Honestly, this is my favorite thing about Naruto. They always convey such an excellent sense of family and legacy that having children feels legit in the world and not just "something to do" to show a time skip.
"Having children feels legit in the world" < this. I grew up watching Naruto. It took me through literally my entire puberty, school, and first jobs. I am strongly convinced much of that family and legacy attitude I have now as an adult has been formed on the premises of something that seeped into my mind from this work.
It used to be one of my favorite aspects early on as well but towards the end it really bugged me. The kids became exactly like their parents, even having the same powers and techniques, and the whole reincarnation thing almost killed it for me
Dante Crottogini that’s literally what the previous generation were. Exact copies of there parents. The differences were there personalities which were in my opinion written insanely well. The reincarnation thing is whole different can of worms that I don’t want to open.
Madara is the living incarnation of a grumpy old man stubbornly carrying his values without relying on the possible prosperity of the next generation.

A moment from the series that really stays etched in my mind is when Naruto returns to Konoha after Pain has already caused so much damage. He seems somewhat positive until he realizes Kakashi has been killed. At that point, he just says, "okay," and the manga doesn't even show his face in that second. In that scene, Naruto's not sure if he's ready to take on the torch, but he has no choice; the torch has been thrust upon him, and the future's now in his hands.

but it's a bit a shame that you let out one of the main aspect of this Heritage theme : passing the torch to the next generation because the previous one couldn't change that world full of war and suffering, and so let it in this state for the new generation. You talked about this with Lady Chiyo in your talk no Jutsu video, but more than about the young ones becoming as strong as the old, the thing is the new generation has to make BETTER for the world, and that's especially the case for Naruto.
The Akatsuki Suppression arc is more important then you think in this aspect, because Naruto beat Kakuzu with the first Jutsu that is ABOVE the rasengan, which was the Jutsu herited from his father, and if we look at Kakuzu, he is a man who refuses to die by taking the heart of Ninjas, and towards the end of the fight he was absolutely ugly like a zombie with all his"hair" going through his body, i think he symbolizes the Shinobi world : an ugly place that refuses to die, to let the new generation construct something better.
Naruto beating him with the Rasenshuriken means that he has proven that he can surpass the previous generation and end this world.
I wanted to insist on that moment because i'm still salty by how you and Craftsdwarfs talked bad about it in your Nen Show podcast, i think it's one of the best and most important moment in Naruto.
That's so true! I'm impressed that someone else noticed all of this. People keep saying that Naruto is not that deep, but the fact is that you have to pay attention to see all this small details.

For example in the manga the reincarnation of Asura and Indra was foreshadowed in the five Kaye summit arc which was an entire 4 years before the “out of nowhere power-up”. Itachi was always a more sympathetic villain as well in the manga. He was more subdued when compared to the anime.

Funny how Dragon Ball want Gohan as main character and they're stuck with Goku, while some of Naruto fans want Naruto as main character and they're stuck with Boruto.
Gohan got to fight besides his father against Raditz, Vegeta, and Frieza before he surpassed his father in the fight against Cell and we kept seeing his hidden potential materialise time and time again, so Gohan never felt like a snot-nosed upstart.
Boruto does seem like one because he was one.
I've never seen a main character so perfectly embody their series as Boruto does. Just like Boruto the character has no idea what he wants to become, other than being different from his father, despite worshipping him, Boruto the series has no idea what it wants to be, other than different from it's predecessor, despite being at it's best, when giving it nods. And that would actually be an interesting theme to work with, but the writers don't seem to realise it.
It's a myth that Toriyama wanted Gohan to become the main character. That was not the case.

agree, he is the best Naruto youtuber for the moment. But he still has done quite some video on it and i would want to see some One Piece content from him.
@@SuperBallani What's really frustrating is that there's a literal ton of Narutotubers and Anitubers that talk about Naruto, yet nobody talks about simple character development of a single character.
These people grew up with the series, but nobody managed or even bothered to understand a single theme,so much to the point that a Naruto-Novice like Mathwiz managed to identify most of them in less that a year of rereading the series.
Just look at how much influence a single youtuber like Aleczandxr have on a fandom,Both Naruto and Bleach are of the big 3 and neither get the recognition they deserve.
No one loves Naruto. Cash-grabbing off of this series is the best they could do.

Well it's not that they don't like Naruto, it's that they love the more easy to see appealing things like the fights, and i don't blame them for that because for a long time that was really the thing that made me love this serie. What is irritating is how much this serie is criticized for terrible reasons that 90 % of the time feels like real nitpick or bad reading comprehension while something like HunterxHunter gets a ton of praise because for some reasons nobody seems to see its flaws.
yep Naruto and Bleach most definitely deserves better than that, but hey at least with Mathwiz and Craftsdwarf we have began .
@@SuperBallani It's too late imo,the series is half dead and is dying,there are people like Nuxtaku that have Horrible takes on Naruto that pretend to "analyse" so that he looks cool infront of his 14 year old fanbase.
The only good video that he managed to put out that changed my mind a bit on SDS was his recent Meliodas video,It still was Mediocre.
He could improve a lot,he seems to know Crafts but never learns from him. Imagine what you could do for the platform with that big of a fanbase. Imagine if Crafts or Mathwiz had that big of a fanbase.
Naruto has a much larger fanbase than HxH ever had and ever will have,especially in the west. It's really hard to even think that nobody actually tried to deep dive into the series for 6 years since it ended.
@@lunarhinata8889 let's not be that negative, it's never too late. Letting some time pass after a serie end is a good thing to go back to it with a fresh mind and having anoter view on it.
Plus Kishimoto comes back with his new manga next week in shonen jump, and that's a guarantee to make people talk back about Naruto.
I hope the author of naruto has as much growth love and experience while writing his new manga samurai 8.

Yo, I think you have a clear and thoughtful understanding of the philosophies that underpin that Naruto. Continue working on that man. That's where you find yourself thinking more creatively, and I'm sure in the distillation of these characters you've had many of your own deeply meaningful insights about life. That being said, don't feel the need to start producing catchall content for the weebs. The weebs don't know anything about storytelling. This is why so many authors find the unoriginallity and myopic minds of many or their fans to be immensely annoying. Weebs have nothing serious to say about anime or storytelling. They're too busy debating power levels and who the truest weeb is. I 100% support you staying true to story telling and philosophical analysis type content over ever making sure the weebs accept you. If you were secretly kishimoto the weebs would tell you that you don't know what you're talking about or that your show is too mainstream. Keep up the good work, man. There's so few content creators talking about Naruto that I find myself actually being able to respect.

One thing that helps this is that if an alive person can do something in naruto theres always a dead person better at it than them who gets brought back in the 4th war. Its good for actually showing the passing of the torch when those not dead people find ways to overcome the dead people (this may sound like a joke because of my phrasing, but its not. Im dead serious)

I feel you missed a big opportunity by not talking about the Rasengan and how it is a a literal passing of the torch from the 4th to Naruto to Boruto. And I think the talk that Shikamaru gave Naruto before he left to train in sage mode would have fit nicely into this topic. (Okay I didn’t read the subs because I had the video on while I was doing housework you did include the conversation Shikamaru had with Naruto before he went to train sage mode)

Mathwiz oh whoops sorry I had the video on while I was doing housework and I didn’t read the subs (my bad) but my point about the rasengan fitting in here still stands it went from the 4th to Jiraiya who taught it to the son of his successor to Konohamaru who then taught it to Boruto. I guess the only outlier in the rasengan scenario is Kakashi learning it. Still a great video though.

Thats one of the reason's why Naruto is my favorit anime and Manga of all time and battel shounen my favorit genre of all time, because by passing on the torch the next generation will learn from the mistakes of the previous generation and improve from that and carrying their will,for example my Hero Academia and black clover are both series,that have many elements that are similär to Naruto,for example the main characters,but they also learned from the mistakes of their predecessor,for example the main female characters in both series(Noelle in black clover and ochako in my hero) are both better written at the beginnnig,as Sakura around that time,that why i love the theme of passing on the torch, because it something you also have in real live and often create something amazing like my Hero, black clover or Boruto (yes Boruto great as well).
i don't know about ochacko, i mean after the hero liscence arc she's barely gotten any screen time

This is one of my favourite aspects of Naruto when comparing to other shonens. Progressing protagonists aren't allowed to take the main dishes in battles for majority of the series.
Zabuza was defeated by Kakashi
Orochimaru was defeated by Hiruzen
Orochimaru was defeated by Jiraya and Tsunade
Orochimaru's henchmen (I know they are barely older than them but they were surely above genin level) were defeated by 2v1 or hard counter (Neji vs Kidomaru)
Against Akatsuki Gai, Kakashi and Chyio were main players.
Against Orochimaru Naruto needed to be watched over by Yamato to not get consumed by the fox. And there was no other way to confront him.
Against Hidan Shikamaru had prep time and Kakuzu was weakened against Naruto
Itachi died against Sasuke because he wanted to
Pain was far from full power against Naruto and tapping into power of Kurama was nearly absolute disaster for out protagonist.
The real moments when young generation is finally clearly in the same league as adults is Sasuke's attack on Five Kage Summit and then War Arc. They aren't carried by some insane potential or being prodigies or low stakes that can't create high tension.

I was actually surprised neither you nor Craftsdwarf cared for Akatsuki Suppression much for the Nen Show. Hidan, the sadomasochist who murders to preserve his God-given immortality, and Kakuzu, the money-grubbing, heart-stealing ancient mercenary, were such perfect fits for that arc.

And yet Boruto doesn't seem to want to continue this philosophy.
I mean Boruto could, but it's quite a stretch...and probably requires way more arcs to happen before we start seeing that picture.
Just like how team7 already established Kakashi as a great ninja without knowing his struggle, the kids in Boruto are expected to believe that the previous gen is great without knowing their struggle. The idea then becomes "how do we foster the younger gen so that they'll be ready for our torch? What does doing that look like?" and the very real struggles behind raising a generation that will face a different variety-of-conflict than what Naruto's-gen grew up facing

American Comics could learn a thing or two from anime/manga. Marvel tried this a couple years back with Marvel Legacy and it utterly failed.
I mean, American Comics is really handled differently. I don't read any but I do know Steve Rogers has been Captain America since he was first created. There might've been some changes but on most comics even today, Steve Rogers is still Captain America. Thor is still, well, Thor. Iron Man is still Tony Stark. I mean, you get the point. The American comics, I think, have different messages to convey or they have a different way of saying them.
Kinda hard to compare them since both DC and Marvel comics (dunno bout other comics) have characters that are written by multiple writers. All throughout Naruto and Naruto Shippuden, it's only been written by Masashi Kishimoto. Can't say the same for American comics. Anyway, I'm not nitpicking you or disproving what you're saying but I just also wanted to comment something.
I think Manga and Comics just do their own thing and both could learn from each other. I mean, I'm not sure, as I've said, I don't really read comics.
Well comics are written by dozens of people who have to take the stories of hundreds of other people into consideration and who write stories and characters that are supposed to go on forever

Something important that I dont see brought up is that when characters get thier "revenge" they dont ever feel good about it. At best they feel at peace, look at Shikas face when he decided to kill Hidan and when he was burying him, the realization of his goals and completing them instead of lashing out as he did. This can be seen in Naruto and Sasuke when they get thier "vengeance", they grow up and try to find thier own peace instead of lashing out as they once had.
I wonder if analysis videos like this ever existed during the early TH-cam days from 06 to 2012. Maybe did, but weren't very common yet.

I loved this, but where are the One Piece and Beach videos? Couldn't you have done a video on passing the torch in shounen in general not just Naruto? Would have loved to see the difference in how most series handle this trope.
This isn't really a subject I'm all that interested in doing a comparison piece about. I might do some big three comparisons in the future, but I'm not sure what they'd be about yet.
