I have this ridiculous theory about why Alice was so attracted to the White Rabbit. In both the novels and this film, he is seemingly the only sane resident in Wonderland so naturally Alice wants to find him; everyone else is mad. The White Rabbit fearfully serves part time as the Queen of Hearts'; it's so that she doesn't execute him. The reason that he calls Alice "Mary Ann," is to protect her; to make it look like she is his non-suspicious servant and make her go inside the house so that she is hiding from the many other animals who would easily and willingly snitch on this intruder of Wonderland to gain the favour of the Queen. In Tim Burton's sequel/reboot, this is further demonstrated by how the White Rabbit secretly helps Alice while still serving the Queen publicly. This idea is further expanded in the Wonderland comic, where the White Rabbit is accused of conspiring against the Queen by aiding the "Alice Monster." The White Rabbit was the only sane and decent citizen of Wonderland just trying to survive in a mad tyranny, and help the innocent Alice survive as well.
Greetings from 2024! I rediscovered this Disney classic a couple years back. And it’s one of those movies that hasn’t aged too badly! As a kid, I always enjoyed the colors and the lighthearted tone.
Matthew Cates actually if it's ahead of it's time for then, it was way ahead of it's time when it was written. It was written by charles lutwidge dodgson under the psuedonym lewis carrol in 1865. It was based on a dream his close friend Alice liddel had. Fun fact: In the book the mad hatter asks her what day it is. She responds "the 4th" and he says his watch is "three days wrong"... the actual alice was born on may the 4th... this took place on the characters birthday, and the sequel "Through the looking glass and what Alice found there" took place exactly six months later. According to the books she was 7 in this story because in the second one she says she is "seven and a half exactly."
In the 1960s the animation actually degenerated. In the Golden Era of Hollywood, people went to movies to spend half-day in there. The cartoons were supposed to look good at the big screen. When the TV was invented, people stopped attending the theaters as often as they did. It became unprofitable to make good cartoons. that's why 1960s cartoons are mainly in "limited animation" - they were saving costs and making them for the TV screen. The 60-70s were actually a Dark Age of Animation.
Alice in Wonderland is about a young child becoming a young woman... And it was written by a 6 year old girl with the help of an adult who got the credits for it.
Disney's "Alice in Wonderland" had the most musical numbers out of all of his films. I'm not sure how many, though, but I do know that over 30 songs were written for it. They obviously couldn't have listed 30-some songs. C:
my father wanted to give me this movie, to distract me, from getting bad dreams, i had a wildrabbit, a white one, so he bought me a rabit or rabit, because i liked these movies, when i was a kid.
I did watch first the movie 2010. I found it okay, but then I saw this disney movie in tv....WOOOOOW. They shows the surreal dreamland and the feelings much better than the new movie. Even the atmosphere has so many mysticism (for example the situation in the woods or in the ending, where the background is black while running away from the Queen). I was amazed about this movie, but I realized too how stupid the movie of Tim Burton was. -_- This Disney movie is still the best!!!!
Bill Thompson (the White Rabbit) voiced many, many characters, most of which had the distinctive "chubby cheeks" sound. His most famous non-Disney role is probably Droopy, but he also voiced Mr. Smee, many characters in Lady and the Tramp, Ranger Woodlore, et al.
this is such a authentic great movie! i wish sometimes movies could be this genuine again :( oh, well, i just realized this is also so old, lol my mom wasn't even borned yet, it's almost for her childhood :P
For a movie more than half a century old it holds up pretty well. It's a pity you most likely won't meet people with manners and heart such of that young lady.
I had never seen this original version of Alice in Wonderland, and watched it for the first time on a couple tabs of LSD a few years back. That was genuinely one of the best hours in my life. Such a funky movie, I didn't know what it was about so everything that happened was just like "woaaaaah holy shit what just happened" lmaoo. I appreciated the hell out of this movie watching it for the first time.
lewis carolls real name was rev charles dodgson, he did take pictures of naked children but at the time that was common practice. theres no real evidence for or against that he was a drug user or pedofile. It was thought that he wrote the book at the request of a little girl named alice liddell, as he was friends with her family. i dont really know whats true or not so many urban legends and myths surround him now, but I guess its too late to find out as he died so many years ago.
I don't understand how this movie received so much harsh criticism. It wasn't fair. I think it was beautifully created and is charming in every way. Alice, white rabbit, chesire cat, Mad Hatter, March Hare, Dormouse, and the queen of Hearts were well developed characters. My other favorite charming Disney cartoons are Peter Pan, Jungle Book, Mary Poppins, and Home on the Range.
Yes, this was originally released by RKO-Radio; after 1954, however, Walt set up his own "in-house" distribution firm {Buena Vista} for theatrical releases, and "Alice" was first reissued without RKO's original distribution credit in 1956....
@hanbobs Sorry to burst your bubble but contrary to common belief that's actually not true. Lewis Carroll was a mathematician, and the foundation of the story is logic or vise versa, the lack of it. Infact, LCD wasn't even invented back then!
I watched this movie a few years ago while sick... possibly a little out of it from the fever, and it was the scariest most traumatizing thing. I haven't been able to watch it since.
No, there were no drugs evolved in the making of this movie. Because you are an adult, you may think there is a hidden message, but really, there isn't. It was a movie made for children. The strange atmosphere of the movie came directly by the book, which was a story made up to entertain three little girls as the author sailed down the river with them. Then one of the girls, (who was coincidentely named Alice) asked for him to write it down. I've done quite a bit of research on this.
This one was always such an oddball. It has a somewhat cold tone that is pretty unusual for Disney. And the critics were right that it trivializes Carrol and that it has no real emotional center. What I love about it though, is how it just engages in absurdity for its own sake, seemingly without regard for the audience keeping up. And even in watered-down, sanitized form, the satirical depiction of the British upper classes is hilarious. In that area, the coldness actually helps the movie.
uughhh i hate when people say "all it's about is acid trips" the guy who wrote the story was dead before lsd even even existed! and even if he had been on drugs, the story has positive, legitimate morals behind it.
It's the general idea of how after growing up, everyone is so caught-up in reality that they are no longer able to enter their so-called "Wonderland" of their own imagination and youth. The book is also filled with meaning and satire, but the way it is out together makes it seem nonsensical. I miss wonderland, to be honest...I love this movie :,)
I'm pretty sure it's coincidence, considering this was written in 1865, and the use of such a drug did not become common practice until about a hundred years later. There were other drugs he could've been using though. Opium was the popular one back then, but I'm sure there were other hallucinogenic drugs he could've been taking.
I wish people would stop relating drugs to this story! It was never proven he took drugs while writing this. He actually was very smart, and combined subjects like 'maths' into his work. He was a creative writer, thats how he made his story. Try writing a story like this on LSD and i might believe it's all a trip.
Mad Hatter: Would you like a little more tea? Alice: Well, I haven't had any yet, so I can't very well take more. March Hare: Ah, you mean you can't very well take less. Mad Hatter: Yes. You can always take more than nothing.
I love Walt Disney movies like these. The new ones aren't as good in my opinion. /: and I can't stand it when people say alice is on acid or is phsycadelic ( however you spell it) I love this movie. She's so sweet and innocent I just love her. Thank you Walt Disney.
The old trailers make impression that people were smarter back then. Nowadays a trailer thrills the viewer with images from the movie, hitting the senses. Back then they were appealed to reason to a bigger extent.
Crazy how different Disney was compared to now.
makes me sad :(
I know Walter Disney would never run his company like the loons that are running it today and destroying Walters original work
They’ve been too hit and miss in recent years
Rip Walt he made Disney and was the only hope
THIS is Alice in Wonderland!
I love this movie too! I have it.
This movie scares the crap out of me yet I still love it
how?
Why?
Same :/

This film is a beautiful work of art.
Better than the 2010 version.
Right
You said it.
@@93mr.k "Alice?!, Who The F**k Is Alice!!!!??????"

I love old movie trailers. They're so different from now:)
Oh my gosh! Is this trailer being narrated by Walt Disney…himself!? Amazed doesn't even describe to how I'm feeling right now!🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩😲😲😲😲😲😲
Hmm I don’t think so
Wow, this was made in 1951?! It was way ahead of its time in terms of its messages of individuality and madness. It seems more akin to the 1960s.
Matthew Cates actually if it's ahead of it's time for then, it was way ahead of it's time when it was written. It was written by charles lutwidge dodgson under the psuedonym lewis carrol in 1865. Back when disney was amazing and not too animated and overdone.
My mom visited the authors house. Or at least were it since was.
the best movie of Alice... my favorite version
Best movie ever!
Alice In Wonderland thank yoy...
Alice in Wonderland is about a young child becoming a young woman... And it was written by a 6 year old girl with the help of an adult who got the credits for it.
Katherine Beaumont who voiced Alice also did Wendy from Peter Pan:)
Also, it's Kathryn, not Kathrine.
Disney's "Alice in Wonderland" had the most musical numbers out of all of his films.

Truly!
It was probably much easier for The Walt Disney Studios to create movie trailers in the 1950s than today.
Definitely one of my favourite movies EVER!!!

I wonder if Disney will do a live movie of this.
