    What am I doing in an SUV?? I'm testing out a brand new sleep system for vanlife that will work for virtually any vehicle. Elegear sent me a self inflating camping mattress to test out and review for you all, and I decided to use the opportunity to see if I'd be able to sleep in a smaller/different rig in case I need a mobile car camping. If so, this will open up a whole new world of travel and car camping possibilities for me in the future, and enable me to start taking much further trips soon!!
    Would you like to see me do a no build SUV camping setup on a future video?? Let me know below!

      Thanks so much!! I definitely want to try a setup in this - and my dad mentioned afterwards that the 60/40 split can go either way, so I wouldn't have to move the driver's seat, I could just keep the passenger seat up and still be able to utilize the driver's seat with the bed in place!

    Hi Heather, I think this is a BRILLIANT idea! I would love seeing you car camping in Daddy's car! I think the matress is WAY too big! Unless I misunderstood, no way you can get that on an airplane. I was wondering too can you manually blow it up if inflator breaks, cause ya know it will. How about just getting an egg carton, then just donate when you go home or like another commentor a five dollar blow up bed. You could just donate that too. More room for other more costly items. Dont even transport a bed back and forth. Thank you Heather! This is gonna be fun! 👍

    • @HeathersHikesAndAdVANtures
      @HeathersHikesAndAdVANtures  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's a great tip about the egg crate, and you could always donate it afterwards! I do agree that it's still bulky for packing, but I like the idea of having a portable bed system I can reuse, since I hope to travel this way multiple times, and I would hate to have to deal with getting something and disposing of it every time. I may still have to consider more of a backpacking/lightweight sleep pad still.

    When I was homeless, I used a pool float as a mattress in my Mazda 3. For a little over $5, you can get a float and air pump (comes with a bag of party balloons). Blow it up about 85% and it will last a week or so, maybe longer. Too much air and it’ll be prone to leaks. Cheap and compact.

    We think the same way. I am creating a to go setup because long distance driving across the country is not the best option for me. So renting a vehicle with basic gear is ideal. That air mattress seems cool. However, not ideal for packing for me. I have a backpacking air pad and sleeping bag. I would definitely use the one you used for everyday local trips because it takes up less room in my vehicle. My current trifold takes up a lot of space but it works. I bet if you did a video showing that setup, it would be easy and quick with way more space.

    • @HeathersHikesAndAdVANtures
      @HeathersHikesAndAdVANtures  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, I definitely think the backpacking air pad would be better for packing/travel purposes - even though it doesn't take up a ton of space, it takes up more than I'd like when rolled up. But I think I might even like using it in my minivan as a more simple setup. It's so fast and easy and lightweight - I could see it working in your SUV!

    Girl you’re brave!
    I want to hike the Rockies but I’m renting a car and a tiny (tiny tiny) home… too scared to be in a car so far from home. I would need a place with a toilet and shower
    I guess unless i plan waaaayy in advance the campgrounds that have those facilities.
    I dunno… I just don’t feel that brave 😅
    Maybe next time

      The Rockies! Sounds like an awesome trip. I did my first car camping trip at a park I had been to dozens of times and that wasn't too far from my home base in case I wanted to bail in the middle of the night. I was so nervous, but I ended up sleeping great & having a wonderful time. You'd be surprised at how quickly it gets comfortable and less scary! 💚💚

    Yes, I would love to see a car camp out in your dad’s SUV. I also had an idea on how to flatten the mattress pad further if you could put it in one of those big vacuum pack bags and then suck the air out. I’m sure it would take it down. Maybe flat enough to go in a suitcase.

    • @HeathersHikesAndAdVANtures
      @HeathersHikesAndAdVANtures  หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's at great idea to get it into a suitcase without taking up so much room, I bet it would compress quite a bit further that way!

    I'm not trying to be negative but I don't see that working for you because it's going to cost a lot of money , then you will not have your fridge,and when you rent a car you have to be careful were you are going and the miles that you use

    • @HeathersHikesAndAdVANtures
      @HeathersHikesAndAdVANtures  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your thoughtful feedback, but it's actually the only affordable way for me to travel to further destinations. I can't afford hotels and airbnbs, and I can definitely go without a fridge or power station for temporary trips like that, so I would actually need very little else now that I have a sleep setup. I've done a lot of research over the past 2 years on this, and know several other people that have had wonderfult
      feedback on their own trips where they camped in rented vehicles at destinations they flew to and they were able to save a ton of time and money
      It was much cheaper than it would be any other way.
      And it's the one and only way it would be possible time-wise for me since I'm not able to take off my other responsibilities for weeks at a time right now.

      @@HeathersHikesAndAdVANtures yes I get that again I was not trying to be negative I was just pointing out points and it would probably work if you didn't take a lot of things with you you also got to remember if you take a rental car off-road or something like thaoff-road and the mileage just a thought 🤔
