  • While there are a lot of tests to get into college, there are no exit exams to get out. Despite the soaring price of tuition and the benefits a degree offers, researchers have found that undergrads often spend little time studying compared to other activities like working, socializing or partying. As a result, many show limited gains in critical thinking - the hallmark of American higher education.

Critical thinking is an attitude and the skills to approach it. It starts with parents with their kids when they are young and nurtured by parents and teachers through K-12. When our son was in uni, only one-third made it through engineering physics and I've heard that's normal. Colleges have weeders which get rid of a lot of students. Son's professor told the class that he didn't want any of them designing roads and bridges that he'd be driving on if they couldn't pass first-year physics. I imagine employers have a tough time interviewing new grads because they don't know if their courses were rigorous.
