This was so helpful! I'm going to my first opera tonight and I've been getting very mixed messages on what to wear, it's actually made me feel very anxious
If anything, wear something long [with heels if you are able] and you will be fine! It doesn’t have to be a gown, just make sure it’s on the formal side.😊Let me know if you have more questions.
As an opera singer ... I would say dont wear a long gown. The most important thing is not to reveal too much skin. In fact some places will NOT let you in partic in Europe. Its not the club.

Trust your instincts on positively standing out and wearing a chiffon garment. This sounds lovely and I would dress up for such an occasion as seeing a legend perform live as long as you feel comfortable. There are so few events where we can dress up, so I would take this concert as a sign to be in the nines especially since it is after 6pm. As Oscar Wilde said, 'You can never be overdressed or overeducated.' I hope this helps.💖

Is there anything different for attending opera in La Scala, Milan?
Yes, great question! 😊In La Scala, it's important to have sprezzatura, where your attitude is nonchalant, but your clothes do all the talking. Dress to the nines. This is the time to go all out. For ladies: wear your diamonds or costume jewelry and a proper gown. For gentleman, have proper dress shoes and a dark suit. If it's cold, have a smart tailored coat. Italians have pride in dressing up for the opera with a more black tie feel or up, depending on the show and organisation hosting. All the rules in this video apply alongside this. I hope this helps!

Unfortunately no one dresses up anymore to go the opera, so if you go with long gloves and a tiara you’ll really stand out as a newbie, cause opera aficionados don’t dress up as much or ultra formally
This is very far from my experiences in operas across the world from the Puccini Festival to Glyndebourne to Aix-en-Provence. "You can never be overdressed or overeducated" - Oscar Wilde. Just inappropriately underdressed.
If I saw someone dressed up properly like that, they would stand out in a good way that makes the occasion rather than ruin it.
If you watch the video she specifically said in white tie opera events.

Unless it is specific events, you shouldnt overdress to go to the opera. Which doesn’t mean you should’t dress well, but we aren’t in the XIXth century anymore
