Helmet was such an under rated band from the 90s they kicked ass on every song. They deserve more recognition than What they ever got. Still some of the most awesome riffs to listen to 30 years later.
Helmet are revolutionary insane tight rhythm and proto polyrhythms math metal I can see influence on Meshuggah imagine if they had multi range guitars !!
Page is a monster guitarist. At first, he doesn't sound like your basic uber-technical prog metal guitarist, but if you listen closely he uses a lot of tricky jazz chords and weird King Crimson-ish sounds.
I hate when people compared Helmet to “Nu-Metal”. Sure they use heavy “chugga chugga” riffs but this is a really, smart, aggressive, band who understands the space between the notes. They’re total noise rock nerds. I would compare them to bands like Unsane, Melvins, Season to Risk, Glazed Baby, the Jesus Lizard, etc.
Helmet has been one of my top 5 bands of all time since age 15 (1992). They continue to be, and their first three albums (especially Meantime) hold up very, very well. Give It is one of the best tracks on Meantime and that’s a very high standard. Just saw them live a couple of weeks ago (Nov 2019)for the first time in 22 years and Page is still brilliant. Thanks for posting this video.
I was also 15 in '92 and Give It was always my favorite track on Meantime. I still crank this album and it still feels as fresh as it did almost 30 years ago.
Of the 40,000 albums sold, I bought two. Tape and CD...damn, what a great one it was! I appreciated the nod to Sonic Youth in his list of influences. It was a surprising revelation but interesting in that the SY were my favorite band and Helmet was a very close no. 2.
Page is an awesome guy too. He knows his music despite the simple riffs. I took a bit of guitar lessons with him. He certainly has inspired me in more ways than one. Hope to see him in concert this year!
The greatest metal grunge crossover unique band of the late 1990s and early 2000s....some songs have so me make you think messages too ...food for thought....OK mid to late 1990s but songs still would re-release today and be a hit....both albums Helmet and Betty "underknown" in my opinion.
I forgot Eric Bogosian was in this. Wrote a lot of what I guess would be termed alt-theatre works and more. Saw his "Pounding Nails In The Floor With My Forehead" at Oberlin College. Very cool dude. In a video for a very cool band. 😊💙🖤✨
This album is tops already. One of the first albums I learned to play guitar front to back. But the fact that Eric Bogosian is in it just ranting and destroying everything makes this even better.
I also hate how today's metal crowd identify things and throw everything from the 90s up until early 2000s into nu metal. I like those bands just not how they are labeled. When I heard Helmet we just called it Alternative Metal.
YES! YOU ARE RIGHT! Tv, and film needs someone to prove that there is such a thing as an unscripted, non rehearsed, unsupervised, natural, and spontaneous interjection possible in the medium!
This whole album rules.
Betty's better.
@Butt Whole Aftertaste's best stfu young me, it's the only thing you'll be listening to in the next month.
@@BusinessZeus This album is so much better. It's not even close.
I have this album on record
@@davidporter671 Everyone has their opinions. I always liked Betty more.
This whole album was on constant rotation back in ‘92. Such a killer band.
This whole album is still on my constant rotation
Yes.
I was 19, and when I first heard them, I was blown away. So tight.
Helmet wasnt just some weird nu metal cross over shit ... it's totally GRUNGE ! they belong into the grunge heaven right next to NIRVANA
This band rocks hard.. and without any pretentious bullshit.
Currently trying to wean off alcohol to this song and drink no more. Self-Help, Confidence.
Удачи тебе брат. 👍
Keep it up. It's worth your overall health 🤘🏾🎶🧡

Helmer & melvins too.good .❤
Bruh. Helmet is my favorite band, their discography is fulla bangers!!! Check out bands called Quicksand, the toadies, and crowbar!!!
@@SCOODAMcGOODABru same
It's his voice & singing.
This whole record was killer to skate to!!! Sophomore year, skated to and from school..
I love how the riff at the end is in the whole tone scale. You rarely hear that in rock music.
Page is an extremely schooled musician..don't let him fool you.. LoL
Helmet are revolutionary insane tight rhythm and proto polyrhythms math metal I can see influence on Meshuggah imagine if they had multi range guitars !!
Damn right man. That riff really holds the song together.
Page is a monster guitarist. At first, he doesn't sound like your basic uber-technical prog metal guitarist, but if you listen closely he uses a lot of tricky jazz chords and weird King Crimson-ish sounds.
He studied Jazz guitar for crying out loud. He is a musical genius.

The guys in the band were very influenced by jazz .
The only thing Helmet has in common with Nu Metal is you can bounce to it. And when in a crowd, the bounce is god.
worm skull spot on! 🤟🏻
Great comment. Page Hamilton played in Glenn Branca's guitar orchestra and used his concept of brutal minimalism for Helmet.
Well said worm skull. Rad to see a Glazed Baby and Jesus Lizard name drop. Two of my favorite bands, less known bands, from that era.
Highschool early 90's....sick times
Eddie Guerrero That's right!
Right
Damn right!
Skate music
I remember blasting this in the 90s too, in the car on the way to Downtown (without Julieeeee Brown though)

Same here ! This track made Me a HELMET fan in 1992!
I just saw them in 2022 open up for KoRn! Are their more recent albums any good?
What else should I listen to?
that chunky bass
Check out Royal Blood if you think this bass is good ...
George Paine Henry Bogdan. Legend

Masterpiece of all times.this album rules
helmet riffs rock frickin hard
Who else is here because they had this back in the day and still owe BMG or Columbia House a full length album purchase?
Bro. I feel seen.
Eric Bogosian moshing to Helmet = pure uncut awesome
Helmet is just one of those Bands 🔥❤
Why does this only have 142k veiws. Mind blowing. This is some of their best stuff.

The MEANEST track by these guys. Love it to no end.!! Hard as Hell...
you never listened to Betty, I see
First hearing and seeing these musicians floored me. Different. Badass and fucking amazing. Keep it hard..😊

Such a swaggering, unfiltered, straight to the point kind of song. That's why I love Helmet. Alt Metals best answer to the 90's.
A Craft Metal band. They ROCK.
one of the best albums I've heard
we dont need more cable more modems we need to go back to the 90s and have good music like this in our lives with confedence
I like how it's 2020 and I'm seeing this for the first time. Thanks MtV! :(
Was definitely on headbangers ball rotation
Their sound is perfect and ahead of it's time, right
One of the overlooked

Helmet is badass to the max!!!

Jazzy (and gizz in my pants) Alternative Rock!
You can tell Helmet were a huge influence on Silverchair
Agree. Media had no idea in saying they were Nirvana wannabes lol
😀😃😀
They were also a big influence on Therapy? Quicksand, Kerbdog and Reuben
silverchair were just nirvana lite
