Why Students Should Pursue College As A Place To "Learn How To Learn"

  • If we view the economic value of college based solely on the direct outcomes of post-graduation performance, then perhaps we're evaluating the investment based on incongruent objectives and misaligned time horizons. That is to say, my career-based decisions should be based on my career goals. As such, I should choose the best course of action to increase my likelihood of achieving them. For some, that might mean a college degree; for others, perhaps not.
If we only measure the value of college based on immediate value realization, then we likely ignore the long-term financial benefits that college provides, like the network.

I'm a university lecturer part-time and I literally just told my nursing students about the power of transferable skills this morning.. told them how I transited from being a doctor to a door to door sales agent (and back) because I wanted to acquire sales/people skills! 👑⭐⭐⭐

I don't think my school ever taught me how to learn. I learnt it from TH-cam.

But not everything on TH-cam is true. How do you learn to be critical with TH-cam?

From TH-cam - you are learning from other people’s experience. You apply what you believe will work for you or you can experiment the ideas shared. I have learnt a lot from youtube from experts - the application matters to learn and to retain information

@@Peter-mj6lz true but not everything from school and government is true as well, yes or no?

@@NoBullshitUThis is true as well but with uni I am being taught to critically think rather than just accept an opinion. I think it’s easy to not be taught this with TH-cam and then as you aren’t assessed, although you might be learning, I think it’s easy to miss what you might not be learning because you don’t have to prove what you have learnt. Like education institutions, you can easily be put into an echo chamber on TH-cam so you are just shown information that it thinks you are interested in rather than a wide range of information.

@@Peter-mj6lz yeah but US tuition is RIDICULOUS vs EU and other G7/G20 nations.
Oppenheimer himself went to Germany for advanced nuclear studies. Remember Germany developed without colonization and huge geographical advantages like USA.
USA universities attract best talents but it's only top 0.1%. Average K-12 and college qualities in the US are way below OECD.

I read an article from a prison professor saying prisioners are thr best students because they learn for the sake of learning. They are not learning for to check off a box for a job

Yeah it seem like you’re learning to be a more well rounded person, especially in the social sciences. Then you’re just like okay what’s next lol 😅 the challenge is packaging it and selling it to the world..

Really? Republicans weren’t the ones telling me in college the list of hundreds of words and phrases I cannot use,,,,,They also made up history in the name of inclusion constantly, thats why people get annoyed.. The libs turned every class into poly sci….
