There is no doubt that SGR in Kenya has improved transportation and interconnectivity, especially between Mombasa and Nairobi. I wish that SGR could extend into Uganda and Rwanda because the two rely heavily on Mombasa port for imports and exports. This way, Kenya could decongest the link roads that are already clogged by heavy load vehicles.
@@briant5685 I believe China is keen to see other countries get involved as this shows African countries aren't just open to China for development. The African countries have to learn to live within their means too.
@@briant5685 It is not that China refuses to fund the remaining part. You have to ask Uganda why they turned down the project at the 11th hour. At the beginning, the plan was to have the railroad to go all the way to the border between Kenya and Uganda, and then, moving forward from Uganda to Rwanda. That was the original plan. But when the railroad was nearly completed between Nairobi and Mombasa, the Ugandan government suddenly said a big **NO** to the idea of having that railroad in Uganda. Without the Uganda part of the rail, the freight volume in between the Uganda/Kenya border and Nairobi dropped drastically, meaning that it made no more commercial sense to construct a railroad to a place where you won't get any goods nor passenger. That is why China tells Kenya, wait till Uganda decides to open up their country to continue the railroad, and only then the part linking the Uganda and Nairobi can be commercially viable. China doesn't want Kenya to carry too much debts. If Kenya went ahead and built that rail line all the way to the Kenya/Uganda border it would cost Kenya a lot of money which Kenya cannot hope to earn even one single cent from. That is why China decides to stop the construction, for now. It is not a permanent stoppage. Everything hinges on Uganda. Only when Uganda opens up its borders, and only when the whole railroad can be linked all the way to Rwanda, then the railroad can become commercially viable (and not losing money).
