I knew Bruce. He was a real craftsman and a super guy. I have one of his regen receivers. N5SRA

How sad, I didn't know Bruce was gone. Great guy, and a great creator of equipment.

I’ve had similar problems with a couple of transmitters. One amateur and one commercial. The problem turned out to be a shorted plate choke, That coil showed absolutely no visible sign of damage. In fact it looked perfect. However it wasn’t keeping RF from the PA from disappearing back into the power supply. Just a thought.

Hard to believe the RF output erratic with steady plate current. It does not have parasitic suppressors on the 807s, would that be a clue ?
I have a Ranger I bought FWT in 1954, still operating.

Did you check for cold solder joints on or around the tuning cap? As to the 40 watt output that's more than likely soft 807s. It is a nice homebrew rig and an easy repair for whoever ends up with it.

I have 3 1kw 1kv dc power supplies I never finished putting together because I can't find a circuit plan or parts to finish making a hamset . Paid peter dahl co to make all the coils for me 10 years ago and they sit in my shop never hooked up once since factory. Still need 3 more 866GE tube sockets and everything on the modulator side. I'd like to play with some LF for long range.
