The chord progression for most of this this piece is the entire circle of fifths in diatonic g minor (with the raised 7th to make the dominant at the end of each progression). It exactly illustrates why the scales were built this way: because it sounds good. There are admittedly a few passages in the middle that use diminished substitutions instead.
No. This is not the part that is the best. It isn't. It's the most known in public, but it's not the best. I don't get why people really like it more than the rest...
@@fatitankeris6327 This part is the climax of the piece and the most important one because the previous musical variations prepare the ground for this moment. Whether it is the most beautiful (as I think) or not is a subjective matter but it is certainly the most important moment of the piece and the moment Händel chose to make it the climax of the piece. After this moment, the following variations' function is to conclude the passacaglia.
You know what I find amazing? Handel and Paganini both wrote pieces that basically add up to a Theme and Variations on the Circle of Fifths, and yet, they are so different, it’s hard to recognize that they are based around the same progression, the diatonic minor circle of fifths.
@@caterscarrots3407 The Paganini is at least a little more interesting because it alternates between a 2-chord cycle (i V) and an 8-chord one (which you described).

At 1:21, the transcriber labelled the right-hand (treble clef) time as 12/8. That's not true, it's still common time. Instead, those are tuplets, not eighths.
It looks like an technique exercises but it is a masterpiece with top musicality.
My friend Wolferl,
The musicality depends on the interpretation of the harpsichordist; and in this case I can say it is of very high quality.

Orderly and neat, Handel would have made a formidable career in mechanical engineering if he lived in our time :)

It's just an alternative way to put it (instead of making out the part as 4/4 and labeling the notes as 8th triplets). Both are valid.
