  • In this slightly longer episode than usual, I set about completing a few jobs from my to-do list on a gorgeous spring afternoon. We'll cut back the wildlife corner and see what perennials are appearing. I also have some new plants to get into the ground! The polytunnel is slowly filling up with seedlings but now the big seed sowing marathon really begins...

Me, being an old romantic, a new growing tree. I can imagine you and your husband to be and of course the children to come looking at it while BBQ time and remembering planting it the year you got married. If not a fruit tree, a nice Rowan, good for wildlife and folklore. Can always have a climber as well, it doesn't have to be dead, lol

I lost my mum, Penny, in 2020 whom is responsible for my love of gardening from a child back in the 90's as she was a passionate gardener and even worked at a garden centre for several years after giving up her petshop.
My auntie and uncle (also keen gardeners) picked me up a gift from our local Chessington garden centre, my first Hellebore, aptly 'Penny's Pink' 😊❤

Maybe you could inoculate that dead tree with some mushroom plugs, perhaps an oyster variety or chicken of the woods. It would look awesome, taste awesome and I'm sure it would also do a pretty awesome job at breaking it down naturally including the root system.

All I have managed so far (central belt Scotland) is to use a spade to clear our front paving stone of creeping lawn and dandelions 😂 Oh and dumped some old cracked plastic containers and broken cheminea that had ended its days as a cast iron bird bath.😅 Ground elder, bane of my life! I wonder how ground elder-strawberry jam would taste….mwahaha! That would teach it!😅

I never tip spent compost onto my beds but put them in one of my many dustbins. The roots rot down in the heat and moisture produced. The nutrients left in the roots will add to the spent compost which is then revitalised with blood fish and bone before using it again. By doing this, I keep hold of peat which is essential for water and nutrient holding which isn't as good in peat free. I'll hopefully be avoiding peat free completely as it's full of micro plastics from the municipal waste. I've also heard that some peat free has ecoli in it which isn't good for planting edibles.

  • @ingeleonora-denouden6222
    @ingeleonora-denouden6222 ปีที่แล้ว

If you pick all of those Ground-elder leaves. you'll have a good serving of vegetables (salad, soup, stew) and you weaken the growth of the plants. Just go on picking and that 'weed' will be gone soon.
About your question: that dead tree looks interesting, you can leave it there, with the bird feeders in it and a nice blooming climber.

I got a helle from b and m, just a white one, had a couple of the green petal flowers as well as Snow White ones. The green ones have faded to a beautiful salmon colour. I only picked it up as so cheap and thought the white can break up some of my other helles, also the flowers face more upwards than nodding down you normally get, so thought will be good to mix in to the next gens. Really so pleased with it for the £5 I spent, they are also 3 for £10 if I remember right

Vinegar and salt added to water is soooooo effective at getting rid of rust btw! Various ratios out there on the web but you can't really go too far wrong in my experience. Maybe 1 part vinergar to 15 parts water, teasppon or so of salt and just let the tool soak in the solution for a few hours or as long as it takes. Rust just falls off. Hoping for a dryish weekend to get another bit of old shrub border cleared. Why not try a greengage instead of your plum - they make such lovely fruit?

Do you get hard freezes in your allotment? How do the clay pots not break from freezing? I love them but the clay pots chip or crack here in my US zone 7. They never survive over winter from the freezing and thawing. ☹
PS I prefer the dead plum tree trunk with vines. It's architectural interest, added height and a great bird feeders display.

No, I don't touch them or harvest the leaves or flowers so there's no reason I would get ill from crops near by. Also, you would need to eat quite a lot to kill someone! It's poisonous so the main reaction I believe would be an upset stomach.

It was originally white but I got it painted to look rusty. It’s made by Birdies.

OMG! Had to tell you, off the record but I know you love your bird visitors to the plot. But I can't attract birds to my garden. I have a hand built nest box on the wall and it's been there 6 years. Nothing. Today I have blue tits in and out, I can hear them shuffling through my cctv and looks promising. The excitement is unreal. Watching all day 😍

Do you keep all your tulips in their pots all year round? X

I do yes! Some years I will stick some bedding on the top once the tulip foliage has died back to keep them colourful in the summer months. The tulip bulbs are 8inches below the surface of those larger pots.

It is really weird to be watching this from Northern California and seeing the sun shining over your blooming garden when mine is still getting pummeled by the rain brought by one atmospheric river after another. Climate change is real.
