I agree on how the hunters have gotten stronger and stronger being able to deal with various situations better while the monsters seem stagnant. The fact that one could finish a hunt without having to reevaluate their tactics, as in just attacking, was the part I felt like something was missing in Rise. Rise is a perfect example on how streamlining too much can destroy a game. People praise the streamlining, until they exhaust the game's content in a week and then complain there's no content. Same story every single time. It gets exhausting dealing with it too, because when you point this out early on you get shouted at as "elitist" or "gatekeeping" by redditors, but you know those people will quit the game in a week along with everyone else so you just shrug...

    • @steel5897
      @steel5897 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Forza Horizon 5 suffered from the same thing btw, they throw top-tier cars at you like candy from the start and made it so that any car can beat 100% of the content in the game, with difficulty modifiers being 100% optional with no reward, and accessibility options out the ass. Previous games had penalties for enabling these options, but FH5 took it all away, basically the game comes with a game shark and allows you to go ham with it, with no repercussions.
The game got a bunch of 10s and awards, and yet no one's playing or talking about it a MONTH later. It's like it vanished from conversation.
Devs need to stop making games "accessible", it's gotten to the point of parody now and it's hurting them.

    • @FelisImpurrator
      @FelisImpurrator 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Well, if it looks like elitism and quacks like elitism...
You make zero arguments about how the game was made worse, then just state it as if it's a fact, smugly cross your arms and insist you were proven right by some bullshit you don't bother to show any evidence of, and use it as an excuse to feel superior.
Come the fuck on. Either make an argument, or just... admit it. Say it with your whole chest. "I AM an elitist gatekeeper, so what? I like feeling special because I have things everyone else doesn't. Yeah, it gives me a stronger sense of emotional validation when the game forces me to play a certain way, because otherwise I feel compelled to burn through it as fast as I can and optimize the fun out of my game." Seriously. Just try it. It's fine. It's a respectable preference, for people who actually just have it openly. As opposed to pretending to be the victim for having an opinion that depends on excluding people, and acting all surprised when people don't like that opinion.
More so when you're making a comment about everyone quitting in a week on one of half a dozen videos or so saying they all put in around 200-250 hours into the game. I mean, come on, man. I literally have an auditory processing disorder and my brain cuts out half the words when I listen to spoken language unless I focus, and I was listening to this while doing other stuff. But even so, I can do simple math to realize that 200-250 hours isn't a small amount of time to throw at a videogame.

I loved Rise a lot, but I often found myself running on autopilot while playing it. Playing quest after quest of the same ultra streamlined "jump in the quest, zip directly to where the monster is on the map and beat it up" removed a lot of the magic and wonder that I felt in Worldborne. Figuring out the best pathways of an area, looking for the new monster and then finding it, watching a cool cutscene and beginning the fight was a ritual that I looked forward to every time a new monster was introduced. In Rise, new monsters feel like discovering a new boss, in World, it felt like discovering a new creature with its own unique behaviors and characteristics. Generally, while playing Risez I often felt like the game didn't actually need to put the monsters in big areas to begin with. You don't really search for the monsters anymore, the interactivity with specific ecological elements is heavily trivialized and there is no real point to a monster changing locals anymore. If you need a breather from the fight you can just run away, even without a farcaster (which are only really needed for arena fights anymore) it's not really important where the fight happens since there are way less environmental traps and your movement is completely disconnected from the environmental structure and you can basically change locale simultaneously with the monster due to Palamutes and Wirebug, so there's no "catching up to it" either. Additionally, like you said, monster invasions are now a good thing for the player. In the older titles, from what I know, monsters would just gang up on you. In Worldborne, it depends, but most of the time they still kind of gang up on you, just also fighting each other sometimes or they even have a turf war. That was a really clever feature, because players had a risk versus reward choice to make if they would lure another monster into the fight for additional damage, but also risk having that monster in the fight now too. In Rise, it's just an instant trigger for Wyvern Riding and then the monsters go their separate ways again. Even when the riding trigger is exhausted, they still rather fight each other than the player. It really just makes the maps glorified arenas for you to fight in. Worldborne, on the other hand, had you learning pathways to track down monsters more easily. Which locale the fight took place in was important, since each zone offers different ups and downs. Especially the high amount of different environmental traps (often times paired with slinger interactivity) and slopes and cliffs for mounting are a deciding factor in the locals' influence over the fight. Mounting in Worldborne was also such an incredible feature as opposed to Wyvern Riding. Where Riding us just kind of given to the player as bonus and is way to overpowered, mounting is something that the player has to actively plan for and that requires them to still pass a small skill check to succeed. I often times actively planned my mounting windows around the phases of a fight where the monster would be enraged or in an otherwise dangerous state (like supercharged with Zinnogre or flying monsters... well, flying). If you prematurely used a mount, it meant that you didn't have that option for another situation where it would have been more optimal to use. Riding is always optimal since it completely breaks the entire flow of the fight (though one could argue that the clutch claw also had a similar effect if you learned how to use it).
I still love Rise and it has done so much good, and I am obviously just a Fiver with very little experience with this series. But I still wanted to voice my opinion about this game since I think that we should criticise the things we love. I am incredibly hyped for sunbreak and believe that it can fix a lot of the problems that Rise initially had. Thanks for reading this and have a great day!

I feel very much the same way. I just loved how you can to use ledges and slopes to your advantage in World. I was a hammer main in World and had to use slopes to trigger the spinning jump attack, but in Rise I can do it whenever I want with the silkbind move. Context doesn't matter which takes something away from the experience for me. I also loved that you had to time your jump by using ledges to mount monster instead of just hitring them until the mounting message is triggered. I loved exploring the worlds in World much more and use time to check everything out. Now I just want to get to the monster as fast as possible.I feel like I'm in the minority but all the things that are mentioned as upgrades from World to Rise are downgrades for me. So, Rise is my first MH game.
I think that is it absolutely worth it’s price. Rise has the second most hours of any game I’ve played ever, with ~215. Only being beaten out by BOTW at ~240. Yes, it may not fully live up to other MH games with quest variety. However, as a stand-alone game it holds up itself with the amount of content it has. My only gripes are that apexes have no gear and that the random multiplayer is pretty eh.

My biggest gripes with Rise are probably the difficulty and streamlining, personally. A big part of MH for me has always been taking my time, and throwing myself at a challange time and time again, trying different things until I pull it off. Those challanges are usually the ones that stick with me, and it's a shame to see that Rise doesn't really have much in that department. There were maybe two fights in Rise where I got that feeling, those being high rank Magna, and Allmother Narwa, (which is easily my favorite fight.) Besides those two, I could pretty much breeze through the whole game, without much of a need to stop and plan. I really hope Sunbreak is packed with more fights like that, and that the monsters in master/g rank do a better job of accomodating for the player's heightened mobility

@@marcusaaronliaogo9158 I'm aware of that, but I don't think that has much to do with my issues on the game. My problem isn't that Rise isn't immersive enough, it's that there aren't many memorable challenges or roadblocks. Maybe it's just me, but the lower difficulty combined with the shorter grind makes Rise feel like a game that's just designed to be glided through with very little resistance. That's not inherently a bad thing, but I've come to expect otherwise in MonHun as a franchise, which is why I was a little dissapointed to get such an experience in Rise

It feels like the devs who designed the monsters didn’t take into account just how powerful the wirebugs are when it comes to evading attacks. Sure there are a few attacks and moments where you have to be skillful about wirebug use, but they aren’t very common or are way too simple.
I think the new movement system really changes the flow of battle in a big way and the designs of monsters are going to have to almost always keep that option in mind.
Not that I want it removed! Using wirebugs really made hunting so much more fluid and allowed for a more aggressive playstyle. I have hopes that the Sunbreak dlc will focus much more on promoting skilled wirebug use.
Maybe some smaller monsters knock you down and then watch for you to use a recovery wirebug and then punish you by pouncing on where you land (or hitting you out of the air). It would be up to the player to be cognizant of if the monster is waiting for that option or doing something else.

    • @bloodbane93
      @bloodbane93 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Exactly. The recovery bug is SO powerful and it’s really understated just how much that one move changes the entire flow of the game. You can basically can just ignore whatever the monster is doing provides you have enough health/defense. I really feel like it should be 2 bugs.

Actually if you pay attention to dev interviews, they typically dial the monsters up to maximum difficulty so much that they can't figure out how to properly deal with their attacks. They then dial down the difficulty until they feel it's just right so the difficulty we received in Rise was certainly intentional. For example, Raging brachy in Iceborne had an attack from his reveal footage, not trailer, that didn't even make it to the game and that attack looked f*cking insane to deal with (unless in ~60 raging brachy and watching tons of online footage, I have never once seen it).

I'm gonna be honest, MHRise was my very first MH game, and when I saw the first trailer during the August 2020 Nintendo Direct Mini, I thought "damn, this game looks really cool!" Before that direct, I only heard of MH when Rathalos was added as a boss in Smash Ultimate. Then the demo came out, I installed it and played it and... I hated it. I didn't understand a single thing of what was going on, I could barely take on the Great Izuchi fight, and got my ass handed to me every time I tried to fight the Mizutsune (and don't even get me started on the Magnamalo fight). I thought the game just wasn't for me, I was really disappointed. But then June came, my dog had recently passed away, and I remembered about the game and how you could have a dog to accompany you on your hunts. So I decided to buy the full game and give it a try, and I loved it. I designed my palamute to look like her, and my first weapon was the Longsword (because I didn't know you had one weapon of every type when you started). Initially I had a fear of taking on the large monsters because of the demo, so I did an expedition and my first successful hunt was an Arzuros. Then I went through the game and I faced my first story wall: Barroth. That guy always kept stunning me with its headbutts and I failed the quest like 3 times before I realized I had to make better armor. So I went and made an Aknosom longsword and Ludroth armor set, to finally take it down. And then Magnamalo came. It was a really hard battle for me but I managed to take it down with 2 faints. It felt really good with those end credits. After those two I didn't really have a story wall until I faced Ibushi on the rampage. It took me like 6 tries to repel it, but man, hearing Proof of a Hero during the final phase was really good. Then I completed the rest of the game, slayed the Allmother Narwa, and fought Valstrax. I gotta say, this was one of the best experiences I've ever had with a game, but I really think the endgame should be better, it gets boring after a while (rn I'm farming to get every single gold crown). And even though I've been a Nintendo-only person my whole life, I'm now planning to get a better PC to play MHWorld (if I ever have the chance, but I'll probably just buy MHGU first). Just the fact that a game is convincing me to try playing on other platforms for the first time in my life is very amazing.
    Thanks for reading my comment.
    Sincerely
    A new MH fan.

It's impossible at this point. absolute evasion in MHG had to be charged up and it took longer. you had to hit the monster (or get hit) many times to charge it up. you had to EARN the evasion. rise just gives it to you like candy. wirefall cooldown is too short and is thus spammable

Honestly, my two biggest gripes are:
Magnamalo: is a really poorly made flagship monster (personally), he was built up to be a massive threat, and then gets slayed really early on. In Mh3, Lagiacrus was an invincible threat that you had to run from until you had a final duel, and then fight even stronger versions. Same thing happened with Nergigante, and it really just feels like they wanted Nergi The Sequel, and make him look cooler than he is by fighting elder dragons.
Extra content: I really don't mind the extra quests and im neutral about them, but it really left a sour taste in my mouth were content updates. Updates that were hyped as new and exciting content, was literally just content that should've already been in the game (we didn't even have elder dragons besides the final bosses, and we didn't even have a conclusive final boss, just a cliffhanger fight) and then locking a bunch of items that could've been event items behind a pay wall left me feeling gross. I think Rise is a very good game, but I feel like the roster, despite its number of monsters, is more quantity over quality. There's an absolute ton of basic tutorial type monsters, and it makes it feel kinda lacking when I have to fight great wroggi, great baggi, AND great izuchi in low rank and then low and behold fight the exact same baby boy birds again in high rank. More diversity would have definitely helped this game go a long way (like seriously, 3 basic bird wyverns and they couldnt have but in Bracydios or Agnaktor???), and I hope it's an issue solved in Sunbreak. One side note, I wish they hadn't changed Valstax' theme so much. It felt like it was lacking the intense energy the original had in my opinion.

Yep def this, there’s so many low monsters that just kinda all fill the same slot… I overall just really miss my “Nemesis” from World: Odogaron. I hunted him everytime I wanted to test my new gear cause he fucked me up so much when I started World. His offensive moveset made him the ideal “sparring partner” for new sets. I really didn’t have to Hunt him 107 times… but I did

Probably the best review of Monster Hunter Rise I’ve seen. You’ve nailed down every positives and negatives I have with the game (and even preferences such as liking the rampage mode XD).
I’m glad you talked about the lack of DLCs seen in the older games, namely GU, which I consider a tradition in the series at this point. I was always excited to see what kind of crazy collabs they would bring into the new game which sometimes are pretty obscure stuff (to the west at least) like the GARO set from the titular Japanese tokusatsu show, Grandpa from the Grandpa Danger series and even original equipments inspired by real life brands like UNIQLO. There are also tons of special weapons, a lot of which are from anime like Zoro’s 3 swords from One Piece (certainly one of the best collab weapons ever).
So yeah, the collab feels extremely lacking in Rise with Capcom collab with itself (love that Obama pic XD). Although I have to give credit to the Akuma layered armour for its functionality! Otherwise, they’re all been pretty underwhelming like you said… Sonic collab is an improvement but it’s nothing special either, surely not something that makes me go “Wow! I have to get back into Rise and get this!!”. Heck, the Sonic costume for the Palico with the Caliburn sword looks way better than the thicc thighs Sonic costume in Rise (but points for how it can run with blurry feet, roll into a ball and turn into Super Sonic, very cool).
The lack of Nintendo collab is understandable…at first. Now that they’ve confirmed no cross save between the Switch and the PC version, they could have added the Nintendo collab in the Switch version (then they can add something else exclusively for the PC to keep things fair on top of how the PC community can just mod the heck out of the game anyway).
I appreciate the little topic like the Guild Card exchange, too. In the older games, as you have to join a room, you usually hunt with a certain group of people for a long time and you get to bond and earn their trust and respect in the form of their cards. I especially love doing this with the Japanese players as they are very formal and treat exchanging cards a very important deal, almost like in real life for the salarymen. But in Rise, you mostly join the random quest and have no time to interact with other players, especially when there are less cooperation in the hunts as everyone is practically a superman and just go off to do their own thing rather than working in a team. I don’t really feel the camaraderie anymore and feel less incline to exchange cards.
Another thing that I’m really glad you brought up, which almost no one else mentions and is one of my biggest personal gripes with this game is the monster intros. The horror, poem style intro is cool and all, but the lack of your Hunter in those intro is a big miss for me. I absolutely love the intros in 4U and World, seeing your Hunter interacting with the monsters and getting you hyped up for the fight. I also love to put on different armours or DLC costumes and rewatch all the intros. They should have done the same in Rise and keep the poem style intro separate, like an ecology video instead (speaking of which, whatever happen to the ecology video? Bring this back, Capcom!). The intro in 4U is my personal favourite as it does not only have action sequences but also comedic moments like when the Palico face up against Zamtrios. It also features other hunters in the scenes for arena based monsters like Akantor and Dalamadur - a feature they definitely need to bring back.
On a related topic, the cutscenes in Rise are pretty garbage, too. Not only are there very few of these cutscenes, they’re mostly consist of you just standing around talking to NPCs. They’re the most boring cutscenes ever and could have just been done as dialogues instead. The only action scene is that one you get chased by Magnamalo and that’s it, just you running away like a pussy. Your Palico and Palamute are also only in 2 scenes, the opening and ending…
    Anyway, great review!👍

And yes, GU’s monster intros are the worst. Even the intros from the very first MH game on PS2 are wayyyy better.

I reserve my final judgement of monster hunter rise until master rank arrives. So far, i am really loving it! This game has finally made me try other weapons i otherwise would have had NO interest in playing. Even in world, i didn't really venture out of my comfort zone with weapons, i dabbled in hammer only because of the sliding attack, that is addicting stuff. I've been a horn main since freedom unite and always stuck with what i knew.
Trying weapons like greatsword, hammer, gunlance/lance, and charge blade made me appreciate how well the weapons were balanced (except sticky ammo) and felt almost like an entirely new game because of it!
The only gripe i have about the new world games is the ability to restock at hunting camps. But i 100% understand the reason behind it, especially for newer players. Having to reset a quest for something as simple as forgetting to eat or grab a certain item you needed doesn't make it hard, just tedious.
A tiered system for low/high/master rank could apply here. Low rank you can restock anything you want, high rank you can only restock certain items and at master rank you can't restock at the tent at all except for food buffs.

The weapons have I frames mostly due to some of them required build up and getting flinched or hit out of them it can fustrate some people. An example is old Hunting Horn - many stopped playing it in G rank as when you did recitals or try to pull off your notes you either had to go defensive and run away from combat or get constantly flinched/hit out of the animation trying to pull off your combos. It's a aggressive weapon so having to stay on the edges of combat rendered you partly useless. While some complain about the Rise horn, it is 100% aggressive all the way through which is something the weapon should be. We'll find out how much this matters with Sunbreak, but I don't think you'll see a drop in HH users in G rank for the first time in the series.

@@Ed-1749 I've never known the other weapons to not have I frames either. Infact alot of them don't have as long a animation as the HH recital so you either don't get flinched as often or your really bad at timing with them in the older games if you couldn't take advantage of them. 4U even had I frames when you were lying flat after being hit in some cases to give you a small grace period as the second you started the getting up animation those I frames were gone.
When you got into the harder hunts you got less people using weapons with longer animations because the I frames didn't kick in fast enough to stop you getting knocked around and things like S&S, DB always had good ones hence why many people considered them great for beginners, especially in GenU.
Things like prowler didn't get as many I frames but your smaller hit box meant alot of monsters struggled to land hits if you got right underneath and under the legs and since blunt weapons tripped monsters in the older games you could cancel alot of attacks from them that way. I haven't noticed the tripping/toppling mechanic returning in Rise for blunt weapons but when everyone goes for the head to stun it's probably one that's under used if it is still a part of the game, but currently don't think so. (I couldn't get world to function properly on my pc - one day if I get a better one as I do own - so I spent probably way more time with GenU than what was probably healthy with solo weapon runs.)

In my opinion what i don't like about DLC is slow and steady growth of monetized content
    Examples:
-In world/Iceborne the only paid Layerd armor were the DELUXE EDITION ARMOR, also what is the POINT IN SELLING LAYERD ARMOR IN PIECES
-In GU you had old monster hunter music you can choose to listen to it and from iceborne you are pay for auditory nostalgia
Disclaimer: I don't blame developers for this and I play MONSTER HUNTER since 4U and still enjoy it now
WHAT I BLAME is the money hungry higher ups of CAPCOM seeing MONSTER HUNTER becoming a WARM DELICIOUS PIE and wanting more and more slices of It!
EDIT: I'm sorry but if we go with "it's just cosmetics" or "MONSTER HUNTER has a lot of content on it's own and DLC is just flavor"

True, Rise definitely feels easier than other MH games, but A. G rank is still missing, and B. last time I played the series I was 13, offline, and not the brightest tool in the tactics shed - so I'm taking my own experience with a grain of salt.

I'm with you on feeling like preplanning isn't required anymore and one of my favorite stories wouldn't be possible in current MH.
My friend and I are playing MH4U locally and we just took care of the Chameleos where we had to go in with no items. Well afterwards we immediately went onto another hunt without restocking and the only reason we cleared the hunt was because we both were IG users and bugs still did damage even though our weapons would bounce off of the monster. We also used getting the green extract from the tail to heal ourselves to stay in the fight. It took so much longer and we could have just abandoned the quest and gotten our equipment, but we decided to stay and see what would happen. We cleared the fight with just barely enough time to spare which was the last quest required to get into G-Rank. It felt so good!
Edit: I also want to add that I lucked out and never had to deal with the 2nd MH game syndrome, though it makes a lot of sense. My first MH game was MH3U on the 3DS and I did NOT have a Wii U. That meant I could only play local multiplayer and my friend group wasn't good enough to get past High Rank. I also was a DB main despite being bad with it. I tried all the other weapon types but nothing stuck for me. Then MH4U comes out and not only do I have access to online multiplayer but the IG is also introduced and I fell in love with the weapon upon using it for about 3 minutes. Everything clicked and not just because mounting was OP as I continue to use IG throughout the rest of my MH career.

Rise just feels short. That could be a combination of different reasons; be it from how cheap it is to craft gear, the fact that there's only one set of armor per monster, or how easily we body monsters due to how stronger we are in comparison so hunts go by quickly. Could even be because event quests aren't rotating on a schedule, like in World. It definitely can't be the lack of monsters and monster variety, as we have more in Rise than in base World, excluding the Apex variants in Rise AND the event/subspecies in World. Outside of everything else, the game is fun and enjoyable. I just hope Sunbreak brings back the more than one set of armor per monster and feels as big as Iceborne in terms of scale. Now I'm from the "Old World" of hunters, even going so far back as to -PTSD- Freedom Unite, but 4U being the title where the game "clicked" and made a MH Franchise SIMP. Rise is amazing! The movement and new monsters are insanely unique and fun af, but there's this unshakeable feeling that the game is short.

    Great review!
As a newcomer to the franchise I can see where you are coming from. I'm still grateful those changes were made as I always found monster hunter kind of intimidating in its mechanics (and sadly I don't have much time to play).
I do dislike the presence of soooo many paid dlcs and the fact that some rewards are kinda pointless.
Also I'm still a noob. I still don't feel confident enough to solo an apex, but I'm getting there.
I also bought world/iceborne and I can't tell you how many time I tried to wirebug out of the way only to say: oh s**t.

As a newcomer who refuses to look at guides, Rise is a good starting point. It's probably just a problem for veteran hunters, but every monster I faced gave me problems and I had to craft multiple weapons to find out which one worked, search for endemic life that could benefit me in the fight, and actually learn where to hit and know the monster's attack patterns.

@@kilnareth7970 Fully get you. My friend built like 9 armors and 15 different weapons in low rank, while veteran players prob rush trough lowrank with the beginner armor and only upgrade the bone/ore tree.
MH fandom really sometime forgets that Capcom wants to gain new audiences with new games 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@JodyrJoestar The problem here is that they just did. World was exactly that. And it worked perfectly. Capcom's most successful game ever.
They announced Rise as a return to the older style compared to World, a "veteran's" game, if you will.
But it isn't. I don't have any problems with the more streamlined, faster, casual style, but Rise is very clearly *not* a "return" to the old games. It's World with Hunter Arts and even more casual changes.
And while that's not inherently a bad thing, Rise was supposed to be... not that.

Great video. There's many amazing things and some short coming. A lot of potential, I hope we can see them fulfilled in Sunbreak. I do believe some people over blow things as you said when World came out people said it was too easy, same with Gen. The expansion mostly clear that up. But that's not me saying Rise isnt easier I think it is overall. The question if high/low rank should be easy is another thing that Capcom may need to address as a whole.
I think Rise does difficult very well in scaling up, definitely for new players. But I believe maybe the starting point, and the scaling of difficulty could be faster, and higher.
Compared to older MH games where the difficulty is generally at a start of rank till you get armour, then ease off till end of the rank when you get harder monsters.
Also good to see someone else loves Astral Chain.

While my first MH was Gen, i really do appreciate the small quality of life improvements. Unlimited pickaxe, rod, knowing where the monster is without a paintball and being able to pick up stuff without stopping is awesome. The game is for sure more easier but still not in the way that just anyone can pick up and play, you still have to learn as a new player and not just go all guns blazing on the first thing you see. Like the video said, it's different and i do like this new approach the franchise is taking
