PMiSS is so great because it's the first time we really have the worm's-eye view from the perspective of normal humans in Gensoukyo. This is what these characters and places look like when you aren't really powerful enough to fight. I think it was also pretty important in setting a canon for Touhou: in the early Windows Era everything was pretty nebulous, and PMiSS was a (relatively) reliable source for information on people and places and really the dynamics of Gensoukyo. I haven't yet gotten around to all the print works, so maybe there's something in Sangetsusei or the parts of Bohemian Archive I've not yet read, but I'm pretty sure the monologue near the end is the first time we hear about how the balance between youkai and humans works, maybe even that there *is* that sort of balance. I think it's the first time the youkai sages and how Gensoukyo came to be come up too, and that alone must've been massive for fanworks at the time. Speaking of that monologue, it's probably my single favourite piece of writing in all of Touhou Project. It tells us so much about both Gensoukyo and Akyuu in just a couple pages, and it's a thing to behold. I'll spare you the deep analysis because I could spend hours and hours (and have done so) dissecting everything it tells us about how Akyuu sees herself and her lot in life and the world around her and yes this monologue is why she's my favourite. "Once this edition of the Gensokyo Chronicles has finished, I should have as many people read it as possible and ask them if my continued reincarnation is necessary." "I will likely not have much of a chance to experience life as a normal human being." The whole thing about how, now that Gensoukyo's set up in such a way that youkai and humans might be able to get along, she has a chance of having friends who'll still be alive next time she reincarnates. Akyuu very obviously telling herself sweet nothings about how youkai are super chill now! And it's definitely not just because they have to be to survive! Even if the outside world completely collapsed and the youkai took over they'd surely recognize that this is a better state of affairs! She tells herself these things, of course because she needs to believe them to let herself be friends with youkai and thus not constantly horribly lonely after every reincarnation. I'll stop now, but I think that monologue, combined with a lot of little things in Forbidden Scrollery, pretty heavily imply that Akyuu kinda hates being the Child of Miare. I'd also like to mention the "and many other youkai" bit in the colophon implying that Akyuu's feels alienated from humanity, which, combined with **gestures frantically at everything that happens in Forbidden Scrollery** (go read it right now right fucking now), is *_very interesting indeed._* Or maybe I'm just reading into it too much. I'm definitely reading into it too much. -anyway this was my ted talk on why akyuu/kosuzu is the best touhou ship fucking fight me-

This game is absolutely perfect. I love how it draws inspiration from old JRPGs and anime like The Witch's House, Ib, Madoka Magica, and Touhou. It's amazing how the things I grew up enjoying have influenced someone to create such a unique game. It feels so personal 😭 Plus, having my favorite artists and illustrators involved is incredible! The pixel artist Ichigo caught my eye immediately when the game released.

nine fucking touhou albums‼️‼️ as someone who just collects cds for fun (and someone who plays vib ribbon for fun lol), i totally agree with what youve said here, even if my collection is tiny. also as someone who loooves shoegaze and noise music (and just loud music in general despite my hate for loud noises), its kinda sad that vib ribbon struggles to make charts based off of them, but hey atleast i get to listen to some of the more unique stuff in my playlist!

I get your argument about the invasion of privacy but you’re definitely a western kid who does not know one thing about Asia whatsoever, especially Japan. Privacy in class is nil. What you bring to class is definitely a giant risk. Just FYI. I don’t like it but that’s how their culture works. (& no, I’m not justifying the theft or creepy behavior, just focusing on the privacy part: it doesn’t exist, not in class).

this was an amazin video to find,, tysm for coverin it!!! i just saw you covered evergrace too and instantly had my eyes lit up,,, nto to mention the midori songss waaah,,, i do wanna mention if you ever heard of the machine girl by noboru iguchi,, whichs one o my fave movies ever,, he actually was behind aku's film adaptation!!! i just finished it and i also didnt like it very much,, but just wanted to drop that as a fun fact!!! i do remember iguchi leaving moar atmospheric shots or scenes in machine girl so it was a tad dissapointing,, but still happy hes makin movies!!!

There were so many cool anime mech games in that era. It's great to find one of them translated. While seeking this one out, I also discovered Black Magic, which is based on a manga by Shirow Masamune, of GitS fame.

A part of me would really love a remake of this game, the problem is that with the plague known as the "modern audience", the game will be watered down as much as posible for the sake of pleasing the woke tourists.

I'm not gonna lie and act like i don't cry at manga, but this one... this one was something special that hit at the exact right time. Say what you will about Fujimoto, but he just GETS something about life, art and the human condition that really resonates through his work. (Wether he or anyone else is aware of what specifically is beside the point).

I did not know that there was a movie and a manga based on Fatal Frame. Thank you for bringing that up and hope that more games in the series get ported to PC and that one day Folklore gets ported too.

i was gonna leave a mildly annoyed comment on your SSIB video about you not mentioning how CiLR as a companion piece, but realized the vid was a year old and i should check if youve also made a vid on it, lol. Both videos are good, i like your editing style and you're right about mokou's chapter, but it's a bit funny that you brushed off yukari's chapter as dry and uninteresting after making fun of her in the ssib vid for losing the first genso-lunar war, because some of the stuff she says in there really strongly implies that she's losing intentionally

This game leads me to think the PC-98 would be a good candidate for Windows / Linux recompilation, similar to N64 recompilation, simply because it could do with some basic fixes that would be possible with modding but not emulation.

It looks like a very cool Front Mission alternative (it even came out a few month before Front Mission apparently). Did you play on a emulator or real hardware? I wonder if the bug you encountered was from the patch or the emulator. I saw that there is a Playstation port and also a sequel.
