    For an AGA game it doesn't look that good. It's on 7 disks and yet with all the small characters/sprites and stuff, there's like no background animations... just a couple or something, like lights, no people moving. Also crap sound quality and the music sucks. There's no intro or title music either. But if this is what's required to get the awesome speed this game has, then it's worth it. Compared to the other Street Fighter games on the Amiga, THIS one runs fast and smooth, 50fps, very high playability. Another awesome thing is CD32 gamepad support, 6 buttons can be used, like the arcade versions.
    I chose to play with Super Mode 'off', cuz I wanted the bonus levels. With Super Mode 'on' you get to fight against more characters, but the bonus rounds are left out. I just wanted to get through this game quickly anyway, so having it 'off' makes it quicker :P, ye, I'm lazy... and ye, I suck. Only did a couple of pratice rounds.
    This game runs in 50fps and alot of moves and stuff uses flickering to make the effects. I usually upload 50fps movies in 25 on TH-cam to keep it moving/scrolling smooth, but this time it has to be upped in 30, or alot of times stuff will go invicible or just ignore the effects of all the special moves etc. It will of course look like CRAP in 30fps, but it's better than 25. If you wanna see it in super smooth action with everything visible and all effects behaving like they should, download the source video.
    I didn't bother centering the screen while fighting, would have to cut the movie in many parts then, bleh. I added an extra fight at the end where I play in max speed.
    So, of all the available Street Fighter games on the Amiga, this is the best one imo, as to me, playability is king. Super Street Fighter II Turbo has CD soundtracks and killer graphics, but it plays like shit and tons of animation and stuff were left out. -

    For what it's worth, this was the best version of Street Fighter 2 on the Amiga. Base SF2 was an absolute atrocity, as was SSF2T, but this made all the right compromises to at least be playable. That being said, although the Amiga was unsuited to having big sprites, games like Elfmania and Shadow Warrior - despite their gameplay flaws (the developers simply had no competence in making fighting games) - showed that an accurate port of Street Fighter 2 should have been possible.

      Amiga had powerful 2D hardware, but it was very different to hardware found in arcades and home consoles. With proper use of Copper and other Amiga features it could run nearly flawless arcade quality port of Street Fighter. The only problem is that it required a skilled programmers that would implement every stage individually. Publishers would have to spend way more money than they would like on such port without any increased profit.
      Street Fighter brand would sell itself anyway. Also Amiga was heavily pirated platform, so high quality port wouldn't increase sales at all.

    • @juststatedtheobvious9633
      @juststatedtheobvious9633 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Did Shadow Warrior and Elfmania have 6 button controls for basic moves alone? Plus this many animation frames? How was the combo system? An AI that's not brain dead or out to just murder you?
      It's not just that the 2 developers lacked experience. This is a basic 512K RAM issue. The SNES and Genesis versions of Super Street Fighter 2 have near instant access to cart storage to get around the problem, which is great, because just one character would overload their RAM otherwise. The Sega CD, meanwhile, had twelve times the RAM of the Amiga, and still has to load characters between rounds for all its fighting games.
      So porting a version of Super Street Fighter 2 this playable, on a data format that limited, without turning everyone into an 8-bit style chibi sprite? It's bloody sorcery.

      The Amiga could move sprites mid scanline or perhaps even use blitter objects instead or in combination. Sure, overlapping sprites might become problematic, but otherwise it wouldn't be such a huge deal. There's actually an Amiga fighter that DOES look closer to something you'd expect on a 16 bit console or arcade even, and is relatively smooth, but the game itself is crap unfortunately.

      Most of these games
      a) were worked on by only one programmer, who
      b) almost always didn't have access to the original's resources and/or source code, having to recreate almost everything from scratch by eye and ear (and without nowadays' tools and techniques), and
      c) were given very limited development time (let alone testing) before deadline. In fact, on the words of various programmers from the era, several games from the 80s to early 00s were commercially released on beta (or even alpha) state.

    In my opinion even though the graphics are abit iffy, this version is 10 times better than the original Street Fighter 2 on the Amiga. Looks more solid gameplay wise, sound and voices are much better ( even the different tone of Ryu and Ken voices ) Also one thing I noticed is that the Shoryuken is not a charge move like it was in the original SF 2 for the Amiga with the hold down for 2 seconds than up and fire button motion. The player was executing it quite fast sometimes even while moving which leads me to believe they fixed it and made like the arcade motion. All in all it is a really decent and highly playable port from the looks of it

    I see a lot of negative comments here, but I don't think you are fully appreciating the context here…
    Producing fighting games on the Amiga was *not* easy, as shown by what had come before. The original U.S. Gold Street Fighter 2 conversion was utterly pathetic: a slow, ugly mess of a game with boring gameplay and music from hell.
    Other developers had tried (and failed) to make a decent Amiga fighting game, like Team 17's "Body Blows" which was a valiant attempt, but ultimately felt kind of cheap and hollow, and had nothing of the Street Fighter 'magic'.
    So when this game came out in late 1995 - by comparison to everything that came before, it was pretty amazing. It's the Street Fighter game Amiga owners had been waiting for - this was the "real deal", an authentic-looking Street Fighter game with fast, arcade-accurate gameplay. And despite the audio being slightly limited, it did actually feature all 16 of the level tunes, which for me was a major thumbs up.
    To my memory, the only Amiga fighting game that gave this a run for its money was "Shadow Fighter" by NAPS which had come out earlier in 1995. Shadow fighter was such a stunningly polished game, you could almost forget it was running on an Amiga. The game design was also top-notch, with some pretty decent original characters. (My favourite two were the 'cop' and the cat woman.)
    In terms of production, Shadow Fighter would probably win the award for "best Amiga fighting game". However, in terms of just being a great game and being packed full of charm, and having that authentic Japanese arcade feeling, then you really can't beat Street Fighter 2, and for me this conversion delivered the goods. :)
    Edit: Having declared Shadow Fighter as being graphically the best Amiga fighting game, I have since discovered the game "Elfmania" which I hadn't seen before. All I can say is wow - the graphics look like an arcade game and totally put all the Amiga Street Fighter conversions to shame.

  • @dlfrsilver
    @dlfrsilver 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    SSF2 or SSF2T were Games that needed configurations above what we got at this time. If you want to get a very good port of this game, you'd need a 68030 at minimum (let's say a 68040 to be honest), 32 mb of Ram, a hard drive, and good programmers able to port in ASM the engine logic from the coin-op. The amiga lacks hardware sprites, and also flexibility in its palette. SSF2T could have been the deal, but its game engine was ported from the PC version, which was coded in C and not ASM.

    • @Hankkillo
      @Hankkillo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      amiga has hardware sprites support and blitter for the bobs.This game does not need anything else than a 68000, the problem here was the chip memory (512k), and this issue could have been fixed with an ECS or AGA version.

      No, I'm too young to have owned an Amiga (born in 1991). My grandpa used to have one when I was younger (which I used to play with when at my grandparents' house, mostly doodling in DeluxePaint and watching the CPU play Poing because I sucked at it) but I think he chucked it out some years ago after all his Amiga mice broke.

      The Amiga tends to be overrated but it still deserves lot of credits, especially considering that its base hardware is from 1985 (as the Amiga 1000).
      Super Street Fighter II here is complete crap, just slightly less crap than the utter-crappy Amiga port of Street Fighter II.
      But there's one Amiga fighting game which pretty much shows what the system is trully capable of in the genre and that game is Shadow Fighter. In some ways, it puts to shame the PC Engine, a system whose base hardware is from 1987 and which couldn't handle parallax scrollings in most, if not all of its fighting games nor running them in proper resolution. Even worse when considering the SNK ports which needs the Super CD-Rom add-on (1991 hardware) and the arcade card (1994) in order to run and in comparison Shadow Fighter on Amiga still has several technical advantages!
      Only the Mega Drive and SNES outmatch the Amiga and even then, the SNES has inferior resolution which causes problems in some Amiga to SNES ports such as Pinball Dreams/Pinball Fantasies or The Chaos Engine.

    • @amanloop
      @amanloop 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shadow Fighter and Fighting Spirit are prime examples of SF-level fighters done right on the Amiga. If PCE can have a proper conversion, the Amiga can have one too. Look at MK2, not as good as it could be as if it were designed around A500's hw from the get go, only based on the MD port, but it's a faithful experience and an excellent game. SSF2 Turbo was AGA indeed and it was a turd. The version of SSF2 shown here is also the AGA version, not a bad effort. Even the somewhat inferior A500 version, gameplay-wise, plays more than fine with keyboard controls, allowing for full 6 fire buttons. Biggest fail here are the small sprites used, giving that cinemascope ratio, but at least it plays close to the arcade original and it's an enjoyable experience.

    Lots of comments as how the 1200 could do better. I'm dubious about that. Elfmania did look nicer but it was clearly designed with visuals as the priority. It was horrible to play and very shallow. Street fighter has a well loved combo system and mechanics that they've had to reverse engineer for the Amiga and they did an amazing job here, focussing on giving a true and smooth experience. This will have taken up a lot of processing power and I'm not sure people appreciate that. Mechanics should be the priority. The CD32 took the exact opposite approach it's an utter horror show.

    • @beezle1976
      @beezle1976 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's no 256 colors. It's 32 + 16 sprite colors.
      AGA is too slow and too low of chipram to do a game like this in 256 colors.
      64 colors + the 16 sprite colors is enough to make it look nigh on identical to the arcade though, which is more in the realm of possible.

    No, no it is not. It's about the graphics hardware, the ability to move sprites, display colours. A paltry 2MHz difference in CPU does not make the A1200 more powerful. A SNES has a ridiculously under powered CPU but is supported by great graphics hardware.

Shadow fighters proved amiga was able to handle a game like this with way better graphics (and paralaxe too, like the original SF2). Not to discredit the Amiga but I did get a better experience with the SNES home console, possibly because of the graphics, sounds and speed of the game. On a side note, aside from Eliza, who do you see Ken best with throughout the whole Street Fighter world from Alpha to 4?

      Sorry but THIS version is the AGA-only version. The OCS/ECS one doesn't support music and sfx at the same time, doesn't have the voice samples. Additionally, the life meteres and timers are place on the black border above the screen.

    An unoffical CD32 version exisits. Its called DX or somthing. Its the only way to play SFII on the Amiga. Theis version looks like crap but its playability is arcade perfect. The CD32 version apart from having improved backgrounds ( i couldnt tell the difference) eliminates the disk swap problem and was more stable than the HD install in my opinion.

    No Wait?! So,how different is this to the A500 OCS/ECS version?! I don't see any difference in the graphics or more colors really?! SSF2 Turbo on the CD-32 & AGA yes it looks a lot like the Arcade but this is more of a farce!

    The music is barely passable, which is a shame because the CPS2 shares a very similar soundchip with the Amiga. You can hear similar instruments but that's it. If they spent more time on this port the music could have been 1:1.

    @TechnoEstate This is supposed to run on A1200 machines. The A1200 had a Video Processor that was better than the Mega-Drive one. It's CPU was twice as faster as the Mega-Drive, and like 5 times faster than the SNES one. It had 2mb of ram, which is basically half the size of the SNES port of this game (I know in this case RAM wouldn't be used just to store the game, and that it probably have some compressed stuff, but still..)
    It's obvious it could be better. But you'd need good programmers.

      @@fungo6631 Agreed.
      Good programmers, proper deadlines and proper support.
      Mega Drive Street Fighter 2 was made by 18 guys in 9 months.
      Amiga Street Fighterr 2 was made by 5 guys in 6 months. Who were also making the Atari ST version at the same time.
      There's no way the Amiga had any chance.

    • @fungo6631
      @fungo6631 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rafaellima83 Actually they were likely tasked with the Atari ST port first, and then the Amiga port. It was common practice for Amiga games to be Atari ST ports with a few more colors and better sound.
      Fortunately Super Street Fighter 2 on the Amiga was a huge improvement playability wise.

    • @rafaellima83
      @rafaellima83 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fungo6631 I really think at that point they were given both at the same time. Both versions use the same assets but Amiga version makes proper use of the blitter and stuff. I think from 91-92 onwards they were doing the games at the same time or first on Amiga, many ST+Amiga games were beginning to use the Amiga hardware properly, even if sharing assets since graphics capabilities were similar.
