You talk so much about the Yorkshire biscuit tea that it fits right with the theme of the Podcast! 2. “Hot tea”, in modern parlance, connotes salacious gossip, which is perfectly fitting for reading a book to be in time to join in buzz and conversation. 3. Unlike boiled water in a kettle, once a cup of hot tea is made it cannot easily be reheated. Over-brewed tea will also become too strong and bitter, as listeners have already pointed out.
Raeleen will basically be like a modern-day Helen Hanff from 84, Charing Cross Road ! Giving out a list of books for a bookstore to find and them shipping them to her ! How cool !

Just had to mention that I listened to this while getting ready. Finished the podcast, left my room, and was like “what’s that???” What it was, was my poor forgotten iced coffee that I made before I went into my room. Now lukewarm and watery. A recommendation for Ariel-I haven’t read it myself yet, but was just recommended H is for Hawk. Based on the books you talked about in this episode, it sounds like a good fit. It’s a memoir about processing grief after their father’s death while also learning to train a hawk

Also the library scene here is great- except that Calgary libraries have experienced a cyber attack recently 😅😅 And we can not return or pick up the holds or sign into our accounts for the last 4 weeks or so 😅 Other than that, they have a great collection!
Definitely Pages! Pages also has awesome sister stores - The Next Page in Inglewood and Margins in High River. They're definitely the best spots to find good used books in the city/region.
I am a little behind on the podcast but just listened to this one & I had to come here to say WELCOME TO ALBERTA RAELEEN!! I have lived between Alberta & BC my entire life. Born in Edmonton, then moved to BC when I was around 4 after my parents divorced (Langley area maybe? lol). I have now been back in Alberta since 2007, in FtMac since Nov of 2010, so had now spent more years in AB than BC. (I was in BC from 4-13, AB 13-17, BC 17-18, back to Alberta when I was 19 till now). My mom still lives in Port Coquitlam & now my brother-in-law & his family moved to Chilliwack in 2020, so we are in BC usually at least one a year. This might be a good alternative, especially because this was mentioned in a recent episode: a Cranberry sauce book? It goes well with different types of food but it's typically only appropriate during Thanksgiving time. You can have cranberry sauce at any other time of the year but it's a little weird and off season if you do. It ties in to the podcast, in that Ariel made a delicious cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving, and also it's also a food that goes with mashed potatoes! (I know the poll is already up with the options but I think this might work for the usage you're going for while also distinguishing it from the "mashed potato" concept!)

Oh man the debate 😂 my second plug into the void for OVERBREWED BOOK ☕️You can leave your tea bag in there for too long and then the tea cold, the book isn’t in conversation anymore, it’s already diffused and then oversaturated, and you might even feel a little bitter about missing it while it was hot. ☕️

I just finished All the Beauty in the World on audio, read by the author. It was fantastic! It's a great companion/cousin book to Thunderclap: A Memoir of Art and Life and Sudden Death by Laura Cumming.
i can't remember if you've read them already, but Carrie Fisher's memoirs are the best of the best (and in audiobook form, phenomenally read by her -- and the last one was also read by billie lourd, her daughter, after carrie's passing). the books are "wishful drinking", "shockaholic" and "the princess diarist"
In the Biz recommendation: I recently listened to the audiobook for “World Within a Song” by Jeff Tweedy (lead singer/guitarist of Wilco) and I really enjoyed it. I was kind of a memoir told through meaningful songs in his life. Highly recommend!
I have a recommendation for Ariel! Combing her love for books like A Wild Snail Eating and George: A Magpie Memoir and her love of sports books I present to you Finding Gobi by Dion Leonard! It’s a book about a man running a multi day marathon in the Chinese desert when a stray dog starts running with him. The book goes through both the marathon side of the story and Dions struggles to adopt the dog back to the UK! I also love both of these book genres and it was the perfect combination of them both.

Recommendation for Raeleen’s In the Biz books - Did you hear about Kitty Karr is a novel with a focus on Hollywood. There are dual timelines and one is historical, I want to say 1950s-60s? It’s a fascinating book and well written. I read it earlier this year and I still think about it!
I recently read the lottery and other stories by shirley jackson and the edition i have is the little penguin clothbound edition and it is the perfect size for a book!
I have to say, Billy bookshelves look VERY leveled up if you get glass doors or cabinet doors (to do a mix of bookshelf and storage) to add to them. It really changes the look/feel of them. Good luck to you on your move!

I have lived in 3 countries in my life time. I was born in my home country but will probably die here in Canada since It is highly unlikely that I will ever be able to go back to my home country.
Also (sorry to comment more than once) but if you want a true crime story from the victim’s perspective, I suggest looking at Sophie’s Legacy by Leslie Elliot. Sophie Elliot was murdered by her boyfriend in my hometown in New Zealand and her murderer tried to get his sentence reduced by slandering her and saying she “provoked him.” The book is written by Sophie’s mother who now has a foundation to educate about domestic violence and healthy relationships. It’s very sad but I’m glad that her mother is still fighting for her legacy after her murderer tried to slander her.
A hot potato is something you want to get rid of - not something you're excited to read. Boiling kettle is hot and bubbling and in the moment - leave it too long and it'll go cold. This is the only and right choice. A cup of tea is too relaxing, it doesn't have the excited urgency of a boiling kettle. I understand wanting to stay with potatoes, but the metaphor doesn't work. Just my opinion :0)
Okay I realize we are past the collaborative stage with hot potato vs boiling kettle but what about party popper book? With party poppers they’re usually reserved for a specific occasion and thus there is that anticipation. There’s also a little bit of fear (in the case of the book being bad or in the case of the popper, it being loud). Also if you miss your moment and it’s just a total bummer
I don't know if this book is one of Raeleen's book type but i recommend "How Music Works" from David Byrne, the vocalist of The Talking Heads. The book has a nice introduction to the history and evolution of music, the impact of it, info about the art decision he took in the band (the iconic enormous gray suit), the producers that he has worked and known. In resumes I'll say that the book has a little bit of interesting facts about music and of course the industry. Think of him (David Byrne) as a nice cool dude who knows (and loves) a lot of details or aspects of music and likes to talk about it.
This comment maybe a bit of a “hot potato,” but this morning I was regretfully throwing away two sad avocados that had softened past their prime and thought, “that’s it!!” Maybe leave the potato analogy to the mashed situation and step over to the world of fruit! Waiting too long to read a recently released book is pretty similar to buying an almost ripe avocado, waiting too long to eat it and missing the window of ripeness. Also, while I’m here… this is ancient pod history now, but Ariel’s squirrel story was hilarious and reminded me of a time waiting for the bus in downtown Austin when a squirrel fell on me. Something thudded on my head and I exclaimed an expletive that turned a group of elderly women’s heads in my direction. The little guy slid down to my lap too shocked to go anywhere. So I gingerly scooped him up and set him under a bush. after a moment, he sped off towards a tree. I had no idea squirrels were so skinny! They are literally 70% fluff.

I just read the new one on Actor, Director and Producer Mike Nichols, (I don't know if you know who he was); he won 8 tony award for directing some big plays, He won an oscar He is also well known as a team with Elaine May they did improvisation and were the toast of broadway and very early late night tv shows. And a really good autobiography of Barbara Streisand. I'm not sure if either is your cup of tea, but they are both very fascinating, I listened to them audio,and I zipped through them.
Raelenn if you're interested in "the biz" you might love the podcast Glamorous Trash. The host reads celebrity memoirs (some modern but also many historical) and talks about them on the podcast!
Just fyi - Woman of the Hour is *very* loosely based on a true story. The spark of from a true story but the game show element is based on a serial killer that was on the Dating Game, but the bachelorette did not choose him (because she got bad vibes basically). (Rodney Alcala if people are interested)
If you end up loving Woman of the Hour you'll definitely LOVE Bright Young Women! I read it early this year and loved it and watched the movie a couple weeks ago and they go together very well
Hello! I’ve been listening to your podcast since the very beginning and I know that you two like books that follow “slightly unhinged” women and boy do I have a recommendation for you. I just finished this book called My Husband by Maud Ventura. It follows the point of view of this woman who is obsessed with her husband. She’s a very entertaining character to be in the mind of throughout the book, not very likeable in my opinion, but very intriguing. Anyway, that’s all I’ll say about it because I went into it not knowing anything and I think that’s the best way to read it! Cheers 😊
For movie/arts books you really have to read Mark Lanegans Read Backwards and Weep!! It is a gem of memoir where no real connection to the author is necessary to enjoy it. He has such a brilliantly clear writing voice and approaches incredibly difficult topics of addiction, violence, grief and homelessness with a great deal of humor and humanity. The author was the singer of a Seattle band called the Screaming Trees and has also had a prolific solo career, and has great insight into the music scene at the time (he was a close friend to both Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley). Any interest in the grunge era of music is a bonus but its honestly just a wonderful book! It has become the one all other memoirs and biographies are measured against for me. Pro tip with roller rinks- look to see if they have adult only nights. I have nothing against kids but it can be a little scary for beginners if there are a ton of kids around as you get afraid of knocking into them. Also, make sure your wheels are indoor wheels (if you have the wheels your roller skate came with they probably are) because outdoor wheels don’t always work on roller rink floors. Have fun!
I posit that tea is not necessarily solitary - tea parties, simple visits with friends, etc - but it can be. Which fits for the metaphor, because you can read a hot book because you want to for yourself, or you can do it to discuss with others

Potatoes are THE Books Unbound thing. If there's not a potato involved, then it just seem so off brand. Mashed potato, big potato, etc have been mainstays. A new potato is a must, I think. Personally, I'd have gone with French fried potatoes. You always want to eat those hot and fresh. Re-heated fries are always horrible. Of the ones given, however, it has to be the potato choice.
In my opinion, the term "hot potato" is eternally associated with the game. Try as we might, we will always have to actively redirect our thoughts to think of a new meaning. Personally, I like "tea book" :)

I don't know if this book is one of Raeleen's book type but i recommend "How Music Works" from David Byrne, the vocalist of The Talking Heads. The book has a nice introduction to the history and evolution of music, the impact of it, info about the art decision he took in the band (the iconic enormous gray suit), the producers that he has worked and known. In resumes I'll say that the book has a little bit of interesting facts about music and of course the industry. Think of him (David Byrne) as a nice cool dude who knows (and loves) a lot of details or aspects of music and likes to talk about it.
This comment maybe a bit of a “hot potato,” but this morning I was regretfully throwing away two sad avocados that had softened past their prime and thought, “that’s it!!” Maybe leave the potato analogy to the mashed situation and step over to the world of fruit! Waiting too long to read a recently released book is pretty similar to buying an almost ripe avocado, waiting too long to eat it and missing the window of ripeness.
Also, while I’m here… this is ancient pod history now, but Ariel’s squirrel story was hilarious and reminded me of a time waiting for the bus in downtown Austin when a squirrel fell on me. Something thudded on my head and I exclaimed an expletive that turned a group of elderly women’s heads in my direction. The little guy slid down to my lap too shocked to go anywhere. So I gingerly scooped him up and set him under a bush. after a moment, he sped off towards a tree. I had no idea squirrels were so skinny! They are literally 70% fluff.
Congrats on your first move, I am a veteran of many moves, enjoy your new place, have fun and explore it. I have read a few in the biz books, is a bio ok? I just read the new one on Actor, Director and Producer Mike Nichols, (I don't know if you know who he was); he won 8 tony award for directing some big plays, He won an oscar He is also well known as a team with Elaine May they did improvisation and were the toast of broadway and very early late night tv shows. And a really good autobiography of Barbara Streisand. I'm not sure if either is your cup of tea, but they are both very fascinating, I listened to them audio,and I zipped through them.
I think 'Whistling kettle' would maybe give it a more romanticised and catchy name
Okay, but what about hot fries? Stays consistent with the potato theme and fries are famously unreheatable.
I just finished the Lisa Marie Presley memoir and recommend it.

Raelenn if you're interested in "the biz" you might love the podcast Glamorous Trash. The host reads celebrity memoirs (some modern but also many historical) and talks about them on the podcast!

Just fyi - Woman of the Hour is *very* loosely based on a true story. The spark of from a true story but the game show element is based on a serial killer that was on the Dating Game, but the bachelorette did not choose him (because she got bad vibes basically). (Rodney Alcala if people are interested)
If you end up loving Woman of the Hour you'll definitely LOVE Bright Young Women! I read it early this year and loved it and watched the movie a couple weeks ago and they go together very well
What about a Hot Tea book? That keeps the snappy element of Hot Potato but has Ariel’s idea too

Hello! I’ve been listening to your podcast since the very beginning and I know that you two like books that follow “slightly unhinged” women and boy do I have a recommendation for you. I just finished this book called My Husband by Maud Ventura. It follows the point of view of this woman who is obsessed with her husband. She’s a very entertaining character to be in the mind of throughout the book, not very likeable in my opinion, but very intriguing. Anyway, that’s all I’ll say about it because I went into it not knowing anything and I think that’s the best way to read it!

For movie/arts books you really have to read Mark Lanegans Read Backwards and Weep!! It is a gem of memoir where no real connection to the author is necessary to enjoy it. He has such a brilliantly clear writing voice and approaches incredibly difficult topics of addiction, violence, grief and homelessness with a great deal of humor and humanity. The author was the singer of a Seattle band called the Screaming Trees and has also had a prolific solo career, and has great insight into the music scene at the time (he was a close friend to both Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley). Any interest in the grunge era of music is a bonus but its honestly just a wonderful book! It has become the one all other memoirs and biographies are measured against for me.

Pro tip with roller rinks- look to see if they have adult only nights. I have nothing against kids but it can be a little scary for beginners if there are a ton of kids around as you get afraid of knocking into them. Also, make sure your wheels are indoor wheels (if you have the wheels your roller skate came with they probably are) because outdoor wheels don’t always work on roller rink floors. Have fun!
Why not call them French Fry books! You can reheat them if you want, but they are never as good as the first heating…and they are still potatoes!!

I posit that tea is not necessarily solitary - tea parties, simple visits with friends, etc - but it can be. Which fits for the metaphor, because you can read a hot book because you want to for yourself, or you can do it to discuss with others

Potatoes are THE Books Unbound thing. If there's not a potato involved, then it just seem so off brand. Mashed potato, big potato, etc have been mainstays. A new potato is a must, I think.
Personally, I'd have gone with French fried potatoes. You always want to eat those hot and fresh. Re-heated fries are always horrible. Of the ones given, however, it has to be the potato choice.
In my opinion, the term "hot potato" is eternally associated with the game. Try as we might, we will always have to actively redirect our thoughts to think of a new meaning. Personally, I like "tea book" :)

I think the "Hot Potato" term works better, because it begets another term: "Reheated Potato": a book that was a hot potato once upon a time, but you didn't read it at the right time.
For "in the biz" books I recommend My Thoughts Exactly by Lily Allen.
I’m torn. Ariel sets a good scene with the tea kettle but I am so devoted to potatoes for branding purposes 🤣

John Buchan’s sister, Anna was an author in her own right, publishing under the pseudonym O. Douglas. While John was writing thrillers, she was writing cozier domestic fiction about women living quiet lives in small Scottish villages. A couple of John’s grandchildren were writers, too. Quite the family.
I know we are only choosing between Hot Potato and Boiling Kettle, BUT I think Potato Fondue would be the perfect meeting of both worlds...
