand what rolling does, can't perform panic dive (!!!), confused about what "skills" are. And of course she was using defender weapons. We talked about that, she gave regular weapons a try and later said that "regular weapons are hard". Idk what capcom was thinking. Getting people to play this game brings them money, yes. But like this where they miss whole point of a game?

@@LaserTractor They want people to be able to rush to "the good stuff" quickly so they don't feel like they're being left out, be that the G-rank in sunbreak or late game of Rise. The problem with this mindset, and a problem I feel is leaking into the games as a whole now, is that they don't seem to understand that the "slow parts of the game" at the beginning are where people learn how to properly play the game. If you give them shit to skip the beginning, which is objectively the easiest part of the game, you're going to have players at late game that know fuck all about how to play properly or what to do. And what comes from that? Dissatisfied players. People who give up because "suddenly the game is too hard," or hinder other players online because they don't know what they're doing when everyone else in the party does. The fact that Capcom is giving players tools to skip learning the game, rather than tools to make it easier for them to understand stuff that might be confusing, is a dangerous trail to go down, and I'm worried things will slippery-slope their way to a world where no one has to work for anything in these games anymore if they don't want to, completely defeating the whole focus of the damn series in the first place.
It's a good update for those coming from the switch, but I feel a bunch of people playing for the first time will also rush the base game to catch up to sunbreak and get a wrong idea about the game
I’m having a bad feeling that Fatalis is going to be the Master Rank monster for Sunbreak. I’ve heard a lot of stressful facts about Fatalis’ fight in Iceborne.
Thing is, Rise is such a quick and easy game to run through even compared to World that the idea of something making it even easier seems do dumb to me. When you include all the counters that most weapons have most monsters are a breeze, especially with long sword.
I think this probably will just be a 5th gen design, because the amount of people disliking this is enough to the point that sunbreak might not even have a high rank defender gear for master rank.

Friendly reminder to try not to use any of these because it really, really trivializes the game. Just pretend the defender weapons don't exist and you're good to go. Though if you want to use them, it's fine, but do remember that it's going to worsen your experience.

From my personal experience, when I started Worlds, I immediately saw Defenders and thought, "Why would I use anything else when these weapons have higher stats and easier mats?" Which is why I made the comment in the first place.
Capcom is sold to the "targeting newer audience to get more money agenda" Long gone are the days when MH team loved and respected their craft and fanbase. If what I said is wrong then tell me that why did MHW had mantles, insane mobility, qol, microtransactions and defender gear in Rise too. It is impossible that they do not realize that their reputation is on the line but they stopped caring about that. Defender armour is proof of that.
There will always be people who were very clearly carried, no matter the game. I encountered several people in MHGU with their basic, starting armor in late High Rank, as an example. Watching an HR 6 gunner with 26 defense getting triple carted by Glavenus multiple times was soul crushing.

Why does this defender stuff get added? To try to push DLC sales or something? I feel like it would ruin the experience of the base games for new players since it would be so much easier than it already is.
It's great for experienced players, but newer players will feel the game is easy if they are like the ones from World and than get stomped at Master/G rank and get frustrated and possibly leave. It's weird. Feel like they shouldn't just be free DLC, but maybe rewards for doing something with the intial Arena quests. That way you can only get them once you have a sufficient understanding of the game.
@@cptlemon8859 They already addressed that already before the game even launched. Usually every time they try to do something big mechanically it makes the game a bit easier and they adjust in the next entry. 3U, GenU (save for some Deviants) were all like this. When they did World it felt easier than earlier games too. That's even before taking in player experience and skill from having played multiple entries in the series.
I agree. But I just think Capcom needs to implement some kind of system that clearly explains to new players what choosing this armor means. Maybe when creating a new character, after you customize your hunter, the next window gives you 2 selections: "Normal hunting experience" or "Easy Hunting experience." If the player selects easy hunting experience, then a window pops up saying, "This starting gear is for players that want a more streamlined and easier experience. With this set equipped, you take significantly less damage, and deal way more damage. Optimized to get you through most of the game, relatively hassle free. Do you wish to continue?"
A good 90% of the comments are on how this armor and the weapons are gonna be busted. It literally only has 30 defense. It'll get you out of low rank and that is it. You'll have better alternative weapons and armor as soon as high rank hits, as green sharpness 150 attack isn't really ideal. Stop worrying about carrying as if your 2 hour grind for better armor is so much more than the main grind through the game. Which is still sameish, only slightly faster with these sets.
Relax man, with a new dev team for Sunbreak I'm pretty sure Sunbreak will at least be comparable to Iceborne, if not almost at the same level. Kinda like "Yall had it easy, now have some fucking fun"
At least they are optional and are not required to used them all the time. When the defender waepons came out and i started a new play in world, i barely use them once, i only used them for farming monster parts from low rank and high rank. And then when i started G-rank/Master Rank, i drop then complety because they are practically useless in MR. As for the armor, is basicaly is the same thing, they are optional.
@@MonsterMindEntertainment Tell that to my friends who finally picked world only for them to give up because their defender weapons stopped becoming easy mode for them. New players who know nothing about monster hunter WILL use these weapons.
Call me a toxic gate keeper but the defender set and weapons let new players completely bypass the core and essence of monster hunter which is hunting monsters and using their materials to craft new gears to take on more powerful monsters. Imagine adding an outfit in devil may cry for Dante that automatically pulls off perfect combos for you or from software adding an easy mode to dark souls. If they insist on adding this set every time they are about to release the G rank expansion at least warn the players that they’ll miss the core experience of monster hunter if they do decide to use it.
These sets still require you to learn mechanics. It's not like it's going to play the game for you. The core essence of Monster Hunter is ranking up and if you think it's anything more that is subjective. The entire goal of the game is ranking up. You don't see "make this new stuff NOW" on the top right, you see what quests you have to do to rank up. Making new stuff is a large incentive when you make some rank ups, This is literally the biggest non-issue i have ever seen personally for this game. The armor only has 30 defense. The weapons get 1 upgrade to 150 damage green sharpness. This is to bring you out of Low rank quicker than usual. It would be thrown away out of low rank because 30 defense isn't so good when compared to the most basic of high rank sets. The weapon may stay a little longer becauss 150 damage isn't so bad but you will find an alternative by one more rank more than likely. The set is essentially saving you on making 1 or 2 low rank sets and maybe a few weapons. Low rank is such a easy thing to get through as it is, so this just makes it a little easier. No reason to complain because it's not going to ruin your experience either way. You're likely already at the top or nearing. On the wait for Sunbreak.

I'm pretty sure the point of the set and weapons is to just speed through low rank exclusively. Like, for people that went from switch to pc and don't wanna go through low rank again. Hell, we see in the trailer that the weapons can only get upgraded once, meaning that they won't get too far, especially for sunbreak. @@redraptox Getting your arse kicked is part of learning the series. I know exactly how I sound when I say that, and I wish there was another way to put it, but they already cheapened that enough with base Rise. Yes I'm experienced with the series and had played hours of the demo prior to the full game, but I've restarted MH4U a few times after getting to G rank and still the game proves itself as somewhat of a challenge. That was my first one, 4U, so I can say with confidence that making Rise even easier with defender stuff may make newcomers look at the series and see it as something it's not. They'll race through the base game with defender, then get their arses kicked in a way the devs didn't intend, and they'll drop the game just before MR picks up speed and gets properly good. They'll leave the game unsatisfied with their few hours with it. Because let's face it, using the defender stuff to cheese through the base game will take no more than 20 hours to get to Allmother.
People complain about it ruining the curve but honestly in low rank there is no curve, you only focus on attack boost and raw damage on your weapons until you get to high rank. Low rank gear is near useless and the only purpose of lower rank weapons is to upgrade them into high rank versions of said weapons. I am legit tempted to make a second save file now because the only thing holding me back was the grind.
i'm only using it to speed up some progress on a 2nd safe file i made but honestly if i was starting the game for the first time i wouldn't bother much because it's more fun upgrading and forging your equipment yourself, showing how much you've progressed and that is the fun on MH games lmao

Now, I'll be totally honest, I love having the defender weapons, they really cut down on grinding time and that's always helpful, however they do make fights pretty bloody easy, at least early on. If I could give any advice to new players about this, it's to not use these, at least for the first hunt. Monster Hunter is a game where knowledge is power, getting used to a monster's attack patterns and quirks is like 50% of what makes you a better hunter. Trust me on that one. Use it for repeat quests, don't get me wrong, but when fighting a monster for the first time, PLEASE don't use this stuff. Yeah, you'll absolutely trash it, but it'll be over so quickly that you just won't have the same experience, and you won't learn as much.
The weapon caps off at one upgrade. 150 raw with decent green sharpness will blast through low rank, sure. It also doesn't have Blast, so you can't just stunlock monsters the entire fight. The defender weapons are fine, since they are simply a general boost up for your basic damage, but I would be concerned about beginners using black belt. Recovery up, ear plugs, and flinch free are great skills, but not something you should use as your 'default' experience. Getting more damage and sharpness early on is less of a problem by comparison. Even with good weapons, you still need to learn how not to get smacked around. High damage turns into no damage if you don't learn how to not get knocked halfway across the map by every bear's charge.

@@urcovered1231 yes im aware. but im 99 percent sure it isnt a technical issue seeing as plenty of switch games have cross save with their pc counter parts. what im saying is its most likely an issue with nintendo and that the pc modders will make transferring your save possible just like they did with world.
There's nothing wrong with these sets, but Capcom seems to continue with the same issue that Worlds defender sets had, where there is a severe lack of communication to new players about the cost to choosing to go with this powerful gear:
1. It gets rid of a significant amount of challenge (Especially unnecessary for Rise, since it's already relatively easy)
Seems like the defender gear only gets up to end of low rank/start of high rank stats, so they're not nearly as bad as in world
Probably going to be irrelevant after 2 hunts in Sunbreak.
@@Lyonatan it's irrelevant after 1 hunt in high rank.
@@Lyonatan You're right, but you're missing the point if you think that's the only issue.
It does I had a friend finally tried world and said he found it boring. Later found out he was using the defender equipment through low rank
Yeah but it’s also super helpful for people going from switch to pc and saves them from spending needlessly grinding to get where they once were.
@@Nrex117 I agree that it is, but I think high-difficulty quests that let you skip other quests is a better alternative.
Honestly I think they're nicer for repeat playthroughs. You know, takes care of some of the tedium on repeat
I didn't like the defender weapons in MHW. They were so much stronger that it made it unnecessary to craft any other weapons, and since crafting new gear is half the fun of these games, it was kind of a bummer. I stopped using them after I realized this and I had a lot more fun crafting, upgrading and trying out the different versions of the weapon I main'd.
it's all about try and error
Got my gf started on monster hunter world iceborne. Played it myself in 2018.
I'm looking at her screen some days later and understand that she missed whole tutorial, don't understand what rolling does, can't perform panic dive (!!!), confused about what "skills" are.
And of course she was using defender weapons.
We talked about that, she gave regular weapons a try and later said that "regular weapons are hard".
Idk what capcom was thinking. Getting people to play this game brings them money, yes. But like this where they miss whole point of a game?
@@LaserTractor yes so true, people who play this way are soo missing points the way this game are made to play. it's made-up to be hard that's why it's enjoyable

Thing is, Rise is such a quick and easy game to run through even compared to World that the idea of something making it even easier seems do dumb to me. When you include all the counters that most weapons have most monsters are a breeze, especially with long sword.

Idk rise felt extremely easy to me I beat in in only about a week, whereas working world took awhile even with the defender stufg
@@cptlemon8859 They already addressed that already before the game even launched. I agree. But I just think Capcom needs to implement some kind of system that clearly explains to new players what choosing this armor means. Maybe when creating a new character, after you customize your hunter, the next window gives you 2 selections: "Normal hunting experience" or "Easy Hunting experience."
If the player selects easy hunting experience, then a window pops up saying, "This starting gear is for players that want a more streamlined and easier experience. With this set equipped, you take significantly less damage, and deal way more damage. Optimized to get you through most of the game, relatively hassle free. Do you wish to continue?"

You'll have better alternative weapons and armor as soon as high rank hits, as green sharpness 150 attack isn't really ideal. isn't Rise already REALLY short and simple? Come on.
Series continues to head in the wrong direction. While I love the design of the black belt set, why not have it earned instead of a welfare handout?

@@itme7902 Except Rise is the perfect "Baby's first Monster Hunter" game. The least they could've done is wait until the actual release of Sunbreak to give people who want more content a quicker way to grind to the actual difficult stuff. Assuming Capcom is capable of making Sunbreak hard in the first place. I can at least appreciate the return of the Black Belt armor. it's a nice throwback.
Rise is easy enough. Why should you need this lol.
Still not as broken as defender gear from World it looks like, so that’s nice, no blast element and a lower stat cap plus the armour is still not nearly the same level of defence
Was it really necessary? Do new players really need stronger equipment to get an even more unbalanced experience? The story from low rank to high rank final boss is already too easy, with some difficult quest only in the most recent event quests, but giving to new players a stronger equipment will cause 2 things :
Some new player will arrive in sunbreak without even knowing what are dodges and counters
Some players, finding the game too simple, they will stop playing it
It would have been better to do anything else with those days needed to create these weapons and set armor
yes when they want to play sunbreak
@@cheemslord9917 The thing is MHR is already stupidly easy and short, so this seems like overkill.
Ah yes, easy mode for the MH easy mode game. I don't understand you capcom, what happened to this franchise? Sold its soul to the main stream I assume
Man I feel like people are overreacting the fuck over this armor set. Like I understand people don't like Defender but bruh. This only the base game not even the expansion yet. I'm gonna use this because I'm not gonna continue on my switch anymore and gonna restart on PC.
All is good but it's weird that you feel like people are overreacting the fuck over this armour set but then again you also understand where they are coming from...
@@stephenjohn2131 bro its just my opinion, believe me I played through Iceborne and used the Armor only because I already played through world once. Like bruh, I'm not saying the armor is a good addition but I'm also not saying its bad. What I'm saying is though, this is base Rise and the impact it would have would probably be very minimal due to how bland Rise's difficulty is
How can you say that were over reacting but that you also understand where were coming from? I wish they whould have delayed this untill Sunbreak atleast so new players whould be spared from this crap...
@@draw2death421 I'll retract my statement about understanding then if that's the case.
This is great for those who already played the game and can just simply rush through to get to endgame, but it will be a huge slap in the face for new comers. The game forgives bad positioning enough with wirefall, newbies having good protection will just make them not care about it even harder and when they'll get to sunbreak they'll get shitstomped in the game. This will lead to a bad experience in multiplayer for both veterans and newbies
True. Online in World felt like Sting operation, easy if everybody knew what they are doing (2 easy for me). Here its just clusterfuck slapfest. Even easier
@@olenhol2przez4 Rise is only easy because of wirefall,it's basically a "undo my fuckup" button. There is literally no punishment for bad positioning, just wirefall and pop a quick Mega Potion. Rise pretty much deleted the strategic aspect of MH...Is it safe to go in,will the monster do a followup attack after this,i need to get an opening to heal/sharpen. Now is pretty much just go in,monster knocks you away with a sudden attack, wirefall, heal back, jump on your palamute and sharpen while the monster is trashing around like a kindergarden kid on too much sugar. I get that they want to make MH more accesible for newcomers, but with each new title it feels less and less like an MH game and more like an action hack and slash with some elements from previous titles.
It's safe to say that Sunbreak will be the last new MH title that i'm gonna play and then just lay the franchise to rest. I really hate the direction the game is going...
Cause who wants to play the game anyway? Seriously Capcom why shoot the game in the foot by taking away the early game experience and carry noobs to quests they're not prepared for. Rise is already the easiest monster hunter in the village. Also releases at the same time as elden ring.
This is awesome man !!!
What is the name of the OST playing in this video?? Sounds like an amazing compliation of themes!
Proof of a Hero. It’s the main theme of monster hunter and that was the Rise version.
Just for switch or steam also get?
i thought this would at least release when sunbreak comes out but okay i guess?
Why would you think that
They readily said as you progress through the game you can upgrade them like the weapons don't just require a single point of bone materials to upgrade lmao
Well, I guess we now have Animal Crossing difficulty in Monster Hunter
The only part I'm a little bit miffed about is the Earplugs on the armor, but Earplugs is almost impossible to use normally with it being a level 3 deco, so whatever.
Oh yeah, earplugs on the armour seems just a mite TOO good, but I'm glad they peter out earlier. They'll still be good for early game but we won't see hundreds of defender longswords fighting Allmother or what have you.
It’s not really that bad, it just might take a while for people to realize they can super armor through roars. Like why they cover their ears when Khesu or Basarios roars, but not Rathalos or what have you.
@@davidhower7095
In all fairness about the earplugs, IG mains have that innately (albeit we need to maintain it). Get your White+Orange, or triple buff, and you're now immune to all roars.
Edit: In addition, IG mains also have access to Advancing Roundslash, which is a counter. Even in a situation where we don't have White+Orange or triple buff, we can still counter the roar itself, and get boosted aerial (including Diving Wyvern) damage from it as a bonus. IG mains really don't care much about roars, these days.
man, remember when you had to earn the black belt gear?
Great, Casual mode is back....
My reaction when I seen the black belt armor has returned 😀
My reaction when I seen it isn’t locked behind a quest 🙂
My reaction when I seen the ugly weapons from World returning 🙃
Uh... They are Basically ore weapons, not something like Slap on Design weapons
I wonder what will be the max sharpness on those weapons?
it not strong
150 Raw Damage, Green Sharpness, no element, for comparison, the Low Rank Wroggi LS has the same stats + Poison Ailment
@@TheDevilDucker Ah, shame I was hoping for a decent raw damage weapon for my blunt build.
@@Z-Man7 They're designed to carry players through low rank only this time, their final upgrade just have an overall of 150 Raw Damage for every defender Weapon
That's cool
How about a release date for Sunbreak tho?
The defender weapons are fine, since they are simply a general boost up for your basic damage, but I would be concerned about beginners using black belt. Recovery up, ear plugs, and flinch free are great skills, but not something you should use as your 'default' experience.
Getting more damage and sharpness early on is less of a problem by comparison. Even with good weapons, you still need to learn how not to get smacked around. High damage turns into no damage if you don't learn how to not get knocked halfway across the map by every bear's charge.
The black belt set should have been in to begin with.
Here we go again
I wish we received more info about Sunbreak.
I'm a BIG fan of the Defender Sniper Light Bowgun
Black Belt Armor is back!!!!
But why tho
Stop this fucking thing of defender weapons, it ruined more experiences than the ones that improve
All I wish is to get a lvl 2 QS talisman with at least 2-2 slot before Sunbreak comes out. Been farming it for a whole frickin month now.
Defender gear ruined so many first impressions of MHW and now you added it in RISE as well. I had to seperately tell all my friends to not use defender gear when they started the game or else it becomes a joke.
Hope you can get the weapons layered I like the kamura design on them.
