@@giocommentary the Manga of shuzo oshimi usually follows a two arc structure. The first arc is bizarre and out of place. In aku no Hana. It is essentially the exaggeration of the author's teenage years and to a extent the teenage year of all of of us. We felt out of place and didn't know what to do. We started to get interested in opposite gender. We felt trapped. We wanted to be special, so I agree that the artstyle would work really well in the first arc, but in second arc. I remember back in 2013, I watched the anime for the lols, because of the meme that it was bad. I ended up loving it, the story and the artstyle, when I began reading the manga after it, I was even bummed that it didn't look like the anime. I also read it a year after finishing high school, so it was a surreal experience. It made me introspect hard on my entire school life, and made me self aware of my behaviour during that time. It's pretty sad, but Kasuga was a very relatable character for me, the concept of him wanting to fawn over his crush at a distance, paradoxically wanting to be with them, but also wanting nothing to do with them. Not wanting the image you have of them, or the situation you're in to alter, an aversion to get close because of your own lack of self worth, and a fear that you will "diminish" them with your presence. I wasn't a very smart kid, it was works like this that made me reflect more in general, and it gave a stupid amount of perspective on my life up until that point, so I'm grateful for it.

Wish i saw this video earlier. I desperately want more of the anime as well it had such an incredible atmosphere, but the amount of money required to rotoscope honestly takes some of the sadness away from not getting more cuz a normally animated flowers wouldn't feel good
I don't read manga, but Aku no Hana is so far the only one I own because the anime had me so hooked so hard, I had to know the ending. But I recently bought the anime on blu-ray because I love it for a completely different reason. I'm a fan of the history of rotoscope, and I love that the anime unapologetically makes you confront the simplicity of the drawings, the roughness, and reality that it was actors that were drawn over. Rotoscoping has been gaining more popularity, not not used to engage in such personal moments as the anime. It's extremely effective if the audience had just let go and embraced that awkward aesthetic, because it puts you in the feeling of the story as well. The filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky described cinema as a "mosaic made with time", and that's what the anime does so well too: the pacing of moments, and the length of shots goes on for a noticeable amount of time, another effort to push the audience to think about the spaces of time and not just the story, but that the pacing is part of the story. In short, I think the anime is brilliant. Damn shame the one incomplete season is all we'll get. Just imagining what it would have looked like adapting the rest of the story. So many possibilities. Too bad.
I wish I had seen it before I made this video so I could mention it, but I'd recommend On-Gaku: Our Sound. A completely rotoscoped movie about punks turned amateur musicians with some fantastic explosions of the animation going super hard.

It's not for Everyone, do you have the Willpower? In the end of the manga even Kasuga it's portrayed depressed/lost and i think with medication 😷😵💫 I wonder why 🎃
You've given me an interest in this series, so I was wondering if you suggest watching the anime then continuing on to the manga or just reading the entire manga? Great video either way.
The anime does really well at adapting the manga to the point that it actually expands on some moments. Can't think of anything that got cut. Do know that when you hit the last episode and it starts recapping, leave and go to chapter 20 before it starts hinting at things to come to avoid spoilers.
Your section about the anime was pretty interesting. I also disliked the animation from what I saw and subsequently never really watched, but maybe that was just me being close minded. Since it's one of my favourite mangas I should really give it a watch with an open mind. That being said, the argument that it was disliked simply for trying something new stylistically isn't the full picture, otherwise shows like ping pong would also be looked down upon for the same reason, yet ping pong is acclaimed. From what I've seen, the Aku No Hana anime genuinely just looks bad. Though I'll give it a fresh outlook when I go into my viewing of it.
I get why someone, like you, would dislike the way it looks. It's a hard ask to say "like this thing intentionally designed to make you feel off." It's going to bounce off a lot of people. But I just ended up liking what it's going for and what it does. But yeah, thanks for watching the video.
I HATE that most people's response to 'haters' of the anime, is that the only reason people don't like the anime is because of the rotoscoping. they never mention that the pacing sucks in the anime. and Kasuga is always sweating and insufferable. way way worse than the manga..... I'm just blabbering, but tl;dr the anime had awesome tone, and style, but the story did not unfold properly. I dont care.. read the manga. way better. I love it. bye.
Well, that's because it's all what they complain about. Seriously, go take a look at the myanimelist thread at the time, the only thing they care about it's the aesthetic and animation
the manga has really good pacing or because it is short and has a lot of white space so you can get through all the pain (the almost unbearable first part) in one sitting
I get your argument about the invasion of privacy but you’re definitely a western kid who does not know one thing about Asia whatsoever, especially Japan. Privacy in class is nil. What you bring to class is definitely a giant risk. Just FYI. I don’t like it but that’s how their culture works. (& no, I’m not justifying the theft or creepy behavior, just focusing on the privacy part: it doesn’t exist, not in class).

You misunderstand. It's not "I can fix her." Fuck that. It's "she can ruin me."

@@TheKeysmash no same i agree its so beautiful in my eyes at what it does and portrays. And some shots nice as heck.
MIDORI REP !!
Another manga to burn into my memory, probably for the worst over best but it sounds interesting
👍👍‼️
I HATE that most people's response to 'haters' of the anime, is that the only reason people don't like the anime is because of the rotoscoping. they never mention that the pacing sucks in the anime. and Kasuga is always sweating and insufferable. way way worse than the manga..... I'm just blabbering, but tl;dr the anime had awesome tone, and style, but the story did not unfold properly. I dont care.. read the manga. way better. I love it. bye.
i read the manga and watched the anime and preferred just about everything in teh anime better. no wrong answer i think, just a matter of taste
Well, that's because it's all what they complain about. Seriously, go take a look at the myanimelist thread at the time, the only thing they care about it's the aesthetic and animation
i really liked the 7min walking scene though! the really awkward pacing somehow enhanced it for me
the manga has really good pacing or because it is short and has a lot of white space so you can get through all the pain (the almost unbearable first part) in one sitting
I still don't get Nakamura's motivation
I get your argument about the invasion of privacy but you’re definitely a western kid who does not know one thing about Asia whatsoever, especially Japan. Privacy in class is nil. What you bring to class is definitely a giant risk. Just FYI. I don’t like it but that’s how their culture works. (& no, I’m not justifying the theft or creepy behavior, just focusing on the privacy part: it doesn’t exist, not in class).
I wonder if the growing evil flower of darkness and evil with the huge eye of evil represents capitalism and my growing need for more money 🤔
Cultures that view sex as sinful then you see a Pride Parade and you understand why.
What happened to keeping it to your bedroom?
17:11 i didn't relate it at all while reading the manga
thanks for the video
