The Concierto de Aranjuez is a composition for classical guitar and orchestra by the Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo. Written in 1939, it is far and away Rodrigo's best-known work, and its success established his reputation as one of the most significant Spanish composers of the twentieth century.
There are of course many recordings of this piece but without a doubt Narciso Yepes is far and away the finest artist of this piece of music….and this particular live performance might just be the best I’ve ever heard. I was in Spain some years ago in 2017 and a street performer was playing this outside a cafe and someone in the cafe asked out loud what it was. I told him the title was concierto de aranjuez and I told him to only look for a Narciso Yepes recording of it as no one else performed it better. They looked at me funny as they must have wondered what a diminutive brown skinned Asian could know about Spanish classical guitar music (I’m originally from Bangladesh) but live in NY. I don’t know why but this piece has always made me emotional ever since I heard it on WQXR many years ago in radio. I choke up and get a lump in my throat at the finale every time I hear this piece. Rodrigo might have only written this one memorable piece of music but what a masterpiece it is. Epic actually and so so beautiful.

I first heard this when I was about 13. I was learning piano and listening to concerts and fell upon this. I agree, when I hear this I feel so emotional about this. It is for me the most beautiful, romantic and at the same time sad piece of music. I never tire of listening to this ❤
That's great. Yeah, very emotional since Rodrigo wrote this masterpiece dedicated to his born dead son.
I was 17, now soon to turn 70, when I attended the Yepes concert at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg during one of the worst years of Apartheid ….. to a “mixed” audience …… the terrible week that followed is well documented. So lovely to see Maestro Frübeck in action again. When I was in the Philharmonia Chorus, we sang with him many times in London, Madrid and Barcelona. A great man to work with. He always respected and cared for his performers.
This piece always creates strong feelings and emotions whenever I listen to it. It deserves to be around for at least as long as Mozart, Bach, et al. Thanks for posting. Love it.

Sublime!!!!! Desde Argentina, país americano, les comento que desde muy pequeño solía escuchar ésta maravilla junto a mi padre. Ahora con 58 años no solamente me emociono frente a esta maravilla musical sino también me conecto espiritualmente con con mi papá ( que me dejó hace pocos años) y con su terruño (España). Te fuiste, pero aquí dejaste éste retoño....!

Esta fue la primera interpretación del concierto que escuché cuando era joven y para mí es la mejor interpretación que he visto hasta el momento. Aunque también son muy dignas de considerar la de Pepe Romero y John William, para mí Narciso Yepes explota los colores y las posibilidades técnicas de la guitarra en una mayor gama que los otros dos. Mi profundo respeto y admiración al Maestro Narciso y a Joaquín Rodrigo por escribir este concierto tan bello para un instrumento tan nuestro.
Concuerdo con usted. Esta interpretación tiene fuerza, altos mas altos y bajos mas bajos. Tiene color. Narciso es todo un MAESTRO.
He escuchado interpretaciones que, a mi gusto, demuestran más sensibilidad y emoción por parte del ejecutante como las de Turibio Dos Santos, Andrés Segovia, Paco de Lucía. Sin embargo la sonoridad de la maravillosa y famosa guitarra de diez cuerdas de Yépez, así como su maestría técnica la hacen una interpretación muy buena. Repito, creo que sólo le falta más emoción.

La de Paco de Lucía es sencillamente divina. Sin ánimo de polemizar, pero está muy por encima de la del gran Narciso Yepes.

I am always driven to tears by those melodies. There are so many versions of this concert but Narcisco Yepes gave it something special.

Ésta es una obra maestra inmortal, y más aún en la guitarra de Narciso Yepes. Hace volar tu mente y tu ama a un espacio de profundas emociones que se hacen sentir en lo profundo de tu carne y de tu mente. Simplemente maravilloso..!!

This is Joaquin Rodrigo's best work, I think his only great work. I first heard this in Madrid in 1961 played on a six string guitar by Narciso Yepes and the Nacional Orchestra de Espana. I have two recordings by him and I just heard Pepe Romeros and the Danish National Orchestra. It is glorious.

Esta es una de las grandes interpretaciones de este famoso Concierto. Favor notar que la gitarra de Narciso Yepez tiene por lo menos 10 cuerdas mientras que las comtemporanear son de 6 cuerdas y cada una de ellas corresponde a una nota musical (Mi, La, Re, Sol, Si, Mi). Desde la más aguda hasta la más grave,
En una memorable "función" disfrutamos junto a mi familia en el anfiteatro de la Universidad Central de Caracas , en 1979, este concierto actuando de solistas Yepes, a continuación vino la quinta de Beethoven. Maravillas. Naturalmente, gratis para mis tres niños, igual que en Chile, ja, ja.
Rodrigo would be proud .
