Bus ownership just keeps getting more expensive. Another hit to the pocketbook. Bad previous service

- Sparkling hub oil was not in the budget. Oil pressure gauge inop is not good for a new engine rebuild. Just a few last minute items to get this safely back on the road.

I have been watching you guys work for a long time, I appreciate your attention to detail when it comes to vehicle safety. it’s frightening to see how many of these heavy duty vehicles are rolling down the road with lack of proper maintenance.
Thank you for posting this great video. It really shows how many maintenance/repair shops are sending unsafe vehicles out on the public roads. Then the owners paying these shops have no idea the work is criminal shouldn't be able to leave the shop. It's a fact that your honestly helping educate everyone by leading by example. Sadly not many people can afford even one of the old busses. I'm old and like the old mechanical vehicles even though the new ones are driver friendly.
On a positive note, you guys did a fantastic job rebuilding that engine, it looks great and sounds great!!! For that matter the whole vehicle is really looking nice, hopefully its in the home stretch as far as repairs go and the owners will get a lot of enjoyment out of it!!! ❤❤❤
10:30 You know you're having a bad day when the magnet on one of your drain plugs looks like an anime protagonist.
Thanks for video of eclipse Scott.
From Africa.
Bus ownership is a good starter for those interested in owning an aircraft...
The purchase price is always the smallest investment in ownership ;)
🤣🤣😂😂🤣🤣That is the funniest thing I've heard lately.
How does one make a small fortune in aviation? Start with a large one.
AMEN!!😊😅😅😅
Refer to the three-F’s rule. 🤣
Great videos as always BGM. It is because of your channel, long ago I installed two oil pressure gauges on my Cummins. One on the block side and one on the filter housing side. Oil and gauges are way cheaper than $2000 tows and $9000 engines.
Wow he needs a bigger magnet in that diff...
Great video, as always, feel for the owner on this one..
Great job on your end, no matter what.
✌️❤️😊
you may want to hang some heavy mil plastic/poly behind the tool box/workbench area, then the wall wont get dirty anymore and the plastic can easily be changed.
could also spend a boatload and put plexiglass there, so it's cleanable, but that would buy lots of disposable plastic sheeting. 🙃
That bus needed alot of help, alot.. glad you got ahold of it. i hope he drives it to get his moneys worth..
I've always wanted to buy an old school bus and turn it into a camper but these are making me reconsider
Love to videos and knowledge!
I owned the very last builr American New Look Bus manufactured by GMC at the Flint, MI factory. It was built in March 1977
Having served as a city passenger bus in Wausau ,WI for more than a quarter century it was still completely original and ran pretty decent but needed work over the ten years I owned it
Yes it was a money pit and I finally sold it to a man in Lodi NJ who had a bus collection. And yes I took a substantial loss but I have to admit it was a blast to drive to car shows
Glad Scott got better 🙂
Huge bus ! Mike from Missouri
Another whackamole bus - whack one problem and the next one pops up 😞
That is very true. If you look for problems you are sure to find them on this bus…
one step forward and three steps back, comes to mind.
These are luxury vehicles based on commercial vehicles. Being expensive is part of the equation. On the other hand, being commercial vehicles means they’re designed to be serviceable.
Who would expect owning a full-on bus NOT to be expensive? I tow a 17’ Casita fiberglass trailer with a diesel Colorado and think that’s expensive. And: new brakes on ONE SIDE? WTF?
You should try the air hammer to get the conical washers to come loose.
Been a subscriber since you were mobile!
So much time is wasted on removing the split collars on the axle flanges. When they`ve been on for a few years they don`t come off as easy as those ohes did. Then somebody in the shop volunteers to help with the sledge hammer and smashes the studs causing another nightmare.
I keep a few extra studs incase of a stud incident :)
keep the clips coming
It always boggles my mind how a shop can do a brake job yet ignore the absolutely destroyed shock absorber.
No shortage on bad shops!
I drive entertainer coaches for a living, Prevost xls and h3s obviously . even brand new Prevost break down constantly, and anything older than a 2014 is going to be a real money pit, they are buses its what they do.
A new metal flake paint color
Beautiful bus, I just got a 1983 PT40, not road worthy yet, it runs great but needs work. I wonder, with that much metal in the gear oil, what the gear teeth look like...
Go change your rear end oil and your diff plug will look very similar.
There's almost part numbers on the stuff on the diff magnet.
Nah… the part numbers wore off
Wow, A lot going on.
NASA would like you to share that 'sparkling' footage to simulate deep space travel.
How often does this happen? Someone purchases a bus, starts dumping money into it just to realize it will take much more money than anticipated. Then they decide to pull the pin and sell the bus as is?
I feel very bad for the owners. They got blinded by the recently remodeled interior. They are in very deep. The only way to recover is through enjoyment of using the rv because financially they will never get back the upside down financial investment
You’re killing me smalls
@@BusGreaseMonkeyhopefully you can get my nefews bus in in June
and after all that you have to fill it up with $5 diesel, which must be expensive every time.
Try $2.10 a litre in Australia.
Morning
Ooh pretty oil
How much does a hub bearing cost, excluding labor?
I’ve been considering replacing my air bags in my 05 American Heritage they still look good but what’s your opinion on when they should be replaced I’ve only got 70k miles on it
8-10 years rubber life usually but some climates are harder on the rubber
@@BusGreaseMonkey thank you
Aren't the wedges on axles just great. When your hitting the axle to pop the wedges hit it like owes you money
How do you get all the metal out of the diff and axle tubes before installing new wheel bearings? Don’t want the same thing happening again.
Theres a drain in the bottom of the axle housing on most of those axles real pain to get out
If you pull the axles to tow, how do the bearings get lubrication ?
They put block off plates over the ends. Hub has some oil and oil will enter the area when driving
So what did you actually do for that bearing, just adjust it and put it back in? Video didn't say.
We replaced the bearings and races in both drive axle hubs
Are there ever concerns about the bearings in the differential when the glitter is present?
Of course. We serviced it with new oil. Change the oil again soon and monitor the magnetic plug closely. No clunking or excessive backlash detected now. Hopefully bullet dodged but it must be maintained and monitored at an increased maintenance schedule for a while
i can telll you right now based off what I see with the gauge doing that its the oil pressure sending unit fault the gauge sweeps that's a good sign I have had cars do this key on all the way to right that's a oil pressure fault on the sending unit which means the gauge works fine just the oil pressure read head on the unit is bad
It even pegged when i had the wire to the sender disconnected. It also doesn’t reset you have to tip it sideways and tap it many times to go back to zero
This bus has not seen regular yearly maintenance ever . Whoaaaaa!!!
Just repair whats broken , owners then wonder why about poor reliability and big bills LOL
I have a bird in tree making a sim call as what you have near your shop.
sim=simular
Is that something between similar and simulation? 🤔 😉
This ol gile seems to be becoming a money pit because of shoddy work in the past, hope his dream vehicle gets straightened out.
Great video The yellow brake shoe looks very worn on one end Are they made like that ??
They are made like that because that is the anchor end of the shoe and there is less movement over the life of the shoe. Also very little application pressure of lining against drum on the anchor end, highest application pressure and movement is above the rollers on the cam end of the shoe. Those shoes are almost brand new.
bus ownership is expensive....no waaay!!!!
too many sparkles in the gear oil and coming from there equals expensive $$$$.
How did the previous mechanic not notice the worn wheel bearings? Looks like just smash it together and cash in the money for the repair. Actually the differential might also be out of adjustment with that much metal flaks on the diff plug. Just feel bad for the owner cause it's like a never ending problem for him.
I'm now being able to recognize a poor (bad) maintenance job - when I see one
Those fixings on the studs early in the video seems like a poor design to me..... Must have been a good reason though?
The idea is to center the axle in relationship to the hub, so neither can move and wear. I agree, the cones are a pain to remove........
Broken motor homes = death by $1000 Dollar bills
What a shocker. Indeed how many of these are flying down the highways in this condition with drivers with little or no professional driver training?
I have wondered about that, do you need to take a bus driving test for these?
The issue of cost was always going to catch up eventually. The industry has done its best to convince potential buyers that these things are recreational vehicles with all the fancy paint jobs and sparkly bling when in truth they are just jacked-up commercial vehicles with the same costs nailed to them.
There is a school of thought that there should be a similar bond system brought in by governments to ensure that owners can actually finance the maintenance costs incurred yearly to ensure these things remain in a safe condition bringing them into the same oversight category as trucks and coaches. Watching a lot of your videos and the horror stories they reveal plus the efforts you go to to make them at least borderline safe at times only serves to add weight to this idea.
