  • Aprilia has entered the ultra-competitive Adventure-Touring market with guns a-blazing with the new Caponord 1200. Boasting possibly the most advanced production motorcycle suspension to date, Features Editor Troy Siahaan was at the U.S. launch in Prescott, Arizona to put the bike through its paces.

I have one in my garage right now. Dropped off my Multistrada for an oil change after a 3000 mile ride through the Rockys. The Aprilia is a very impressive bike once I figured out the suspension. I was very impressed with the torque at low revs but I can't say it really compares with the Multistrada in performance. It is more comfortable but the missing 50 horsepower is immediately noticeable on corner exits and onramps. I'm not going to flog a demo bike but it definitely runs out of wind long before redline. Published dyno runs bear this out.
The Caponord quickly builds confidence but simply cannot corner as hard as the Ducati. It would turn but needed to be pushed to do it and peg meets pavement before you expect it to. Would probably feel better on really tight roads where speeds stay in the 50s.
This bike would make a great commuter, comfy and torquey. The exhaust and intake combine for a satisfying note. The Caponord would make an excellent fast tourer in the hands of a responsible adult. It's just not the right one for me :-)
-and a quick postscript; the "code" (check engine?) light came on as I was sitting at a traffic light just arriving home. Need to see what that's about before riding it back to pick up my Duc.

I didn't say above, this Capo is a loaner. (Eurosport in Ft Worth rocks!)

Hey Troy . . 'Like your review, but just a couple of corrections on you CRUISE CONTROL [CC] outline, and some of my own impressions on the CC.
As a [very happy] owner [who test rode the Multistrada 3 times before buying the CAPO] I found that the Cruise Control button / setting is one of those functions that become second nature once you've had a few decent rides on the bike.
I'm really happy with the CC and find that the big twin easily regulates the set speed in response to inclines and downhill sections.
I never need to use my left hand . . . it's just a case of working out how to best use own right hand grip to activate the button, and once 'engaged', it's easy to set the speed you've chosen to cruise on.
You mentioned that you need to be doing 60mph before you can set it. That's incorrect. As a professional reviewer you need to get your facts straight before you publish a review.
You can set the CC from 3rd gear as low as 31mph . . . from their it's a sliding scale . . . ie: set in 4th gear from 37mph and so on.
You CAN accelerate with the CC set in 3rd gear and above with an upper limit for each gear [at which point the CC is temporarily deactivated. EG: in 6th you can set the CC from as low as 43mph [why would you want to?] and accelerate up to 111mph before that speed will deactivate the CC. You really wouldn't need to have CC set at over 111mph.

I have put 20K on my Caponord in less than a year and everything about it fantastic... safe, tough and fun to ride with only scheduled maintenance needed.
    (Highly recommended)

Still owning it? How's it after years of usage? Is it a money pit? Or still good?

Interesting... it appears to share some parts with the Stelvio. The windscreen adjusters and mount points look very similar.

Likely, Moto Guzzi and Aprilia are both part of the Piaggio group

Great little film that was very informative. But it looks like it was shot s-log and someone forgot to color grade. Too many shots are very flat and need correction.

It is what it is, it's no Ducati Multstrada but it's not Ducati Multstrada money either, it's a fun capable genuine do it all motorcycle, I guess 'you pays your money and you takes your choice', personal I've had a lot of different bikes over the years and still have a zx10r in my garage but take the Capo out all the time, I love it.

Did you have any problems with Caponord? Some people say it's thirsty on fuel...

@@maxster10 Hi, no problems as yet, only done a few thousand miles or so up till now but I've been impressed with the bike, I'm a sports bike rider really but the aprilia caponord is a very good all round usable bike and as for the fuel consumption it obviously depends on how you use it, the same as anything else but it seems to average about 10 miles per litre or about 45 per gallon, hope this helps.

@@maxster10 Hi again, mine has just gone 25,000 miles, and the service icon is now showing on the dash so it's due it's second major service, I'm the second owner the first one having had it from new and selling it on at just over 20,000 miles with no problems, I have a mate who has had one from new and i think he's is at about the mid to high 20,000 mark again with no major problem's but has for machines with higher milage I guess you'd be better off checking out one of the Aprilia forum's for any info regarding that.
