    0:45 - I can't think of a better place to dump fuel than over New Jersey. No one will be able to tell the difference.

    I had one of those "where'd the floor go" moments flying a little Cessna 172 into Goodland Kansas. Mostly sunny day but the wind was harsh, like 20 k and really gusty. As I'm on final and descending at about 400 feet above ground the plane just starts to plummet as my airspeed goes from 80 to 50 in an instant--I was keeping it fast exactly because of the gusting but this was something new to me. It was enough my passenger, who was not a newbie to flying, was clutching on to the ceiling and door for dear life. Well, the thing about little planes, when you have 400 feet to work with, it's enough to get out of almost (almost!) anything. A little power, wait a few seconds for airspeed to return, and then we have a rather bumpy landing.
    I went in to the FBO and looked at the weather station dials. Yep...that explains it... The wind was about 20 knots and was literally (I ain't kidding, literally) sweeping at that speed from directly lined up with the runway to being 140 degrees the opposite. Back and forth like that, while also going from 20 to 30 knots and back again.
    I few minutes later we'd joined the group of people watching the landings outside and a commercial 18-seat Swearingen commuter comes in and the dancing and ultimate porpoising that thing did landing had to have terrified the passengers more than I did mine.
    After watching another half dozen landings and attempts at landings I decided I did pretty damn well, all things considered.

    The nose drop was intentional. Any down drafts would cause the aircraft to sink without having any noticeable affect on the attitude of the aircraft.

    • @ryannfodrea632
      @ryannfodrea632 ปีที่แล้ว

      The nose drop was intentional yes because he had a cross head wind and ground effect to deal with. Still caused him to come in too steep on the first try causing him to go around. Wind is probably barely within landing limits.

    turn on CC at 2:06 and you read about the aircraft as 'starbucks a380'....nice, i love their cofee and i'm sure i'll love their airline too !

  • @bertg.6056
    @bertg.6056 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The nose dropping was due to control input, not a wind gust.
    I've flown on A380's out of Frankfurt airport and you can actually take a stroll on that airliner, and do stair climbing exercises to ward off DVT.

    2:35 "Very foggy conditions'?? Seems like he rotated (could still see 1/4 to 1/2 mile over to the terminal), and then climbed at least to 100ft or more before flying into the bases. {but I suppose video of a true 600ft RVR would be pretty dull}

  • @mtm4a

    Good content.
    This may be a naive question, but if the 777 dumping fuel at a low level at 0:39 happened to pass over an open fire or similar conflagration on the ground, would it be possible for the fuel spray to conduct the flames up to the plane with disastrous consequences?
    Also, the oscillation of the A380 at 1:34 was surely a pilot-induced wing-wave rather than weather-induced turbulence?

    0:40 Seeing this plane dump fuel. My house is about 3-4 miles east from an "outer marker" (those that follow aviation videos know about these). From the outer marker, the planes either continue east to an airport about 10 miles east of here, or they go northeast to an airport 15 miles northeast of my house. Anyway, it all started about the same time as the pandemic, but the house will suddenly reek of gasoline (lasts about 10 minutes). This happens about 3 or 4 times a week, but planes, for whatever reason are dumping fuel.

    When planes dump fuel, I wonder what impact that has for the surrounding areas. And I think the plane companies should be fined for that . I get they do it for emergencies but it’s still gasoline. What if I pumping gas, gas falls out of the sky & it sparks a reaction?

    • @josh3771
      @josh3771 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It won't, it vapourises and not a big issue. Airline ready copz an expensive lesson in wasted fuel. Far safer and environmentally friendly for all involved than the overweight aircraft exploding into a fireball on landing
