    More and more I'm finding my embrace of the single monitor life and using virtual desktops to be worth it. I'd still be inclined to a Pro model Mac for the higher refresh rate of the built-in monitor, but with a desk that's only 60" wide at home that also holds my personal desktop monitor and accessories, I don't have the space to dual display things and I've never cared for KVMs. Virtual desktops on macOS are really nice once you get used to them and really help you organize things with a single display.

      @@mucahitkral8951 I was in a similar situation with you and doing the same course. instead of buying the 16gb macbook air, get the 8gb Macbook air and another monitor for 140 bucks and you can use your monitor connect to your laptop and have 2 screens when you're at home and laptop when you're are uni. the 8gb and a monitor will be the same price as the 16gb. trust me you wont me needing 16gb. also the software you'll be using will run on 8 perfectly. Besides most of the times you'll be using the schools computers. Having your codes on your monitor and the live previews of you code on the monitor is a game changer.

    You are, without a doubt, one of the best. I find that I’ve been saying that a little for the last three weeks - don’t be offended by that, it’s just that I’ve been a little put off (and I’m NOT trying to be … ummm … negative or mean spirited & would NEVER call anyone out) by lots of weird voices, gimmicks, repetitiveness, etc. It’s not that much of the content isn’t worthwhile, it’s the fact that I have had to mute them & watch while reading the transcripts. “Nails on chalkboards” bad.
    I appreciate your tempo, your comic side because we aren’t all in our PhD classes, we are in life and need a laugh!
    Your production value was great.
    The only time I care about “splash” is if you ask me to show you how to shoot a basketball🏀😉
    Thank you for a wonderful, timely, easy to follow & information that was PRECISELY what I sought!

    It is better to use some display link dock, which can handle one native DP Alt Mode display, so only one display will be handled with display link. Biggest drawback of display link is that it worsk as screen capture so DRM protected videos like AppleTV+, Netflix and so will not play when Display link driver is active no matter which screen is used.
    Btw some Philips monotirs have DL chip build in.

    •  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    We should keep in mind that Apple can kill or change the APIs DisplayLink depends on any time.
    But if that happens, at least you can still use this device as a USB & Ethernet hub.

      I have been using these for a long time, and honestly, DisplayLink has been really good about updating the drivers. Even when the M1 came out, DisplayLink adapted pretty quickly for ARM. If there is a disruption, it won't last long. DisplaLink chips are in a lot of external monitors, like the MobilPixels external laptop monitors, and many many other devices. They are the less famous, but more critical video chip maker in the industry that targets those of us that can't simply add a video card to our setup. They have been around for a long time, and have earned a decent reputation.

  • @maxvamp
    @maxvamp 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    @Alex, I have been using a DisplayLink adapter from StarLink for a few years. I needed it for previous laptops, and when I got a M1 Max, I was able to support 3 monitors. I found out the hard way that the M1 Pro ( My work laptop ) only supports 2 external monitors, so I ended up breaking out the adapter, and have been happy with it on the newer setup. The only caveat that I have run into is that with DRM enabled streaming videos through a web browser ( Paramount+, SlingTV, etc ) , they will not play any video while the displaylink software is running. The Displaylink plugs in as if it is a screen recorder plugin for MacOS . DRM in streamers detects this and blocks the video to stop piracy for those with real screen recorders, so if you want to have a show playing on one screen while using this, and maybe working on some code on another, the screen will be blank. I recommend building a playlist of videos from this guy named Alex, on TH-cam, and having those play. They work fine until TH-cam puts DRM on these streams.
    In any case, If you need a dedicated external extender, and not a full blown hub, I have been very very happy ( not paid by them ) with StarTech's stuff. The extender is abut $80, maybe less now, and they are durable. I have beat the heck out of this over 4 laptops, and it keeps going all day. It does run a little warm, I think all displayLink devices do, but with the one exception I mentioned, these are a WONDERFUL way to add another screen for non-gaming purposes. remember they are over USB3, so don't think you are going to get mega 4 HDR 120 FPS performance. However, if you are like me, and have a ton of windows open ( in my case management and development ) , These things are AWESOME.
    Thank you for the review Alex, and keep on rocking.

    I came across DisplayLink as a software/driver etc. back when my office had Dell D6000 docks. I bought one for home use because it has USB-c, an adapter to type A, power delivery on USB-c and is built on DisplayLink. This worked well with my o.g. Macbook Pro from 2015, my recycled Windows PC and - when I bought it - my M1 Max Macbook Pro... until the dock died. Now I'm on a Dell monitor with built in KVM, but that's a different story an not related to this video. On my older machine I noticed the impact of DisplayLink on performance, which is why I ran the Windows PC via direct HDMI cable and used the dock as a USB hub only. With a modern machine it's ok, with ancient HW not so much! :D

      You can connect ONE external monitor to basic M chip, up to 6k. It's not that basic M chips can't connect any display, but more of them. This is HW limitation as these processors have only two display controllers, one for built in LCD (hardwired) and other for external.
      You are also limited by 6k framebuffer so because how macOs handles scaling (2x for each axis) in hiDPI mode, you will not be able to go above 3008x1260 scaled pixels on ultrawide 5k2k screen. Or use native monitor resolution but everything will be too small then.

    Interesting I haven't heard anything about Display link in a while. It was an interesting technology 20 years ago allowing video output over USB 2.0. It worked OK on most systems. That's actually a clever use and theoretically it should work through the OWC dock since it's not actually I don't think pushing the display data through a display (HDMI, DP) profile but I could be wrong.

    Thanks! This explains a lot. So, the key thing here is, it needs a docking station that is certified with Display Link. I currently have a docking station that connects to one external monitor via HDMI and another external monitor via VGA (yes, an it's old monitor but I got not much choice now). The problem is, external monitors are mirroring each other. So, I downloaded Display Link and it did not detect as well, which led me to assume that the docking station that I currently have is not certified with Display Link. May need to go and get one.

  • @andyH_England

    I am assuming that as the M1 was based on an old A-chip that it was modified to have just one display output. Maybe that was the limit of the construct. The MB Pro 14/16 uses the Pro chip which is two stacked M1 chips so supports 2X the displays. The M2 was the M1 overclocked due to the delay in 3nm at TSMC. I am hoping that the M3 chip is a redesign rather than simply an A17 construct, which will modify and improve the early M1/M2 designs. It will be the second build in all but name so I am expecting better maturity and improved user experience.

    I'm trying to hook up two monitors to my MacBook Pro 13" M2, 2022. I have issues with both screens working together. I can hook up one monitor at a time and, they work perfectly, so I know both ports and monitors are working but I can't get them to work at the same time/together. Any suggestions?

    Alex, I got the 24gb air with the assumption I'll use display link to get the 2nd monitor but then I saw on display link forums lots of complains about bad quality when using scaling (blurry fonts etc). UHD display in native res or in 1080p is not very useful for most people so usable scaling is very important. How does it look with scaled resolutions? Does it look equally good to "native" connection?

    • @MrMatix2501
      @MrMatix2501 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have one and it doesn't. Resolution is a bit less than 1080p in my opinion (my native monitor is 1080p) and it's very noticeable especially in action buttons (I mean Close - Minimise and Enter full screen) and other small on screen components. 120Hz is a maximum refresh rate but that one is ok. Worth mentioning that you won't be able to watch Netflix, HBO Max or any other streaming media platform of that kind because the video is black when this adapter is connected to a Mac while audio is working just fine. Tried to contact with HYPER to replace my device but it's been 2 months already and they don't give a damn.
      All in all, I don't recommend that product. Would be much better to buy some ultra wide monitor instead.

      Thanks @@MrMatix2501 . I've actually went ahead and tested two docking stations based on the highest end DisplayLink chip DL-6000 (Dell D6000 and Lenovo 40AF). I'm on an M2 MacBookAir 24GB. I use it for an additional screen for my dev work so I will skip limitations related to DRM content because for that I would use my main screen anyway, which I connect directly from the macbook, not via the dock. So i use the extra screen for productivity tasks and my setup is like this: main screen 27" UHD, side screen 1440p
      - not useful for a 4k screens because HiDPI scaling is not supported and the image is blurry. As a result, it looks as if your LCD was in a non-native resolution. IMO that's unusable. Unless you have a very large screen and won't be using scaling then it might be ok. But then, it's a bit laggy, but prob still usable
      - f.lux (the tool for warming up the colors at night) does not work with it. The display link driver has a checkbox to allow f.lux to work, but it still doesn't work for me - all screens get warm at night, but the one on DisplayLink does not (there might be a solution for it that I'm not aware of). I have not tested the MacOS native Night Shift
      - unable to set custom resolutions on a display attached via DisplayLink. For most people this doesn't matter, but if you have a screen with uncommon resolution (i.e. LG 28MQ780 DualUp), you won't be able to use it because those screens require a tool (SwitchResX, BetterDisplay) to set custom resolution.
      Lack of HiDPI scaling support is the biggest drawback because it affects nearly everybody with high res displays. On the other hand, if you are ok with using a low res screen (1080p or 1440p) then the dock does the job. I was hoping to get two 32" UHD screens but with this setup that's not going to work. Hope that helps.

      Resolution with a DisplayLink solution is fine. I drive two 4k monitors with mine. The problem is the overhead of using DisplayLink, as it’s not a native solution. You don’t really notice the lag on QHD or less displays. But when you go to 4k or above, you definitely notice that the desktop animations are no longer buttery smooth.

    Daily I run Macbook Pro and Windows side-by-side. With three screens, I still find it less than ideal. I'm hoping vision pro changes that in the future and then we won't be limited to physical monitors. It would be great to have as many screens as I need for the task and be able to easily move things around.

    • @coolvinay
      @coolvinay 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It wouldnt be able to. The farther away the object on the screen in a VR, the fewer pixels it will have at its disposal to display the item(say a monitor) within the field of view and the text inside the monitor would be blurry. If you thought a 4K(per eye) res could display 3 monitors with 4K worth of resolution each, its not going to happen unless you get close to the monitor in the VR.

As I need a docking that is both compatible with my personal MacBook Air M2, and my work PC on which I have no admin rights for installing drives…! Looks like a basic requirement, but I didn’t find any solution for that so far!

    My Mac is recognizing both of the external displays, but it is acting as if the external displays are one display, so the two external displays are mirroring each other and my mac is the extended screen. I want to have the two external displays have an extended display, and not just mirror each other. When I go to arrangement under system displays, it is only showing two screens, while I would like to see three.
